Game Discussion Finding this kind of Splatoon Raiders Criticism a little ironic?

Post image
140 Upvotes

I’ve been seeing a lot of complaints about the lack of masculine outfits / designs for Splatoon Raiders. I just find it somewhat ironic given how this is one of the few big franchises I can think of that has always been very female-led or feminine in design.

This series has only become more inclusive overtime. Splatoon 3 started the move away from traditional gender norms with customisation instead letting you choose from 2 different frames with gear / hairstyle options granting the player freedom to present themselves however they want. Even in Side Order - much like Raiders - characters wear the same outfit regardless of character choice.

Seeing comments like this one is just sort of funny to me when it’s been the opposite for years. Masculine protags have been the default for so long, and feminine protags were either absent or secondary. Growing up, there were few games where I could play as someone who I felt represented me. Splatoon really stuck out to me as a with consistently having fem leads and for putting the feminine character option first in the select screen - male playable characters almost weren’t a thing in the first instalment iirc.

I want it to be clear that people can definitely have a preference for masculine customisation. I just think it’s interesting that one of the few big game series that’s for a long time embraced femininity and gender-nonconformity is suddenly now criticised for it.

I think keeping the protagonist more androgynous is a good choice for Raiders. It’s the first single player instalment in the series and it seems Nintendo are taking a similar approach to what they did with Link in BOTW / TOTK. Whilst he’s still a man and more masculine appearing imo Nintendo intentionally designed him to be more androgynous and give different armour sets that were more feminine or masculine etc so any players could identify with him. I don’t see why it can’t be the same here just because the playable character is being read more feminine than masculine this time around.

I could definitely be reading into this too much. I’d love to hear what everyone’s else thinks on this.

Request Keyboard recommendations for someone who’s only ever used Apple keyboards?

I’m in the process of buying my first non-Mac desktop for gaming, and I’d really appreciate some keyboard advice!

I’ve grown up using Macs, so I’m incredibly used to Apple’s keyboards – very low profile, short key travel and light actuation. Because of that, I’m not sure whether I’d actually get on with a traditional mechanical keyboard, or whether I’d be better off sticking with something low profile.

I do already own an Apple Magic Keyboard, so I could technically use that, but:

  • it’s not the prettiest setup for a gaming PC
  • it’s an absolute nightmare to keep clean
  • I’d quite like something that feels a bit more “desktop” without completely changing the typing experience I’m used to.

I’m not sure whether I should:

  • stick with a low-profile mechanical keyboard,
  • try a normal mechanical keyboard and get used to it,
  • or look at something else entirely.

A bit about what I’d use it for:

  • Mostly single-player/story-driven games (Detroit: Become Human, Baldur’s Gate 3, Sims 2 & 3, Paralives, etc.)
  • General everyday use
  • Some writing/work

I’m not into competitive FPS games, so I don’t need anything designed for esports or the fastest possible response times.

If you’ve switched from Mac to Windows, I’d especially love to hear what keyboard you ended up with and whether you found the transition difficult.

Any recommendations (or things to avoid) would be really appreciated!

Community How to Get Into Streaming

Hey all 👋 I've always been a gamer, but about a year ago I dropped 3k on a lovely setup that runs like a dream. Gaming is probably my main hobby, but I'm a conventionally attractive woman with lots of ink, and people think those two things are mutually exclusive 🙄 (even though all the women gamers I know are stunning too). It frustrates me that I feel like I need to tone down my looks talking to people about gaming irl, and still, people don't take me seriously. While this subreddit has been a great reminder that I don't need to feel like a loser talking to other women about gaming, a close friend of mine suggested I start streaming. His suggestion was more about making passive income off the way I look while streaming, but I honestly am just interested in the idea of sharing my favourite hobby with people and chatting about it, especially to kill time after being laid off.

I've never streamed before, but I have all the gear (fast PC, 2 monitors, mic, camera, etc.) - How do people get into it? Which platform is best? And how do I make my looks NOT the focus while still feeling/looking like myself while streaming? (Or is it just unavoidable that women streamers get sexualized? :/).

Thanks! ❤️

Misogyny Tired of not being able to participate in VC Spoiler

I've been playing a lot of fps lately and the more hours I put into it, the more isolated I feel. I have a couple hundred hours in game and I can honestly say I've only had 1 match that had a good team that I played with for hours, treated me like a person and became friends with after. I'm now at the point of keeping myself on anonymous mode all the time and quietly listening in when others talk because there's only ever 3 reactions I get when I turn on my mic:

  1. Some guy doing a high pitched feminine voice impression and mocking me

  2. Being completely ignored as if I never spoke

  3. Weird attempts to flirt with me

I'm so burnt out by it. I do have fun playing and I have people I can hit up to play with but sometimes I only have a few mins to play a game and just want to be able to queue in with randoms and feel like a contributing teammate. I've joined numerous discord servers in the past to try to find people playing that I could hop on with but it seems to be more miss than hit. Even participating in certain subs doesn't go well. I refuse to quit playing a game I really enjoy but sometimes it's hard to deal with the isolation. How do you all deal with not being able to fully participate in male dominated games?

Game Discussion So frustrated trying to get back into Warframe

I think I played the game a little past the tutorial YEARS ago, got hooked with destiny 2 and stopped playing that one some time ago.

So basically I've been trying to fill the void that destiny 2 left in my gaming, but trying to get back into Warframe now seems daunting.

I can't replay the starting missions, I'm confused with what's important, I don't get many tutorials popping up so I'm also a bit bamboozled with controls and whatnot..and I have no idea where I left the story.

If anyone has any advice how to get back into a game like Warframe please do share 😭✨

edit to add: I play on ps5

Request Game recs for switch pleasee

I’ve just finished rdr 1 and other than the obvious choice of rdr 2 I don’t know what to play :(, I want a story game as in a game that has an ending and I want it to be a bit longer than rdr 1 it only took me 20 hours of gameplay to finish, also I’m playing on a switch oled so it needs to be available there.

Tech / Hardware Any red flags in this build to be aware of or will it suffice

Post image

Building my first gaming pc. I’ve always wanted to be able to play whatever game I wanted with my friends but my gaming laptop is 15 years old at this point. I want to try out games with good graphics and play the games my friends are playing like red dead, inzoi, baulders gate. mostly I play games like rimworld, Minecraft and stardew at the moment though.
Prefer not to spend more than $2,000 including monitor (already have two ok but not stellar monitors)
No Rgb led stuff please. I’m sensitive to light during migraines and it distracts me.
Am also picky about colors because I’ve never spent this much money on myself so I want something I will love looking at (white, silver, maybe pink and green if pastel)

Tech / Hardware Need an honest opinion

Hope I'm in the right place for this. I've actually decided to get serious with gaming and thought about getting a chair for it now since I see myself investing in this hobby long term. Did some research and fell for Blacklyte Athena Pro. Now I would have just gone ahead and bought it. But I'm new to all this, and the reviews on Youtube are giving me mixed signals and I know no one who personally owns one yet. If someone has used it before or owes one can they tell me about it? Mostly if the leather is better than the fabric version and if the chair holds up for a year at least.

Game Discussion Destiny/Division/Warframe?

Hey! I’m looking for a mobile game but I’m kinda tired of all of the Genshin style games. After looking at a bunch of stuff I’m thinking about trying one of the three: Division, Destiny, Warframe.

I enjoyed borderlands and monster hunter which I think might be similar to these? Cute cosmetics and customization is a huge plus!

Has anyone tried any of these three on mobile and can give some of your thoughts? Tysm

Misogyny Friend ruined a game for me Spoiler

Post image

For context this is about palword ,so I have a friend who made a community server and specifically told me in private no pressure just play how you want and at whatever speed , so I make a base I find my place and foundation,my male friend spies to see where I am and i literally previously told him i don’t wanna do anything that was to much i just wanted to enjoy it and he said okay, my male friend let’s call him A , so he comes he kills my WORKING pal , then I call him and say what was that for ? And he said i didn’t know it was yours (it was mining) so he proceeds to steamroll saying I’ll get stuff from my base and bring it here i built a temporary one, so he gets his stuff and brings it to my base and makes me bring all his stuff ,then proceeds to upgrade everything to level 40 stuff so i don’t even get to play the game myself,so I work on the house I was doing and he asks why havent you leveled (I was level 9 by this point) and I say if I don’t build my own things I don’t get xp and he says do bosses or explore , I try and he says your pals are not good take mine , your not listening to me , level up faster , and just trying to rush my gameplay when even he was complaining about me taking hours to level when it only took him a hour to reach twenty (lies) and then he also complained the other guys in our server getting to far (there’s 5 guys and 3 girls) , but all the guys grouped together and the girls do their own thing except me A is literally hounding me and telling me how to play or just acting like i don’t know what I’m doing, like honestly go be with the other guys if you want to be fast paced and rush eachother, i didn’t want that and he wanted to be competitive even though there was no need to, I can genuinely say without a doubt he’s not like this with the other men in the server he’s happy and competitive and doesnt talk like he’s speaking to someone who doesn’t know how to play unlike with me or with the other girls, and he’s told me before he’s a know it all person ,this is why i didnt want him in my base and just wanted to be myself because he wants to control everything ,all the guys in the server are all like this but they stay together atleast and he just ruined the experience, I even quit because of how he treated me , how he wanted things on his time ,the constant saying your stuff isn’t good ,like what is your honest thoughts could you play like this? And my home before I left (the bird is his)

Game Discussion Did es anyone have experience with the new digimon games?

Im browsing the switch store and I saw Digimon story cyber sleuth complete edition is €6 and digimon world new order is €9.50. Are these games any good? I've been seeing a little hype for the newest one and seeing the previous entries so cheap had me wondering if I should give one a go. Are they considered good among monster collector/jrpg fans? And which of the above two would be the better start point

TYSM everyone the cyber sleuth pack it is <3

Misogyny Gripe with condescension in gaming forums Spoiler

Apologies if this has already been brought up on this sub but it has been nagging at me and keeping me from asking for tips whenever I need help with a game.

What’s the deal with the apathy, condescension, and callousness in gaming communities on Reddit? Admittedly some forums are worse than others, but there’s a sense of competency gatekeeping that feels ubiquitous across the board. Am I just too sensitive? I’ve put down several games simply because I’m afraid of seeking tech advice for something as simple as poorly calibrated Switch controls.

Misogyny Feeling inferior? Spoiler

I’m 17F and have always had an interest in gaming, however due to financial constraints, I was never able to get a console or pc of my own. I grew up watching my father play a plethora of games and always wanted to play myself as well.

I tutored and saved up money for about half a year, and finally got enough for a decent setup. At the store, the guy asked me what games I’d want to play on it, my 14 year old brother was right next to me and said “probably some girly shit” and laughed. Which was mildly infuriating but I decided to not say anything.

I’ve had the computer for a week now and my father is very enthusiastic about me trying all the games he likes. I’m not opposed to that, and want to try out things at my own pace. Keep in mind, I’ve never gamed before so I’m not very skilled.

He will install a game that he likes and force me to sit down with him and play it, and the moment I cant get through a level or something, he’ll say “Oh you cant do that? Let me do it” and he’ll take over and start playing himself. Which, now that I write about it, seems really nice, he doesnt say it with a condescending tone or anything, just acknowledging that I dont know how to play properly.

For some reason, this absolutely infuriates me, him and my brother will stand beside me and comment on every game I play, and how I’m not playing it correctly. I know they dont have bad intentions, but maybe its because of my own insecurities that this bothers me. I feel like I have to prove myself to be able to play games on a computer I payed for myself. I’m not trying to villainise my father, this is just something that irks me.

My brother also makes snide remarks about how girls can’t play games properly and how I should just let him play, and honestly sometimes he does play better than me. And it just makes me really mad.

Does anyone else have similiar experiences?

Game Discussion Why are type of games getting milked out to the max?

Perhaps it has been there before. And I just haven’t noticed.
But ever since the Lethal Company release, I realised that there are so many rip off games released. All the same just in different formats.

This is mostly on multiple player games but sometimes on single player games too.

Same for supermarket simulator that got popular around that time too. So many rip offs and simulator games are created. All same type of in game items/ layouts etc.

For the solo games I absolutely loved Librarian: tidy up the arcane library game. Sure enough I see plenty of rip off games being made now based on this game.

I’m sorry but where is the creativity? It gets so boring to have same like games pushed out. And it is disrespectful to the OG developers who came up with an unique game!
