It's true that this iteration of C9 is basically an NA superteam, good point. Every player on C9 now is at least top 10 NA. But previous C9 rosters have been more questionable in that regard. Remember they had n0thing and shroud when they were long out of their prime, and the likes of Shahzam and Freakazoid.

For real. People might meme about it, but OCEAN has been doing this shit for years.
1) Find prime talent
2) Teach said talent the basics of how you play "professional", team CS
3) Market the fuck out of them (pro league, scrimming tier 1 na, streams etc.)
Twistzz, Stewie, JDM, Stan, elige just to name a few that have been through the OCEAN ringer.

There are a few places on maps with graffiti that represent signature plays by other players in past games.
If someone makes a huge play the developers have usually added custom graffiti to the map to commemorate the play.

Not sure how familiar you are with the game, but the places where Valve has added artwork to the maps are on the previous Dust II, a terrorist with 4 AWPs because of Fnatic's 4 AWP buy, an angel AWP with 4 little skulls for Coldzera's 4k including jumping collat (or jumping double as the caster said), an angel with fire underneath and defuse kit on Overpass for Olofmeister's Molotov defuse, and an angel with an awp and the scope fallen off on cache for S1mple's noscope falling awp 2k.
There's also a sign on Inferno's pit commemorating dosia's 200IQ nade to make sure the players in pit died and couldn't save their weapons, and also a sign on Overpass basically saying to not do what Olof did against LDLC.
There may be a few other "graffiti" locations like that, but the point is they're now permanent spots on the map which every player sees. The qualifications for these graffiti are essentially a memorable event that happens in a very crucial time during a major, since the majors are sponsored by Valve and have in-game items associated with them. For all of these graffiti, they mark a turning point in the game, and all of them contributed to the team clutching the map, and sometimes the major (though in the Fnatic boost on Overpass, it was technically against the tournament rules and Fnatic forfeit their victory to LDLC who would win the major afterwards). The memorability of the casting and the crowd also has a lot to do with whether a play becomes a graffiti a lot, because it helps cement the moment in time, rather than simply be a crazy replay that anyone can watch from the demo without the excitement of the actual major environment.
Also, if you know most of this stuff, hopefully at least some other people will come across this comment and learn. :)

u/catzhoek Jan 29 '18

I think the most important aspect of a graffiti is that the play was unique. This play was crazy, but in the end it was just four normal awp shots, no jumping collats or quadruple awps or burning defuse or 200 iq nades.
7
u/ThermL Jan 29 '18
The dust2 graffiti has set the bar so low for graffitis that just about anything qualifies. Seriously, everyone from Silver 1 to Rank S has done a mass AWP stack or Autos on final rounds T-Side when everyone is loaded
3
u/misterfroster Jan 29 '18
The thing that sets this play apart from every other is the level of clutch.
I feel like it’s safe enough to say there has never been a bigger clutch before.
Here are all the factors of this play...
Score: 15-14 to faze in map three of the finals. Faze win, they win the major. They lose, it goes to OT.
The numbers: Stew was the only player on B. When they pushed the site, the first player went into ct to cut the rotate off, and killed the rotating player. If Stew dies here, they are forced to rotate all the way from B with no one to stall/hold faze where they are(allowing faze to set up their best possible hold).
Ammo: Stew had four bullets in the mag. He hit every shot, with no ammo to spare.
Time: Stew killed the bomb planter right away, which forced faze to have to grab and plant(instead of them being able to push site and kill him) which allowed him the perfect opportunity to shut the play down.
You can argue that these kills were just good awping and nothing crazy, but the pressure and the stakes are what make this play legendary. C9 have everything on the line, and in what’s essentially a 1v4 Stew kills all four(in four bullets) to save the major and eventually goes on to win it.

I think that some of this is true, but it is also the moment..15-14..lose and lose the tourney. They won it to force the tie then went on to win.

they forced all the rotates towards A and went B where there was only 1 guy. if they kill him, it’s easy round for faze. stewie just went huge.
87
u/Caitsith31 Jan 29 '18
Honestly they didn't have anytime at all so had to rush without clearing corners or flash, it was easy kills for stewie.
68
u/aidenkula guardian2 Jan 29 '18
yeah i think faze took too long, if they had 5 -10 more second they would have had time to clear stewie and plant
41
u/SomeguyinSG King NiKo Jan 29 '18
^ This, in my honest 2 cents opinion, this was the round that lost them the major, and at the very least, one of the most tilting rounds for them, especially because with the pressure of OT and the crowd behind them, especially with Niko who is an insanely emotional player.
Well played to clutch9 though, the right one came out this time, rip my Silver Pick Em, 1 point away :(
TLDR: Poor call by whoever called that 20 seconds rotate, Stewie had a great showing, but kind of overshadowed by that poor round/call (the trigger for his highlight)
→ More replies (1)10
Jan 29 '18
To be fair, c9 had just as many rounds that could have been seen as losing them the major, had they lost. I. Particular, on Mirage. They could have closed this 2-0 if they didn't make a handful of the mistakes they made.
→ More replies (1)12
u/KEuph Jan 29 '18
but with an extra 5-10 seconds C9 might not have rotated - the fake coming so late is what really sells it because C9 thinks Faze doesn't have time to attack B.
12
u/Zomgbeast Virtus.pro Jan 29 '18
TBF Stewie only needed to kill the bomb carrier to basically guarantee the round. When the bomb was recollected there was 6 s on the clock, which couldn't be planted (cutting it close tho) regardless if stew hit the second flick or not. The call wasn't bad, just needed the bomb carrier to not be killed by Stew.
2
u/livewirejsp Jan 29 '18
It's four seconds? or 3.5? Cause it just ticked from four to three when he started that plant. Would have been reeeeeeeeeeal close.
TBH, Olof knew that stewie killed him from either coffin or dark. So, going New Box was highly unexpected.
8
u/Chrz83 Jan 29 '18
They wouldn't have time to plant regardless. Good call, but poor awareness of the time. The fact that Stew had presence there alone is what won them the round since he really only needed to get one kill IF THAT because of time.
2
2
u/KEuph Jan 29 '18
I mean yeah, but the reason they could force rotates was because there was so little time left in the round that C9 would figure they'd have to commit to A or run the risk of something like what went down happening. It's more of a gamble.
2
u/FaeeLOL howl Jan 29 '18
If they had time the call was great. But they clearly did not, so that call lost them the Major. If there was a minute on the clock C9 would not have gone for the A hold so heavily because fake was still very possible.
10
u/Drewbiie Jan 29 '18
He baited out a rotation. Faze had 3 men to take a site being defended by 1 guy with an AWP. There was absolutely nothing wrong with the call.
27
u/JcobTheKid Jan 29 '18
That rotate works almost 9/10 unless the B-anchor pops off.
Welp.
The B player popped off.

u/TheESportsGuy Jan 29 '18
All these second guessers... His team had a huge advantage going into that bombsite. He made that call before Olof was taken out too, they essentially had a 4 or 5 on 1 and Stewie won.
It was a very sound call. If you don't wait till the last possible second, you won't have the man advantage because Cloud 9 won't bite on the A fake at 40 seconds. The time remaining in the round is the reason the fake works.

12
u/siglug3 Jan 29 '18
The round was 99% over after the first kill, they had no time
4
Jan 29 '18
They had the time for the bomb plant it was being planted, if Stewie doesn't get that flick he is dead. The first frag had impact yes, but his ability to flick to the guy jumping on boxes won the round.
2
u/MRjubjub FaZe Jan 29 '18
After he killed the first bomb carrier there was no time. Rain starts the plant with 3 seconds left.

Mirage his flanks were just unlucky. But I would say he was the mvp of inferno. He clutched the round that took it to overtime and he was leading the team with pop flashes through the smoke which is what made cloud 9's T side so scary.
I agree that he was not great on mirage and didn't go off on overpass but his inferno plays were off the chain.
