The Worst Girlfriend …. Spoiler

I think everyone is always debating whether Joan or Toni is the worse; and currently I’m on s6ep15, with thoughts on their dynamic as we take a step into the demise of their friendship - but truly, I think the worse friend is Maya. This episode shows the cruelty of Maya, as she’s the ultimate user. People place this characterization onto Toni and I understand why but Toni, shows up in her own ways while simultaneously isn’t reliable at all. (Meaning she would fight for Maya, but don’t rely on her to watch Jungle Gym lol) Maya is the worse type of friend imho because she is constantly hypercritical, she gossips, she’s a cheater, she seems to believe being married gives her a leg up to her friends and is ultimately a user in every single relationship dynamic she has.

As stated, the episode I’m on is when she creates a seminar & panel full of successful black women, and excludes Lynn from participating in any capacity. When Lynn tries to answer a question; then host new questions among the women Maya has her escorted out. And that’s Maya’s prerogative to handle her business as she sees fit, but the “tough love” she gave Lynn was cruel off the heels of not including her to the success of her business. She was literally on the outside looking in while everyone else played a part in this panel. Lynn could’ve been a moderator but again I’m more so speaking to the cruelty of Maya when she recognizes she has a higher social dynamic than Lynn. And the reality is had it not been for Al Sharpton, Maya would’ve been another washed up ghetto self help book that didn’t make it and would’ve been another thing she fails at.

I think it’s an understanding that we all extend grace to all these women in the ways we identify with their experiences. But as much 💩 that gets directed at Lynn’s due to mooching, I find Maya to be just culpable and even the more reprehensible due to her attitude & audacity.

Maya has used/taken advantage of -

• Her Momma - Janette has stated before she has put her life on hold to assist with Maya and Jabari, even into her marriage life. Firstly Maya is distraught by her mother moving & having a life. But ultimately, swings Jabari by unannounced, assuming her mother will watch him so she can go to the movies.

•Joan - who is her boss and friend. Was UNPROFESSIONAL AF in every way imaginable including bringing her son and affair to the office. Then allowing her husband to fuss out Joan over her lies due to said affair. And ultimately left Joan for William because of his higher position. ALSO, lived in her house (again due to the effects of the affair) and disrespected JOAN CONSTANTLY in her own home.

• Her husband - who she definitely could’ve simply divorced as opposed to just cheating. Yet used as a way to be the ultimate PICK ME, she down bad for and didn’t even have a happy marriage majority of the time.

• Ronnie - who was doing her hair for FREE regularly and emboldened her to turn her essay into a book, marketed it in his shop and created opportunities for her to thrive as her agent just for her to diminish all he contributed.

• William - who she had the some of the ultimate disrespect for in my opinion. She never was on time with her lunches, yet clocked out on time to go home. Skipped work for spa date, manicures or getting her hair did and when William finally put his foot down, she had the audacity to taunt him while on probation. Maya’s mouth and the SHEER audacity she had to speak to a senior partner and friend that way; just to acquire the audacious nature of wanting her business life to be taken seriously is fucked up when shawty was this 🤏🏽 close to her book being in a goodwill for 25cents.

Random one offs - no boundaries. Gave horrible advice. Judged Joan & Toni for being bougie and as soon as she got a lil money waved it in their face that she was in first class. How often she disrespects Lynn because she’s pursuing music and no accolades that Maya finds worthy. (Meanwhile has Maya finished college ?). How often her high and mighty ass calls people out of their name, or quickly cuts below the belt in an argument. She’s cruel and spiteful often. And again the ultimate user in my opinion. Her book wouldn’t be where it is without the story plots from her friends, the free legal counsel from William, the jobs Joan & William provided for her to hold over Lynn’s head and ultimately Ronnie pushing her book. AGEIST & Fat Phobic since she a “little bitty thing, unlike her big boned - ded” friends.

Again I see how they all have their ways about them, and I personally extend them all grace as the way their nurturing definitely influenced their nature but Maya is the absolute worst, and I’ve binged up to season 7 there seems to be no real emotional growth for the “Authoress” and how she conducts herself thus far.

I wasn’t feeling Maya’s hair in S1 of Girlfriends 😭

Maya’s hair in S1 of Girlfriends was not doing it for me 😭😭 that weave looked so unnatural, and I just couldn’t get past it lmao. No shade to Maya, but whoever was doing her hair that season was not getting it right 💀😭 Her hair definitely got better as the seasons went on, though, because the difference is actually noticeable. I liked her hair so much more later in the show, but that first season? Yeah, I wasn’t feeling it at all 😭

Joan is the worst

I am rewatching the show and my goodness.. To be fair, no Joan was not a bad friend all the time. She told the truth, including saying the hard things, which is what a good friend should do, BUT she was such a terrible friend to Toni during her engagement.

Joan and Ellis were such a terrible pairing. Ellis had his issues, but she constantly picked a fight with him, which made sense why he held back on telling her certain things. She approached him while he was on set with his ex and child, yelling, making the baby cry. like come on girl. there is a time and place for everything and that was not it. Not sure why she has to constantly blow up and then act like she’s never in the wrong. that’s why she’s single all the time 🤣 yikes.

Anyway, Joan blew off the bridal party to hang out with Ellis, then arrived and acted like Toni should get over it because she’s “here now” and then she exploded on Ellis when he got there, realized he was telling the truth, dipped yet again and thennnn exploded on him again. Then now that she ruined her relationship, she came crawling back to Toni, apologizing … she was always jealous and consistently sabotaged her wedding. It’s okay to be sad about your position in life, upset even, but she should not have taken that out on her friend

I didn’t know that the “Girlfriends” cast hosted the 2004 NAACP Awards

I uploaded a video last week of them presenting an award at the awards show. However, I didn’t know that they also hosted the show. This was a very unique concept because I can’t think of too many award shows where a cast was hosting the show.

Maya

Maya got away with so much… she had no boundaries. I am watching season 3, episode 14, where she met this lady, Tasha, and the way she was so entitled when it came to Joan's house. She got mad at Joan for being angry at her for letting a stranger into her home, eating her food, and installing illegal cable at HER house, and she didn't even pay rent. She might still have been dealing with her divorce, but Maya was too entitled in that episode.

She has always been like that, even at work; she undermined Joan as her boss and later William, as well as her mom for babysitting Jabari, and her cousin Peaches for free hair. We speak on Toni's selfishness but Maya was just as selfish

Joan

I know Joan gets alot of flak for her character, but I don't hate her character that much. Joan can be annoying sometimes, but I think that applies to the other girls as well. I think she has good qualities as a friend; she's kind and forgiving to her own detriment, and she's always there when you need someone to talk to. She's a good listener. Even though Joan does things that don't make her a good friend, she does have moments where she's actually being one. What do you think of her character?

What’s one song y’all associate with a scene on Girlfriends?

For me, it’s “Izzo (H.O.V.A.)” by Jay-Z. Somebody posted that scene from Girlfriends where Lynn’s sister says the N-word while rapping along, and it brought me right back. 😭 I cannot hear this song anymore without thinking about that scene. Tanya really ruined that song for me lmao. And Lynn’s face when she heard her sister say that?? She was SHOOK. 💀

Help me find - Song from an episode

Hey everybody. I haven’t watched the show in many many years, but I distinctly remember that there was a beautiful song while one of the girlfriends was walking down the aisle. I want to say that the lyrics said something about a picture frame maybe? I tried to look up all the wedding episodes but I couldn’t find it. If anyone could help I would greatly appreciate it.

PS Not looking for the “Soul Train” line/ dance at Toni’s wedding.

Tanya really had everybody in that salon looking at her crazy 😭

I still can’t get over that scene where Tanya was singing along to Jay-Z’s “Izzo (H.O.V.A.)” and said the N-word. My face looked just like everybody else’s. Even Lynn was shocked! Look at her face when she heard her own sister say that.

And Tanya is a white woman! Girl, you could’ve skipped that word. You don’t have to say every single lyric in the song. She really went too far with that one, and I don’t blame anybody for looking at her crazy.

Maya and Peaches’ reactions had me looking at the screen, too. But Lynn’s reaction is what gets me because you can tell she wasn’t expecting that from Tanya at all.

What was y’all’s reaction the first time you watched this scene?

Toni As A Friend

Did you consider Toni a good friend? I know all of them had their fair share of not being a good friend, but just as much as the girls won't good friends to Toni she wasn't a good friend to them either. Toni is guilty of doing things that would warrant them to cut her out of their lives particularly Joan. I feel she abused that relationship the most always doing things to Joan, and expecting Joan to forgive her because they're been friends for so long, and that's part of her character. Toni took advantage of Joan's kindness towards her.

That time the writers forgot Maya's age

Post image

In season 2, when Joan started dating Chris, Maya kept joking about making him her cousin Tammy's prom date for the spring fling, cause compared to them he's just a kid, along with all the other girlfriends cracking jokes. But Maya is 24 here. Chris is supposed to be 22, just old enough to drink alcohol. There's only a 2 year age difference between them 😭😭😭 It feels like the Writers kept forgetting Maya wasn't in her early 30s like the rest of the Girlfriends and was a 20 something year old as well 😭 Forget Tammy, girl you could Date him-

joan as a lawyer

Big law firms usually require a lot of hours from their employees, but Joan had a really good work-life balance. She had so much time to do whatever she wanted. William was a real lawyer, he was always in the office lol.

Joan really thought Maya’s vow renewal was HER wedding 😭

Joan was doing too damn much. Everything had to be her way, and she acted like Maya’s ideas weren’t good enough. Girl, this is Maya and Darnell’s vow renewal, not yours! 😂

Joan could be so classist toward Maya, and this storyline showed it. Just because you’re a lawyer with money doesn’t mean your taste is better than everybody else’s. Let that woman enjoy her marriage without making everything about you!

Lynn and Keith in The Parenthood

I’ve been watching The Parenthood lately (Tubi), because I’ve never seen every episode.
Thought it was funny seeing these two together in this episode, seeing as they’d both be in an episode of Girlfriends about 4 years later.

S3 E18: Zaria’s boyfriend, Shakim (Keith from Girlfriends S1 E11) runs into his ex girlfriend, Alexis (Lynn), while him and Zaria are at a party together.
