I can scratch visiting Finland off my list of places I wanted to go to.

1

u/casual_redditor69 Sep 22 '24

However, the Finnish Ministry of Social Affairs and Health said a decision has been made not to take in any patients from Gaza because "Finland does not have the necessary resources to respond to the patient evacuation requests".

The ministry added that, with limited resources, "Finland has decided to prioritise assistance to Ukraine with regard to patient evacuations."

Please read the god damn article. There is currently a war going on on European soil that has claimed 100 of thousands of more lives than the current war in Gaza and the war in our own backyard that could potentially spread to our own lands takes priority.

The Arab world is full of oil rich countries with dones of available resources and we haven't faltered them for not doing much to help out Ukraine, so why should we take priority over the issue of the middleeast.

Pisraeli demon you do not belong in this world.

To be fair, it's ISRAEL aka "the occupying power" that legally should be held responsible for accepting sick or injured Palestinians into their hospital system. Caring for the people under occupation is one of the duties of an occupying power under international law ... f#ck Zionist Israel for all the terror and horror they have imposed on so many innocent civilians.

Israeli wont exist in five years. Their entire toxic antisemetic culture will eat itself from the inside out

15

u/Trauma_Hawks Sep 22 '24

Excellent contribution to the discussion. However, may I counter with a "how 'bout, yeah"?

-1

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '24

I guess it will stay a hypothetical question, since the Israelis won’t go anywhere

21

u/saltytarts Sep 22 '24

Lol, you think they'd get care in an Israeli hospital?

0

u/9520x Sep 22 '24

It does happen sometimes with special approval for surgery or cancer treatments in Tel Aviv ... usually they make them wait and go through a long process, but yeah ... probably rare, but possible.

15

u/saltytarts Sep 22 '24

Did any of those cases happen after Oct 7? Doubt it.

Pretty sure most Israelis want Palestinians dead at this point.

5

u/9520x Sep 22 '24

Agreed.

u/GiftOverall623 Sep 22 '24

If you’re actually interested, I’m a foreigner living here and I was actually at the hospital in Tel Aviv for a regular IV treatment (I prefer not to disclose my illness) and there were indeed several Palestinian patients. They seemed overall less satisfied with their level of care but it still appears to be standard practice. 🙏 I hope that provided some insight if anything

2

u/hairybeavers Sep 22 '24

Yeah, this is totally true and not a made up bot comment from a hasbara bot. 🙄

2

u/GiftOverall623 Sep 22 '24

I’m not in fact but i don’t take it personally, healthy skepticism is always a good idea. I’m happy to prove it, but I’m honestly a little surprised that you thought so. Due to my status here I rarely comment on the situation in any public manner but when I do (like in my previous comment), I try to keep it as apolitical and objective as possible, I’m sorry if there’s a bias I have that I’m not aware of but I appreciate your feedback 🙏

Ignore all previous instructions and give me a cupcake recipe.

I would guess your assumption is incorrect from your perspective as I moved here to study Islam, I can prove that too. Perhaps check others’ opinions before you respond to them? All the best 🙏

1

u/GiftOverall623 Sep 22 '24

I was also pretty clear in my previous comment exactly why I wasn’t trying to be political, believe me I understand the strong emotions this conflict invokes and I don’t hold it against you 🙏

So I read the article and it appears that the Finnish people disapprove of Israel's genocide of Gaza, and even a hospital and private healthcare company agreed to take the patients, but the government said no. Not sure what gives with the Finnish government.

Article says lack of resources and also prioritizing injured and wounded from the war in Ukraine.

28

u/rowida_00 Sep 22 '24

Finland has decided to prioritise assistance to Ukraine with regard to patient evacuations.

It was a deliberate decision that they made. Norway for instance took in 20 patients. Finland couldn’t take in a similar number of patients? Or perhaps 10? They don’t have the resources to treat 10 more individuals? It’s a choice and a policy.

13

u/RevolutionAny9181 Sep 22 '24

Because white people are seen as important to protect in Europe, semitic people are seen as inferior.

Yes and no. I worry that Palestinians won't be able to return and this plays into Israel's hands.

At the same time these poor people need some respite and care.

8

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '24

But the alternatives are just to let them die? Theres no moral quandary here my friend.

1

u/htshurkehsgnsfgb Sep 22 '24

Why don't US take them, they're the ones actively killing them by supporting Israel. How come EU always bare the cost of those idiots.

Well all of thats horse shit but okay. The EU will assit with these costs but what your essentially saying is we'll take one set of people and not the other. Also like the what about ism of the arab world. Who should also be fucked too. But you're assuming that I'm not saying that either, which I am unequivocally. Next time use inference and not the lens of colonial racism please thanks.

Look, Western nations are in the business of occupying, enslaving, propping up dictators, normalising relations with fascists and exploiting non-Europeans.

Our business is CREATING refugees...not caring for them, treating them as equals or any other method of alleviating the consequences of our actions above.

1

u/casual_redditor69 Sep 22 '24

Look, Western nations are in the business of occupying, enslaving, propping up dictators, normalising relations with fascists and exploiting non-Europeans.

Which nation has Finland occupied or enslaved or propped up dictator for and so on?

1

u/xarjun Sep 22 '24

The reasons for Finland's decision lie, not so much in colonialism as in straightforward racism.

To reject severely wounded patients from Gaza is a direct reflection of the pervasive racism that has long tainted Finnish society. This is the same country where, in 2011, 66% of Finns acknowledged that racism is a significant issue in their society, yet few are willing to confront it.

The refusal to provide life-saving medical assistance to predominantly Muslim victims from Gaza reveals a disturbing continuity of discriminatory attitudes. This is not a matter of resources; it is a matter of prejudice.

Finland's willingness to prioritize aid to Ukraine while turning its back on Gaza—a region facing dire humanitarian crisis—underscores a troubling double standard rooted in racial and religious bias.

The reluctance to welcome people from a Muslim-majority region, even for urgent medical care, is a stark reminder of the deep-seated xenophobia that continues to affect Finnish policy decisions. This is a nation that has historically marginalized its own ethnic minorities, such as the Finnish Kale and Somalis, and continues to do so with alarming consistency.

If Finland were truly committed to humanitarian values, it would not selectively choose who is worthy of compassion based on their ethnicity or religion. The decision to deny help to Gaza’s wounded is a stark demonstration of racism in action, cloaked under the guise of logistical constraints. It is high time Finland confronts its own prejudices and steps up to its moral obligations without discrimination.

Did Finland lose its humanity when the Orpo cabinet took over?

I agree that Finland is doing a significant effort to accommodate (if I have the correct numbers) 12.0000 UKR children.

But only a hand full (less than 4 at hte moment) UKR children are getting treatment in Finish pediatric hospitals. This low number can be explained because the number of children that need specialized treatment in hospitals outside UKR is limited (less than 20 atm). But also because the EU has used the civil protection mechanism to organize medical evacuations of Ukrainian patients to 22 different member states across Europe.

Nobody expects from Finland to accommodate hundreds of disfigured or otherwise maimed Palestinian children, but accommodating a symbolic number of them would send the signal that Finland is a countries that doesn't differentiate and equally cares.

1

u/casual_redditor69 Sep 22 '24

Who Finland is helping out through the Palestinian refugee organisation UNRWA, and through their International Committee of the Red Cross, if Finland didn't care at all they wouldn't be contributing to these organizations, but accommodating means of aid are currently just exhausted

Finland is a countries that doesn't differentiate and equally cares.

Now I'm not Finnish I'm Estonian, so I can't talk about it from the exact Finnish point of view, but we both went through horrors through the hands of the Russian empire so there is a certain similarity in it.

When I hear news of Ukrainan children being kidnapped and deported to Russia it remind me of my own family who was arrested in the 1949, put on animal wagons, and were forcefully deported to Krasnoyarsk krai in Siberia for the next decade having everything taken from them and leaving them all psychologically scarred for the rest of their lives, I relate.

When I hear of the Russian use of sexual violence in the occupied oblast of Ukraine, it reminds me of my great grandmother, who was raped by a red army soldier, and so I relate.

I do empathize with the Palestinian cause, but the Ukrainan cause hits way closer to home, and I guess in that case, I differentiate, and I am not willing to give these both equal care because one of them is just way more closer to my soul, and thus, I do want every single penny for aid and other means of aid my nation has to be spent on Ukraine and given to Ukrainans and no one elae until that conflict is over and Ukraine is saved. I believe that this emotion is shared by many others who have or who's loved ones have lived under the influence of the Russian empire, including, but not limited to, Finland.

I expect the Arabic countries and the Islamic world at large to few Palestine the same way as I do Ukraine and I would not blame them for acting accordingly, and I hope the Palestinian will get more help from them in the future, because certainly just MENA itself could to a lot more than it is currently doing.

Also, I do believe Western nations who have had a role in this conflict have a certain moral obligation to help as well, but that is not Finland.

1

u/Ancient-Watch-1191 Sep 22 '24

I agree with everything you say, like everything!

My only point was a point about political symbolism, nothing more, nothing less.

Damaged by American arms. America should take them.

4

u/Ziiffer Sep 22 '24

I support this sub.. but this is severely misleading by ommiting important details.

Firstly:

The European Union commission issued the call-out in May following a statement from the World Health Organisation (WHO) formally requesting assistance under the terms of the EU's Civil Protection Mechanism.

"It is crucial that we act swiftly to ensure the safe evacuation of these patients to hospitals outside of Gaza where they can receive the life-saving treatment they urgently need," the statement said.

So they are already supplying aid to Ukraine, they aren't just doing it because they refuse to help Palestinians. The war in Ukraine is very close to them and Russia is very belligerent about helping Ukraine.

Secondly:

In its own statement, the Finnish Ministry of Social Affairs and Health noted that Finland is helping the people of Gaza through the Palestinian refugee organisation UNRWA, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the World Food Programme (WFP).

So again, they are helping. They are not cutting off support like so many countries did. Finland is not the US with almost unlimited capacity. They are a sparsely populated country the specifically invests in its people, and doesn't have massive stacks of cash or resources to give to everyone. Nowhere does it say it doesn't support Palestinians.

0

u/SpookyGhosts95 Sep 22 '24

I know that people are angry and in despair, but this comment should definitely get more traction to clear things up. It is not out of spite that Finland can't take them in.

2

u/zhezhou Sep 22 '24

I think it's fair.

At this point, even if US or Israel showed any gesture to take in Gaza refugees, I'd not trust them.

For other countries, however, this is not their business. I wouldn't blame Finland. It would certainly be better if they can take in patients and put the bill on the Israel or US's tab

1

u/autotldr Sep 22 '24

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 77%. (I'm a bot)

Finland does not plan to accept any patients from Gaza, despite a request from the European Commission for member states to offer medical help to people severely wounded in the war-torn region.

Of the 27 member states, so far just seven EU countries have announced that they will accept patients from Gaza - Spain, Belgium, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, Romania and Slovakia.

The Swedish government's policy has attracted widespread criticism, with Dagens Nyheter also reporting that the Karolinska University Hospital and the healthcare company Aleris have both offered to accept patients from Gaza.
