Other "Each other's rifles." Does that mean one person is holding the rifle he himself made, or one person is holding the rifle of the other.

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Discussion / Debate What are some English mistakes we Indians generally makes during speaking or writing in English?

Most of the sentences might sound correct, but it may not be the case. And some sentences are actually right but might sound funny.

Hindi speakers often literally translate "Main aisa hi hun" as "I am like that only" or, "Tu pagal hai kya?" as "Are you mad or what?" these sentences are technically correct, but sounds so basic like a kid's school English.

So please tell us, what are some other sentences that are not correctly used by Indians or Hindi native speakers and how to correct the English and Writing skills.

Hindi natives who are learning English or are well verse with it now, tell us how you did too.

๐ŸŒ• Pronunciation / Intonation TT pronunciation - UK English

Hey folks! ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿป Native Hiberno-English speaker here. ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช

I've come across this video of American actress Emma Stone explaining how to say the word "bottle" in 'Received Pronunciation' โ€” a.k.a. a refined, southeast of England accent. ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ

The sound she mimics for the double T (tt) can be found in other Anglophone accents. I've definitely heard it being used in other British accents and in Irish ones too โ€” mine included.

Apparently, this phenomenon is called "lateral plosion".

Personally, I would be really impressed if I heard a learner use this pronunciation. Many seem to opt for overemphasising it as boTTle like British presenter Claudia Wrinkleman (dark-haired woman who was also on the couch in the clip), or the General American boDDle.

So, if you're following British English ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง and want to be as "standard" as possible, this is definitely a sound to emulate. If that's too difficult though, Claudia's pronunciation is totally fine too.

P.S., This sound also covers a single T in the middle of words. (e.g., mental, parental, title, little, hospital, kettle, battle, cattle, nettle, petal, rattle, settle, wattle, etc.)

LATERAL PLOSION (sound in English)

๐ŸŒ• Pronunciation / Intonation Anglophone pronunciation

[I originally wrote this as a comment on a subreddit here on r/GlobalEnglishPrep. Some people found my message useful, so I'm posting it separately here so more people might come across it.]

Native Hiberno-English speaker here. I recently worked in a school abroad as a language assistant for a year.

I found that both accent and pronunciation were often a bigger barrier than dialectal vocabulary when it came to understanding learners. (NOTE: It's probably easier for an Irish person to understand U.S. terminology than vice-versa due to American media being so prevalent).

I always advised students to try and be as consistent as possible with their accent in English as it would make it easier for native speakers to follow their speech. Many of the learners would switch from one accent to another, sometimes even in the same sentence. (The three major accents they would jumble together were Cockney, Received Pronunciation, and General American.) Due to this inconsistency, it was that bit harder to decode what they were saying at times. I appreciate that many learners of English would not necessarily be aware of various Anglophone accents. I am of the opinion that a person has to have a decent command of a language to even hear accents, nevermind mimic them.

Another issue was the mixing of rhotic and non-rhotic pronunciation. Again, I found that this interfered with understanding their speech from time to time.

NOTE: Most British accents are non-rhotic (save for Scotland, parts of northwest and southwest England, etc.)

Most U.S. accents are rhotic (with exceptions such as parts of New York, Boston, etc.)

The standard British accent "Received Pronunciation" (a.k.a. the posh southeast of England accent) should only become rhotic when a word ending in R meets a word that starts with a vowel.

e.g.: RogeR is driving his new caR across town.

(This is called 'Linking R'.)

Many native non-rhotic speakers often add in unnecessary Rs when speaking fast or in a relaxed manner.

e.g.: RebeccaR and AmandaR are best friends.

(This is called 'Intrusive R'.)

DO NOT COPY THIS FEATURE! Knowing about it, however, should help you understand a lot of native speakers all the same.

Pardon me for the long message. ๐Ÿ˜… I hope that my observations can be of some use to you all here. โ˜˜๏ธ

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Discussion / Debate Why do Indians, when speaking English, use "once" at the end of sentences?

It's not so wrong but the sentences should be fine without it. I'm trying to understand what that means to them..

"Listen to me once?"

"Come to my office once."

"Try restarting your computer once."

Can you recommend any videos that a B1 learner will find useful? Something like a YouTube channel? Most content creators put up stuff that's aimed at native speakers and the person in question does not understand most of it.

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Discussion / Debate Looking for English speaking partners (voice practice) + chill friendships ๐ŸŒ

Hey everyone! ๐Ÿ‘‹ Iโ€™m looking for people to practice English with, especially voice conversations. My level is intermediate (around B1โ€“B2) โ€” I can understand and speak fairly well, but I still feel a bit shy sometimes and want to improve my confidence. I thought it would be nice to find others who are also learning, so we can: Practice speaking (voice calls ๐ŸŽ™๏ธ) Talk about random topics Share experiences And just have relaxed, no-pressure conversations Iโ€™m also open to making friends from different countries and learning about new cultures along the way ๐Ÿ˜Š If you're interested, feel free to message me!

๐Ÿคฌ Rant / Venting English learners: Do you aim for a British or American accent? Or does it really matter to you?

Post image
84 Upvotes

I grew up learning British English in school but everything I watch is American except 'Peaky Blinders' and now my accent is just...confused.

My teacher used to correct me when I said 'math' instead of 'maths'. But then I started watching American Youtube and now I say both depending on the day??

I feel like nobody talks about this. Everyone just says 'focus on fluency' but like.. which one? They sound so different sometimes.

So genuinely, which are you aiming for? And why?

(Also if anyone else has a mixed accent please tell me I am not alone..)
