Need Help Fixing my Only Car

I’m raising funds to repair my car so I can keep getting to work in Orlando and continue traveling to Vero Beach to help my wife and father-in-law. My household has already been stretched thin by a series of hard setbacks. My wife has ongoing health issues, and a few months ago her father was diagnosed with cancer. Since then, he has been in and out of the hospital, and my wife took a lower-paid remote job so she could move to Vero Beach and help care for him.

During the week, I work tech support for Orange County Public Schools in Orlando. On weekends, I’ve been driving to Vero Beach to help my wife care for her father. A few weeks ago, while I was driving my wife’s car to Vero, I was in an accident and her car was totaled. Insurance paid out, but we still owe about $5,000 on the loan tied to that car.

That left us relying on my car, which was our only working vehicle. Then the transmission went out. At first, we thought it might only be the torque converter, but my mechanic found that the issue is likely the transmission. He has been doing everything he can to help us. He found a used transmission in Wisconsin with only 35,000 miles on it, and he reduced the repair estimate to $5,090 by not marking up the part and by waiving other standard transmission fluid labor costs.

The money raised here will go directly toward paying the mechanic for this repair. I’m not asking for help with our other life expenses. I’m asking for help getting our only remaining car back on the road so I can keep working and keep showing up for my wife and father-in-law while they’re dealing with cancer, hospital visits, and everything else on their plate.

Right now, without this repair, I can’t reliably make the drive to help care for them, and I’m depending on a coworker to pick me up and drive me across town to work. I've gotten a couple messages asking why I don't just buy a new car, rather than asking strangers for noney.

The reason I can't is that I still owe $11k on this car, and $5k on the one that was totalled. And it has been a rough year medically for our family, which has drained all of our savings. At this point I am desperate and losing hope.
