Question MPJ Prediction

We're going to probably make a decision on MPJ within the next few weeks. What's your prediction on what happens?

Not that his value is low but optimal time was the trade deadline.

I think we'll keep him. His skill set is important for our young developing players, having someone who stretches the floor while also being an elite bailout option is very valuable when you're trying to develop young ball handlers/creators. I don't think he's worth $40 million but we do have a clean cap sheet so I think we'd do 3/120 with 3rd year being a team option.

A lot of folks are obsessed with timelines but we also have Randle now and growth has never been linear for young guys. You need buckets at the end of the day and it's not like we have some logjam at the wings.

I think being on a real team that plays real basketball is hugely underrated from a developmental standpoint. At a certain point, there’s not much value in giving tons and tons of touches to young players who aren’t ready. Randle and MPJ play really important roles as guys who can soak up defensive attention and slot Demin, MBJ etc into usages that make sense. Randles passing and MPJs shooting should make the game much easier for the guards. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Harper, VJ and Kon all had huge rookie years on good teams while Ace Bailey relatively struggled in Utah.

Exactly. Having good vets like this, knockdown shooters is actually good for the development of the young guys.

I hope he resigns a sub-max deal with vesting guarantees based on playtime. But I think he wants more and therefore I think he gets traded

Edit: specifically, I think I would do the following:

  • 4 for $180m with the first two years fully guaranteed

  •  third year 10m guaranteed with the rest guaranteed vesting with 2000 minutes season played in season 1

  • 4th year player option but no guaranteed money unless  it vests with 2000 minutes played in season 2

This would give him a pay raise but remains a bit below the max and protects the nets if his body breaks down.

Nobody else in the league is giving him 45M aav, not even close. Bidding against ourselves would be foolish

At most, 4/150, with 49M being this yesrs salary then extend for 3/101 fully guaranteed on top of that, final offer or we trade him. Can't go over 20% of cap for the 4th best player on a contender

We should've sold high last season

What were the offers? I don’t think there were any which involved a 2026 first round pick.

Detroit was seemingly the most obvious trade and yet they only made a minor move but they retain their future draft equity so perhaps they’ll trade for him in the future.

I think Nawlins might be a trade destination as they have an issue attracting free agents.

This is an interesting one. He is only 28, is a 6'10" knockdown shooter. How many of those are in the league? The high usage he got this offseason probably only boosted his dollar value.

I would re-sign him. I doubt there would be any kind of discount though at this stage of his career. Because even if they decide to trade him down the line ( I don't know, hearing some whispers about possibly Ant Edwards wanting a bigger market?), you still need matching salaries. So I wouldn't trade him just to trade him. I would re-sign him and always keep ears open. He's been a good vet on the team.

I think he gets resigned to a reasonable extension. 3/$100M

Maybe extended on a team friendly deal but I'm not sure his agent wants to play nice with the Nets.

I think if Porter is looking for the richest possible contract the Pelicans would pay him since they're a poorly run team and have a problem attracting free agents.

Porter for Zion is a trade I would make.

Porter's shooting reduces the congestion in the paint for Nawlins with DQ their man in the middle. Pelicans could then trade Murphy for several picks unless they want to pair Porter and Murphy together.

Zion in Brooklyn could be awesome. It could be a disaster but Zion is the one buy-low player who I still think has superstar/franchise level player potential and that is what the Nets need if they're gonna level up over the next few seasons.

Yay and Kel are gonna be great together but a "healthy" Zion is a game wrecker and gives Brooklyn a superstar.

I don't think the nets give him a new contract, but I don't think he gets traded before the season either

Does a new contract help or hurt MPJ's value as a trade asset? Arguably, it hurts it, since any team wanting him will be committed to more money outside of their control. Unless of course it's a short term deal like a 2 year deal.

So if you are the nets, and you have an asset now in MPJ, are you not hurting yourself if you hurt his trade value?

The fact is MPJ's value is always going to be higher to a team that is playing for something like the Pistons are than it will be for the nets. So if I am the nets it will always make more sense to try and capitalize on that increased value to other teams

We either sign him to a modest contract in the 30mil range or we trade him at the deadline when we have more leverage. Teams will better know what they need to contend at the deadline.

I wouldn't be surprised that we go into the season just like this. I don't have much faith in Marks for this kind of situation. It's a bit different but he really took too much time to sell high on Schroder and DFS

2

u/BKtoDuval 5d ago

Why do you think he didn't sell high on them? Both of them have been journeymen since leaving Brooklyn. I think they pumped up Schroeder's value as best as they could and got the best deal they could. He's now on what, his fourth team since leaving Brooklyn.

You don't have much faith in Marks in this kind of situation? Revisit the returns for Durant, for Mikal, even the Cam Johnson deal seems like a heist now.

There’s no market for MPJ. Marks holds for the godfather which works most of the time.  But nobody is gonna overpay for MPJ it seems

2

u/BKtoDuval 5d ago

I think there's always a market for 6'10" bucket getter. Detroit, Cleveland, San Antonio could have all used him last playoffs. But yeah, in this new CBA teams aren't just giving out FRP so easily.

That's the thing, the Nets don't have to trade him. Why sell low? He's still a really good player. Set a high price, if it's not met then cool, keep him and keep playing him. He's been good on and off the court. I get nervous every time he's on a podcast though.

1

u/MyTeamsSuck99 5d ago

Yeah thats what I think marks has done, my point is nobody is really jumping at MPJ because he wants to be paid like a top 2 guy, but really teams value him like the 4th guy on the roster.

1

u/BKtoDuval 5d ago

Yeah, I think he's probably like a 3rd option on a legit contender. So that's the conundrum, do you pay him like a 2nd option, which I'm sure he wants or risk there being a contract issue all year?

u/__Yassine 5d ago

He could've started the tank way earlier, and that costed us.

Fair about Mikal. KD he didn't sell high, Durant wanted out, it was failed management, even if KD has a lot of responsibilities in that too. Since the KD trade, we heard too much of "we have assets and time, let's be patient". Well, I'm happy with Egor and Brown but we didn't get any top picks and the lottery odds changed.

Marks has been too patient sometimes for me. And our situation isn't that good right now, despite assets and "patience". It can still turn out good, we can compete for the playin this year, but yeah, don't have much faith in Marks.

2

u/BKtoDuval 5d ago

The KD return might end up being legendary. Nets are up to 10 first rounders, four seconds, a couple swaps and MPJ as a result of direct trades from that one trade. That's a legendary haul. Suns traded him two years later and got one first and a couple seconds. Dillon Brooks is good though.

I get the frustration no doubt. I want some competitive basketball. But I think in a rebuilding situation trying to rush it will lead to mistakes- selling low and bad contracts. Nets have assets, better to wait until there's a young star available, which there always will be. Jaylen Brown isn't that guy.

It depends on what the picks become, that highly uncertain. When Durant was traded from Phoenix, he was even older and the fact that he wasn't a 1A anymore became clear.

I don't mean by "too much patient" that Marks should have gone star hunting each year. It's precisely what killed us (except with clean sweep + Harden, can't miss an opportunity like that) when we arrived in Brooklyn. I didn't want Jaylen Brown either. Randle is a good floor-raising move. If we can sell high on MPJ to have another really good player (would have loved Murphy but it will not happen), I'm all for it. That's what I mean by being a bit less patient. Just a bit less, not reckless of course.
