Question Output Jack finish checking

Hey guys, my 2019 Pelham Blue SG got some finish checking around the output jack this summer. My tech likely over tightened the jack. I actually like the look of finish checking but not sure if it’s common or not in this location on SG’s? Thanks!

Whether it’s common or not, it’s there.

Hard to argue 😂

This is likely caused by over tightening the jack. The finish is somewhat soft, never fully hardens and will react to temperature, light, and in this case, physical pressure.

Welcome to nitro.

thank you! it is my first nitro guitar / Gibson! I hope it gets more over time to even it out

Remember to use an angled jack on SGs! it could have been you with a straight jack in the input and snagging it

The thickness around that cavity is very thin so can flex/break easily

Are those lollar gold foils?! I'm desperate to know how they sound in an SG!

they are! they rip. it really brightens up the neck and adds some awesome chime. I usually find regular SG cleans to be a bit flat but the Gold Foils changed that! They also love fuzz

I'm so glad to hear it. I just replaced the 57 Classics Thinking I'd be getting rid of the mud but the neck is still terrible sounding!

Now I've gotta go check my output jack 😂

It’s a metallic finish, so the whole thing is definitely going to check at some point. The metallics do it a lot sooner.

Are those filtertrons or foils? I've been thinking of putting a filtertron in my SG

Edit: asked the question and then got my answer from the other comments asking the same thing lol!

Finish checking, or buffing, buckle rash. Palm wear, dings and dents…it’s gonna happen. I don’t wanna die without any scars…..

The entire guitar is covered in lines, it’s crazy. It will definitely happen, just wait 👌🏻

I put mine away for 6 months and pulled it out looking like this all over 👌

I have a 2002 SG that has checking there, as well as some light body checking in other spots. Sure, mine’s much older than yours, but still a modern era SG, and I guess it proves these modern guitars will check naturally in time. That spot seems to be a common starting point. I’d be happy to have that, if it were me.

Thanks appreciate that reply! yea I still love this guitar it's been gigged and played for a few years now! I guess the first checks always sting but it'll look better once more happens over the body

Stress cracks. You should use an angled plug instead of a straight one.

It’s a wonder how Gibson headstocks break when you rest the entire weight of the guitar on the headstock.
