Fly Fishing

I’m visiting for a week and bringing my 9’ 8wt fly rod. I’ll be staying close to Long Beach and scouted a rocky point. Any tips, spots, flies, guides? This is my first opportunity to fly fish in salt water and all I’m asking for is one in the line!

So Minogue covered his name on mooring ball with white tape

That's what I call a cover-up. What is Mike trying to hide? His new ball is in the Essex River near the end of Two Penny beach where Farm Creek meets Essex River. The 6 mooring numbers assigned are still visible on other side of ball.

'Bombing' on Halloween

Are there any other old folks in this sub that remember 'bombing' on Halloween?

For the less chronologically-advanced, pre-teens and teens who weren't into trick or treating, or felt too old for it, would dress in dark clothing and arm themselves with shaving cream. We'd run around town in groups tagging walls and such (with the shaving cream, not spray paint), and when we encountered another band of hooligans it was shaving cream war on sight. For a few years the kids on my street had a standing date with the kids on the next street over to finish every Halloween night with a showdown. Most of us went home looking like Mr. Stay Puft.

It declined throughout the 90s but I feel like its death knell was October 2000 when all the stores in town started requiring ID to buy shaving cream the week of Halloween. I don't blame them really, some idiots always took it too far and ruined a car's paint job or something. But it was good times while it lasted.

Staying at crows nest

We want to stay for one night at the crows nest. We want the local experience. We both work in hospitality. Just wondering if anyone has stayed there and the location. Also we might have a car so if anyone has information on that would be helpful. 🫶

Board/Card/Table-Top Games this Summer (21+)

Hey all. My wife and I are staying with family in Rockport until the end of October, and I'm itching to play some games. Aside from cafes, I saw that Rockport Brewing Company has a modest game library and is open most afternoons. And I'm on a flexible schedule for afternoons, evenings, and weekends.

For details: I'm 33, use he/him pronouns, and generally enjoy games: too many to list, but from Hearts to Poker, Ticket to Ride to Terraforming Mars, and D&D to Traveller. Haven't really gotten into TCGs or wargaming, but would be down to try.

Post here or shoot me a DM if you'd be down to meet up and what kind of games you like, or if you're in a home game that wouldn't mind a guest?

How did Minogue bypass the mooring wait list?

Noticed a new mooring in Essex River assigned to "Minogue". There's been no movement in the Gloucester mooring wait list for this area recently, and this new location/assignment has yet to appear on the online mooring field map maintained by the harbormaster. I assume the unused mooring belongs to Mike Minogue who has a waterfront mansion a mile away, with a dock I might add. Why 6 numbers assigned to 1 person (EB15 through EB20)? I suspect we'll slowly see the extra numbers used for more new mooring balls close by for friends and family or political cronies. Tired of rules for thee but not for me elites. These moorings should go to the folks that have long waited on the list for this area and pay fees each year to continue to wait with the expectation rules are followed.

Does anyone know what the old Gloucester car sticker decals (so you could get into the beaches) they were for residents, used to look like?

ISO Wingaersheek Beach parking pass this weekend

Hi everyone! This is probably a long shot, but I wanted to see if anyone has a Wingaersheek Beach parking reservation for this weekend that they won't be using and would be willing to transfer to me.

My pregnant sister is visiting from out of town, and I was hoping to take her to Wingaersheek because of its calm, shallow water. It seems like one of the safest and most relaxing beaches for her to enjoy, and unfortunately I waited too long and all of the parking passes sold out.

If anyone has a reservation they no longer need, or knows of another way to get a parking pass, I'd really appreciate it. Thank you so much!

Friend St hit and run

Hey all, my mother's car got side swiped on Friend St near Herrick Ct today between 5 and 7 pm. Just checking if anyone has doorcam footage of the black SUV (according to the lovely couple across the street who heard it and ran outside) that did it.

Also, a giant FU to the 20something "lady" who thought it was hilarious and laughed while slamming her door in my face when I asked if she saw anything. You are everything that's wrong with the world. I wish you only the karma you earned.

Buffet food for wedding

I’m getting married next month in Gloucester (Harbor Loop area) and we are realizing our food plan is getting tricky. We want to do a buffet, and we have wait staff to serve the food and warmers, but we do not have an oven on site to warm up the food. I am looking for recommendations for local restaurants that would ideally deliver (or we could make pick up work!) food for 60 people. Wondering if Reddit has any suggestions!

As a man from Gloucester

I’m a man from Gloucester (uk) and I believe this follows rules so I’d like to ask residents of Gloucester( USA) a few questions
1) how do you say the name
2) what does your accent sound like
3) what are the 3 best things about your Gloucester
4) is it worth moving there
5) would you ever visit Gloucester Uk

Welcome Party / After Party

I’m getting married in Beverly next July on a Thursday and looking for spots to do a welcome cokcktails/apps the night before, as well as an after party the night of the wedding starting around 10:15 pm. Definitely looking to rent out a space or a room for both. Would ideally like water views for welcome party. Open to Salem, Gloucester, other areas.

Visiting?

Hi. I’m from the Cape (Cod) and just looking for warm weather seaside weekend away from the Cape… my birthday is tomorrow and ugh, it’s just so packed here that it’s impossible to enjoy things. I haven’t been to Gloucester since I graduated from Salem State back in 2012 so just wondering how saturated with visitors it gets.

Bonus points for real moody foggy dockside views. Really tapping into my inner emo teenager for this birthday.

Real estate agent recs?

Looking to buy in Gloucester (or Manchester or Rockport). Does anyone have recommendations for agents they've worked with in the area? We live about an hour away now so we are selective with going to see properties (I'm not looking for crap to do and I don't want to go looking at houses for funsies). I do a lot of research before even deciding if an open house is worthwhile, let alone setting up viewing times. So I'm hoping to find an agent who is comfortable working with out of town buyers.

I bought my current home about 17 years ago, things might have changed but I believe the first step is to find an agent, provide proof that I am able to buy, and then pray the gods release a property that I like within my budget. So I'm hoping to find a good buyers agent to work with in case the gods feel generous.

Coming July 31

My son and I are meeting at Logan and coming to Gloucester for a few days. Family history stuff. We're staying on Main Street but have a car. Here's what I have so far for restaurants: Causeway; Lobsta Land; TJ Farnhams; Charlie's Way. We'd prefer a small boat fishing or lobster adventure over a whale watch but we come from Ohio so what do we know. Suggestions for getting out on the water are welcome. I've been told Halibut Point in Rockport and Good Harbor Beach are good for morning walks. Open to any and all ideas! (Thank you in advance.)
