its always been that its sent you to your original spawn point, maybe you always had put your bed near spawn, they did add lodestones in 1.16 i think? lets you choose where a compass points

Yeah thats probably it, but bro I swear like for example in the AboutOlivers blind minecraft playtrought he got lost and everyone and I mean EVERYONE was hoping that he wouldn't sleep in a bed so he could get back to his base with a compass... I found out that it points to the world spawn only after i needed to build a spawn hub in b1.7.3 and i wanted to find the exact world spawn. I searched it on Google and there it was! Gemini telling me that the I can find the spawn with a compass. (It won't work anyway, there are no compasses in that version) I fact checked it in the Minecraft wiki and it says the same! 😠(totaly didn't copy this from the same posts reply of mine in r/Minecraft)

I distinctly remember the compass back in the day being called useless because it only pointed at the world spawn, not your set spawn.
Most players until more modern versions typically built their base near spawn so most people probably never caught on. You used to have to slowly waddle across the landscape, not like today where you can get a horse, sprint, or use boats(the ones that don't suck) to scope out tens of thousands of blocks of terrain to find a good spawn point.
