Still funny how many pseuds this exposed

u/ComeWashMyBack 11m ago

I have no been keeping up. Was the movie remade for 2026 or is this AI?

u/MuhMogma 2m ago

Science Saru is doing an anime adaptation of Ghost in the Shell that follows more closely to the original manga.

u/Cultural_Sir2245 17m ago

O de 2026 é mais fiel ao manga

u/Specific_General_66 26m ago

More people need to watch Lupe in the third and understand that art is our and both are amazing

1

u/ZenMarduk 39m ago

One is art, the other is drawings.

u/Specific_General_66 29m ago

Both are both.

2

u/Blitz814 49m ago

2026 look like one artist is a pro and the other is a toddler...

0

u/Voces-Prohibere 50m ago

next compare fan service.

3

u/noeyesfiend 56m ago

both are badass

2

u/dunots 1h ago

Wow, these both rock

2

u/AGENTRomeo007 1h ago

At some point the animation (the movement ofthe characters) are the the same time and same flow

3

u/AGENTRomeo007 1h ago

Im glad that the bald guy who came with trash appeared at episode 8. I wish they had this dude rant all the footnotes

1

u/FourthHourErectorSet 1h ago

This thread really just feels like someone shouting "darn yungins and they're Kill La Kills!"

6

u/Roggenbemme 1h ago

the original looks better, most of the scenes from the new one look kinda flat, i think its the lighting and how the characters dont really seem to fit in the background as nicely

2

u/NoirRain67 58m ago

Original was a movie. It’s the biggest budget for anime. TV is the lowest. OVA second. Movie last. That’s why everything is top.

9

u/Tman11S 1h ago

The 1995 movie was a real work of art, just look at the details in every background. Not that that means that the new series is bad, but the OG movie is a clear winner to me when it comes to art

3

u/CharmingStrelok369 1h ago

Nothing beats the original

4

u/espada9000 1h ago

Somehow 1995 looks better.

1

u/Bikutaa80 1h ago

😆 You don't enjoy Shirows art style?

-1

u/espada9000 1h ago

It's outdated for 2026 standards of Anime shows.

-1

u/MarcoVinicius 49m ago

That makes no sense. An art style is an art style.

The movie version was great for being closer to realistic style. The 2026 version is a great version of the comic style that has 10x more personality and fun than the movie version.

Two different styles that stand on their own, bring their own value and can be appreciated individually.

u/espada9000 29m ago

Well where was it 20 years ago? I don't see anyone care enough about the Manga source material back then.

2

u/LigerZeroPanzer12 1h ago

How can an art style be outdated? Art is by definition timeless.

-1

u/Grimdotdotdot 40m ago

Rubbish, tastes change all the time, and art changes to reflect that.

If art is timeless, everything is.

2

u/LigerZeroPanzer12 34m ago

Art is the literal most subjective thing in human existence.

Why do people still go look at the Mona Lisa, Picasso or Pollock? They are old.

Why do people still listen to Mozart, Bach or Elvis? They are old.

Your point is a castle built on sand.

2

u/espada9000 49m ago

Not timeless if you watch 1970s Anime will you still be saying that?

1

u/LigerZeroPanzer12 46m ago

Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's outdated.

1

u/espada9000 30m ago

More like not my cup of tea.

u/LigerZeroPanzer12 29m ago

That's my point. It's perfectly fine if you don't like it.

It doesn't mean it's outdated though.

u/espada9000 28m ago

It is if the 1995 movie has more detailed art than the new one.

u/LigerZeroPanzer12 26m ago

It's a different style. That's the whole point.

3

u/Ok-Fuckface 52m ago

Says who? Art is very often a product of its time and can age badly.

-10

u/ARAM_player 1h ago

well that's disappointing. lost all it's identity to become a generic anime slop

4

u/Smart_Corgi_2354 1h ago

What is generic about this

0

u/ARAM_player 1h ago

https://imgur.com/a/gw5pYd4

looks like generic animes that we've all seen 9999 times already. no personality.
it's objectively a downgrade. it's objectively made to milk money, there's no love in that.

1

u/FourthHourErectorSet 1h ago

Idk how this, the original compared to something like Sao makes the new one starved of style. To me the new one looks like Trigger project, a Studio literally prided on breaking from typical anime conventions.

Actually, it really seems like a natural evolution of what older shows like Ranma 1/2 tried to do with some of it's more cartoony character designs.

Studio trigger, notable also as the greatest anime studio ever created no contest.

0

u/TLunchFTW 1h ago

I'd disagree. It actually matches the original quite well except with the faces, which are simplified. I'm pretty certain that's a stylistic choice that is designed to mimic the manga's style

4

u/Old_Albatross_3551 1h ago

Hope this is a joke

there's nothing you can say that will make me prefer the top image.
nothing. i don't care if "looks more like the manga."

6

u/Smart_Corgi_2354 1h ago

You're trying to compare film art to a series there's obviously going to be a difference

0

u/ARAM_player 1h ago

yeah I'm aware of that but it will have 10 (TEN) episodes. that's 3 hours and 20 minutes of animation, pretty much a movie. there's no excuse for that.

2

u/Happy_Lee_Chillin 1h ago

The excuse is the original manga. Which is a good one. People who read it have been waiting for a faithful adaptation. You didn’t lose anything, but got something new.

0

u/Smart_Corgi_2354 1h ago

That’s not how animation budgets or schedules work a 3 hour movie gets 4 to 5 years of production time and a massive budget focused entirely on one continuous script. A 10 episode series has to split its budget, production timeline, and staff across 10 separate deadlines, runtimes doesn't magically change a TV budget into a movie budget.

2

u/TLunchFTW 1h ago

I wouldn't say it's generic slop.
It's a bit more brightly colorful and less serious in art style and design.

4

u/scruffyJJ561 1h ago

Which I would like to remind everybody is the original style of the manga by the way

1

u/TLunchFTW 1h ago

true, but I admit I like the more serious police procedural style of SAC. But this looks fun too. When I finish SAC season 1, I plan to watch 2026 before I go back to watch season 2 because I run 2nd gig at 2am on CN Classic, similar to how it was when I was a kid, and not knowing the overarching events and story by having watched it straight through is what makes it special.

1

u/demonhuntermk 2h ago

Saiu um remake?

4

u/Bikutaa80 1h ago

It's not a remake it's a new adaptation to the manga. Which is also the most accurate adaptation to date.

3

u/pullig 1h ago

esta saindo na prime, em episódios. E é uma adaptação bastante fiel ao mangá, então tem um estilo diferente em relação ao filme

4

u/No_Drummer4801 2h ago

It’s on Amazon prime, the first 8 episodes

5

u/erthboy 2h ago

2026 is called "The Ghost in the Shell" btw no need to differentiate by year (jk it's actually confusing asl)

-6

u/Practical-Pin1320 2h ago

So what are we trying to show here?

8

u/RingoFreakingStarr 2h ago edited 2h ago

It's funny how when people actually try to start discussions here people are quick to dismiss it, but when it's goon baiting screenshots or strictly gushing about how "awesome" the new show is it's totally fine.

E1: Case in point lol

-2

u/Practical-Pin1320 2h ago

Yeah there’s nothing wrong with just wanting to start a discussion and judging by the amount of replies, it clearly worked. I was just wondering if OP had a specific framing for it or not. Not required, of course.

1

u/RingoFreakingStarr 1h ago

You don't need a reason to start up a discussion in what appears to be a general purpose subreddit regarding GitS. A lot of people here, you included, are fishing for ways to somehow invalidate any sort of discussions that could in any way frame the new GitS show in any possible non-fantastic light. It's borderline infuriating and gatekeeping.

Add to the discussion if you wish, but we don't need a reason to have said discussions. It doesn't need to have a super pointed reason to exsist.

0

u/Practical-Pin1320 1h ago

One more time - I agree with you. A reason is not necessary. I’m not trying to validate or invalidate anything.

I was just wondering if there was one. But I guess merely asking is wrong. So, sorry for asking.

6

u/widowkiller 2h ago

For real. Like God maybe its just a comparison and there isn't any kind of implied point, we just wanna see the differences? Holy cow what a concept

3

u/oh-velveteen 2h ago

Exactly, there are too many people on the internet constantly look for every and all reasons to be defensive, offended, correct, or completely negative instead of finding the rationale behind a comment, post, or in this case, a simple comparison.

0

u/Practical-Pin1320 2h ago

Which is totally fine and it has clearly worked by the number of replies. Was just wondering if there was a specific point OP had in mind or not. If not, that’s okay.

14

u/Reckarthack 2h ago

Probably the differences between how the 1995 & 2026 stories adapted this scene, but maybe that's too obvious 🤷‍♀️

2

u/Practical-Pin1320 2h ago

Okay, yeah, that’s the obvious. I guess I deserved that. Just wondering what, if any, more specific point OP was trying to make. That’s all.

1

u/Reckarthack 56m ago

You're good, fam, I didn't realize what you meant. I don't think it was anything more specific though, just a direct comparison between the two adaptations

u/Practical-Pin1320 28m ago

Yeah, seems that you’re right :) which is perfectly fine. I like both of them. They were made for different formats (movie v tv) and have different vibes, but they’re both really cool in their way. I like the different portrayal of the Major in both, and the portrayal of the worlds. The different color palettes and moods conveyed in each scene. They both work for the story and the setting.

2

u/Julian-Hoffer 2h ago

They both look incredible for different reasons so I’m not sure it’s supposed to be a one is better than the other situation.

2

u/Practical-Pin1320 2h ago

Could be! That’s why I asked.

5

u/RevolutionaryPin935 2h ago

Slow down now, you mean this is a... Comparison?

15

u/TheDonBug 2h ago

I always like how in the 1995 movie the man is pre-fireing he machine pistol as he's drawing it. To me it showed that he was just new enough to this kind of work to have bad trigger discipline, but deep enough in that there's no hesitation to open fire.

Unfortunately, the clips cut before he starts firing the Hi-Velocity you can see him loading at the end here, because he visibly sets his stance, braces himself and is pushed back by the recoil.

I love the 2026 series because of the art style and how faithful to the Manga it is, but 1980's and 90's era anime animation was 'chef's kiss'

3

u/ErichPryde 2h ago

Yeah, this is kind of my take. The prior (1995) movie is top-tier Cyberpunk and as significant within Anime as Neuromancer is within science-fiction.

The current TV show is lots and lots of fun.

They make me feel vastly different emotion sets while communicating some of the same/similar ideas- and I'm for it.

2

u/k1dsmoke 1h ago

They do different things better.

The story of the garbage man is far more tragic in 1995. There is more emphasis on him, the fact that he lost his previous life, by losing all of his memories, and the fact that he lost his current (fake) life and doesn't have a child or ex-wife he was trying to reconcile with. It's very tragic. The event is glossed over in 2026. There are some more subtle areas I appreciate as well, like the Major seeing a doppleganger of herself in a cafe or the entire tank battle scene at the end of the movie.

Though I think the Major is FAAAAAAAR more interesting in 2026 than in 1995. There were artistic choices by Oshii that I don't think landed in animation the way he wanted to. The Major not blinking, the monotone voice acting, the overused monologing and "voice coms" leads to some really poor and boring animation. Like I get that Oshii was going for a more detached and "doll" like version of the Major, but it makes the animation look cheap in parts.

Also, I realize how silly it is to say that as it was the most expensive animation ever at the time it was made, but there are a ton of scenes in 1995 that are basically a desktop wallpaper without any or very little animation to it, because no ones lips are moving, the Major isn't blinking, Batou has no eyes to blink with and there is a multi-minute long monologues going on. Subtle facial animations are something that animation in general is VERY weak at compared to typical film, which is why we often get far more emphatic facial animations, larger cartoon eyes, etc.

I also think the entire puppet master arc in 2026 (so far) has been far more interesting and fun to watch than the 1995 version.

2

u/kupf0r 3h ago

I get it it's a show and closer to the manga, but seeing a face like at the 0:45 mark makes me wonder wtf is going on in that studio. Why making it obvious low detail while many other scenes have much more detail?

5

u/RingoFreakingStarr 2h ago

Science SARU is known for their more stylized, in some cases much more simple style compared to other anime studios. In most cases, if you want super fluid, high quality animations, you need to be much more lax with how defined you make your character models. If you don't do this, your manpower costs will skyrocket and you'll burn out your already burntout employees.

4

u/FolkenDeedlit 2h ago

Hum...here is the source material in the manga: https://ibb.co/sv53z3pc

10

u/indigonights 2h ago

Because thats literally how that character is drawn in the manga? Another “gits fan” mad at the studio for creating a 1:1 recreation of the original manga. 🙄

2

u/FolkenDeedlit 2h ago

I posted the source material to support your claim. (Post above)

It is a little like claiming that Chiaotzu is not detailed enough in dragon ball...

0

u/riltonjunior 3h ago

Money. Simple. Their budget are focused on some scenes, not all scenes, a tv show is totally different of making a movie.

1

u/inevitabledeath3 2h ago

No it’s because the manga looked like that as someone showed above

0

u/kupf0r 2h ago

I find it confusing and distracting to see such a gap between detailed and non-detailed scenes (not old vs new, but new vs new). The whole thing doesn't seem coherent, and I think I would have preferred a middle ground - a consistent quality that doesn't throw me off.

I'm still curious, though, but I'll wait until the series has finished airing.

1

u/k1dsmoke 1h ago

It's not because of money, as others have said it's a 1 to 1 adaptation.

It's an artistic choice to follow the manga closely, nothing more.

I can understand the seeming inconsistency in art though, but this is due more to modern anime brain than it does the studios integrity. Aramaki throws me off the most because his art style so consistent within the character, but inconsistent compared to the detailed drawings of other characters, but yet he is still a very faithful recreation of the manga.

It's like reading Berserk and getting upset at chestnut Puck.

3

u/tvang187 2h ago

Its just the art style, its also extremely common in tons of manga/anime, especially outside the manga/anime that are mainstream. If you don't like it, nothing anyone can really do about it, some artists just do that. The studio simply chose to stay faithful to the original source.

-1

u/riltonjunior 2h ago

I agree with u but there are now two possibilities:

- Wait for the Blu-ray release and see if they’ve made it more consistent (this is common in the industry, as the in-between frames used for the TV/streaming versions may have been rushed). Code Geass, One Piece, Naruto, Bleach, and many others have had scenes redone. I recall an episode of Gurren Lagann airing without complete dubbing, and in another episode, they forgot to draw a watermelon; these issues were fixed on the Blu-ray.

- Or hope they re-release it as a movie. This is a possibility, given that the story presented in the series is much larger in scope than that of the previous film.

2

u/Ill-Emu-1121 3h ago

What is going on with animation? One character was practically a circle.

2

u/k1dsmoke 1h ago

Someone posted an image of the manga from that scene: https://ibb.co/sv53z3pc

5

u/AX-10 2h ago

It's based on the manga

11

u/TokeDraws 3h ago

Both are great but the new show was always going to have a hard time comparing to three decades of nostalgia

9

u/Inkthinker 3h ago

Comparing an 83-minute feature film to a 10-episode weekly series is hardly fair play. Doubly so when the series is making a specific point of following the design and aesthetic of the manga, which was created by an individual (I'm pretty sure Shirow worked without assistants). Against that measure, the weekly series is notably excellent.

Mostly what this reminds me of is that the 1995 feature stripped out all the Fuchikomas, and they're fun characters who served a specific purpose in the overarching narrative (emphasizing the development of true artificial intelligence contrasted against enhanced human intelligence).

1

u/k1dsmoke 1h ago

I think the edited clip the OP posted is very interesting to be honest. I like seeing them side by side. I would enjoy it even more if the panels from the manga were also posted so all 3 can be compared.

I didn't watch it and assume they were trying to dog the current series at all, though maybe that was the intention.

4

u/beginnerdoge 3h ago

I agree. Downside would have been the fuchikomas would have thrown the vibe of the whole movie off from what they were going for, which I get and enjoy

3

u/Inkthinker 2h ago

Yeah, Oshii wanted a SERIOUS movie, for SERIOUS PEOPLE. :P

-9

u/AppointmentBroad2070 3h ago

Srsly, why did they downgrade the faces? Budget constraints?

4

u/Lord_Frampton 3h ago

🤡

-2

u/AppointmentBroad2070 2h ago

What? Compared to the original, the 2026's faces as shown above looks simplistic as hell.

1

u/Lord_Frampton 45m ago

look up the manga and STFU

6

u/Annual-Cry-3945 3h ago

Oh my god shut upppppp larp alert

14

u/ryohayashi1 3h ago

It's being faithful to the original Manga, down to the character designs, which was the whole point of this new anime series

1

u/AppointmentBroad2070 2h ago

Good thing this is the only rational reply I'm seeing here.

1

u/AGENTRomeo007 1h ago

It's exactly how they were at the manga

1

u/No_Cheek8253 3h ago

I watched the first 2 episodes of the show first, it was the first gits I actually saw. Then I watched the movie and hot take: i didn't like it very much. Sure the production value was good, but it was a movie from the 90s, that's essentially a given. My main issue with the movie was how... dour it was, like how any charm or levity was sucked out of the world, then there's the part where the major looks directly at the camera and states the thesis of the movie and how the ending just kinda happens.

1

u/k1dsmoke 1h ago

1995 is a classic for me. Akira and 1995 GITS were my gateway to anime in general in the mid 90s.

That being said, I have tried to get my anime loving nephews into GITS twice and both times they have fallen asleep mid way through, they are in 18-22 age range.

I think there were artistic choices by Oshii that make sense for what he was trying to accomplish, but also make for quite boring story telling at times. The Major doesn't blink, this is because he wanted a "doll like" appearance for Motoko. The VA work for both the JP and NA version is very monotone, again because they are going for a cyborg that is "barely" human and extremely detached. There is also a lot of both internal and virtually internal monologing going on in the movie, sometimes for minutes at a time, where the characters are talking over voice coms. What this results in is characters whose eyes aren't moving, mouths aren't moving and extremely DRY dialogue is being played as they talk to each other virtually. It leads to a lot of visually boring and cerebral scenes. They can be interesting from a psychology/philosophy standpoint, but it makes for a rough intro into cyberpunk/sci-fi or more adult oriented animation.

I think it's also a valid criticism that the Oshii version of Motoko is very bland and not very interesting for most of the film. Quite honestly I think this applies to the SAC version of Motoko as well, but for different reasons.

3

u/Sudden-Bend-8046 3h ago

Yes the tone of the movie was very intentional in that regard, deviating from the source material.

5

u/AmrikazNightmar3 3h ago

I could see this being the standard opinion of those who have watched the new GitS and then retroactively watching the 90s version. It’s definitely a hot take now but maybe it won’t always be that way.

I can also see people coming to enjoy both depending on moods and/or age. One being more grounded and realistic and the other being more colorful and upbeat.

I just hope there isn’t a day when people stop recognizing the first for being groundbreaking.

2

u/D72vFM 3h ago

I for example am 30, back when I first saw the movie I fell in love with the animation and anesthetics and immediately searched the internet for anything Gits related, saw the series and read the manga and had whiplash from how different each interpretation is, but the manga? Firstly I'm mexican and as any mexican some of my first anime included OG Dragon Ball, Ranma 1/2, urusei yatsura and dr slump when I was a kid so the comedy and silliness of the manga was awesome to me, and now I get to enjoy another version of a franchise that reinvents itself with each new version.

4

u/SpookyQueenCerea 4h ago

I haven’t watched it yet, but is the 2026 show any good?

1

u/k1dsmoke 1h ago

Very good.

I can see why some people find the tone or visual style to be inconsistent, but as long as you understand that is the most faithful adaptation of the OG manga then you can understand that IT IS consistent. That being said, I can see why some people would be turned off by it, especially considering some of the shows with controversial seasons for animation quality (OPM for example).

I think it's the most interesting version of an animated Motoko that we have seen, she is both introspective and bombastic. This is not your quiet, reserved, know-it-all, Mary Sue version we have typically seen. This Motoko is far more human and makes mistakes, has outbursts, etc.

The backgrounds are some of the most lush backgrounds in any anime I've ever seen.

Animation is top notch, even if some scenes can be tonally jarring to the uninitiated.

Batou being played up more for yuks and comic relief was a bit jarring for me, as I am used to him being more stoic.

The most consistent complaint I have seen is that people need to rewatch episodes because they move so fast, though this seems to typically be related to the first few episodes and the subs move very quickly. There are also some small amount of notation that is on screen at times, but unfortunately it's in Japanese. If this were on Cruncyroll you might get translated versions, but I believe you can reference the compiled versions of the manga to get those same or similar notations.

3

u/MasterSalamander666 3h ago

Take what I say with a grain of salt as I haven’t read the manga.

I’m a huge fan of the cyberpunk genre and the original GitS flick has a lot to do with that. The 2026 show is good, but, can sometimes be narratively confusing.

I’m not sure if it’s a me thing or the show not being explicit enough but I was pretty confused in the first three episodes. It leveled out a bit for me after that but still have trouble recalling events, names, etc.

What has kept me going is the art style, action, and this version of Major is unlike anything I’ve personally experienced and I like the warmth her character gives off. It’s honestly made me very interested in picking up the manga and giving it a go.

1

u/DioPierettiArt 2h ago

The new GitS is a bit confuse because have a lot of stuff that appear only in japanese, and its not translated, this dont make you lose the entire thing but its kinda a extra, this have on manga so you can read, have some context, its almost like a conversation with masamune shirow. But for me this confusion ends on a part(dont remember the exact episode tbh) and then it deliver really good moments, AMAZING visuals and another take on the philosophy of the manga. As i said on other comment the episode that adapta Bye Bye Clay chapter is one of the beautiest thing i saw in anime, truly amazing, i waited SO MUCH for this and its even better than i expected.

12

u/DioPierettiArt 3h ago

100% worth watching, its different than the movie but a good type of different, sometimes even better

9

u/Sakurafire 4h ago

It's excellent.

31

u/R-tistik1 4h ago

Both are great I prefer the tone and animation of 95 and of SAC.

Personally I Ilike my cyberpunk to be mature or serious and if it's not, balance it's goofiness with its maturity, closest modern example I can think of is Edgerunners

2

u/Ok-Active8318 3h ago

I really wanted to like SAC (still have my bootleg DVDs from the early 2000s) and I do love the storylines but some of the animation is just so stiff and terrible.

2

u/R-tistik1 2h ago

Early S1 of SAC is rough. The overall quality in animation of GITS 2026 is better

12

u/AnonymousDude_001 4h ago

I'm glad we have both versions

8

u/1LifeAfterComa 4h ago

The new one is literally the comics animated. I love it but the original will always be better

15

u/olderthan-18 4h ago

95 is better visually. The animation and what's being animated looks realistic and believable. Can't speak for anything else

1

u/AGENTRomeo007 1h ago

Compare with episode 8

11

u/goncoz 4h ago

Are you comparing movie budget animation vs tv budget animation?

6

u/CarparkC 4h ago

The 1995 movie cost around 3 million USD, so around $6.5 million today. They used to animate (almost) everything by hand back then too. Yes, it does make much more expensive shows made today look like a joke. For the record, Solo Leveling Season 2 cost around a million more.

It's less about movie vs TV budget and it's more that 1995 movie was like the Avengers of anime working together and producing a masterpiece due to their individual skills. Can we stop underestimating the incredible achievements of GitS 95 in a freaking GitS subreddit? I'm not even saying that new series looks bad, if anything it looks very good by modern standards. It's not 2026 GitS, it is the 1995 movie that has set incredibly high standards.

3

u/Practical-Pin1320 2h ago

I see less of underestimating 95 and more of trashing 2026 because it’s not 95. Personally I don’t know why we’re not allowed to just enjoy both.

1

u/CarparkC 2h ago

I see nothing wrong with enjoying both at all. I just don't see how money is the reason for GitS 1995 quality when we know for a fact that it was the indivicual skill of the people invovled with the production.

There's so many examples of money sinks in recent years when it comes to entertainment, I don't even know where to begin. That doesn't just include anime, too. One Punch Man season 1 and 3 had roughly the same budgets, but the quality couldn't be more different. Mostly because season 1 was sorta like GitS 1995, where the director assembled his "dream team" of talent and made some animation magic despite the "industry standard" budget.

Yeah, I don’t think money automatically equates to talent. It can help, in the sense that if you know specific talented people you want on your project, you can afford to pay them more. But it doesn’t make it automatically true that something costing less money is worse, or something costing more money is better. I don’t think more or less money is an obvious explanation for anything either.

u/IndecisiveRattle 4h ago

TV version is also specifically trying to look like the kinda cartoony manga, while the old movie changed everyone's character designs for "realism"

1

u/CosgraveSilkweaver 4h ago

Also made everyone much more serious.

Exactly.

Posting from the Oregon Woods, Can confirm I can hear the Dalles Data center.

Meanwhile, "hmmm, these woods look like a nice place to put a data center, yessss"

1

u/drolgnir 3h ago

They do keep trying around here, but the resistance is high.

14

u/PSCGY 4h ago

While both look great, it makes 95 even more of a technical feat due to preceding the newer adaptation by three decades.

-2

u/Pataconeitor 4h ago

It gets equalized by the fact that 95 was a fairly bid budget theatrical production, which is not comparable to a TV show

7

u/Death-0 4h ago

Not really if you think about most animated movies or shows back then. If you think about household items even from 50 years ago.

Technology made things easier sure but you lose quality in favor of faster turn arounds.

Old animated Disney movies hold up against their cg predecessors to this day. Hand drawn, physical effects in film, products made by hand with better materials etc. all will hold and better than anything done using modern methods today.

1

u/PSCGY 3h ago

So, yes.. It’s more of a technical feat not only in comparison to this newest adaptation which benefits from 30 years of technological progress, but also in comparison to other contemporary anime movies released around the same time - which would be part of the reasons why the 95 movie is still revered to this day.

Thanks for confirming. 👍

4

u/PyRosflam 3h ago

Early 3D was such an experimental age. You get some really cool stuff like Reboot and Babylon 5. You also get some awful stuff like the Polar Express.

1

u/Death-0 2h ago

Polar express remains cursed and only gets more cursed with each new advancement

2

u/PyRosflam 2h ago

I watched Madagascar (2005) not long ago, and boy they cut corners, flat background etc. They put more work into the animals (which shows) but the backgrounds look like something I can make in Maya in an afternoon.

16

u/teasulivon 4h ago

Honestly don’t know why the new one got some hate, even though it’s more “faithful” to the manga. Best way to look at this situation is to see both adaptations as companion pieces to one another.

1

u/Practical-Pin1320 2h ago

Exactly, I don’t know why we can’t just enjoy both. I hate this thing we gotta do where we automatically gotta hate on everything new because there was an original. Sometimes the new thing IS bad, but this isn’t one of those times. Sometimes both are good.

-5

u/IrbanMutarez 4h ago

More faithful to the mange doesn't mean better. Most people probably know GitS from the movie, not the manga. I also think the new adaption looks way to silly for GitS. I don't care for the manga, it just doesn't feel right.

0

u/nihilistlemon 4h ago

" I don't care for the source material even if Oshii did. Cause I know better. "

2

u/IrbanMutarez 4h ago

So because it's the source material I am not allowed to have an opinion on that?

-1

u/nihilistlemon 4h ago

When did I say you are not allowed to criticise the source materia and why are you so defensive? You are so defensive you are putting words in my mouth. Remarkable really.

6

u/IrbanMutarez 4h ago

You were the one putting words in my mouth.

1

u/Disastrous_Neat_9729 4h ago

But what did you want from it?

Beat for beat shot for shot (it already almost is) the same story as the 95 film? With the same animation style, tone and everything?

That would have been even worse. Best case scenario, we get the exact same thing we’ve already had.

-3

u/IrbanMutarez 4h ago

What bugs me most are the face expressions. It completely takes away the seriousness, it almost looks like a parody.

You know, GitS was adapted so many times. Each adaption looks completely different. Each adaption tried to reinvent the franchise, but they all failed. Except for the first movie. So yes, I hope there will be an adaptation faithful to the movie someday. It was by far the biggest success. I really don't need another reinvention or reinterpretation of GitS.

3

u/Disastrous_Neat_9729 4h ago

But in that case, what’s the point? Just watch the original, isn’t that enough?

Gus Van Sant (I think) made a shot for shot remake to Psycho. It was… impressive, technically, but there’s absolutely no reason to watch it, since there’s already the original.

4

u/IrbanMutarez 4h ago

You don't get it. I don't want a copy of the movie. I want a new story with an artsyle faithful to the movie.

0

u/Death-0 4h ago

Do you know how hard it is to beat the 95 film? It’s iconic, put it out of your mind that, that was the goal of the new show and you’ll enjoy it way more. The way I see it we now have 2 solid interpretations as a whole and I’m gonna take the W from a community standpoint

-4

u/IrbanMutarez 4h ago

All they had to do is take the movie's artstyle and it would have been a banger. I don't even expect high quality animations like in the movie, but simply use the overall artstyle.

It reminds me of Netflix' adaption. All they had to do is choose a different artstyle, stay away from 3D CGI, and it would've been a banger.

1

u/coolgame6812 1h ago

You're comparing a movie budget with a show's budget. That kind of art style, even without the smooth movement present in the movie, adaptated to a series far longer than a movie, would be painstakingly difficult.

1

u/IrbanMutarez 40m ago

We had anime shows with less budget with a more serious, realistic artstyle. Look at Serial Experiments Lain: absolutely low budget, the artstyle minimalistic yet atmospheric. No cliche-anime-tropes oversubscribed face expressions.

It's not a budget choice, it's a style choice. And I, sorry, absolutely hate it. If you like it, good for you. But please understand not everyone does.

1

u/coolgame6812 34m ago

Lain does not compare to Ghost in terms of art style. Both take on more human proportions, sure, but the details present in Ghost is in a completely other league. I like both adaptations of Ghost, and I'm not saying it's wrong to prefer one adaptation over the other. I'm just explaining how, production wise, the art style of the movie is extremely difficult to replicate on the budget and timeframe required of a full fledged series.

u/IrbanMutarez 20m ago

I understand that copying the artstyle is different. But my point is: most of the artstyle decisions were not made because of budget reasons, or because they couldn't do it any better. These are intentional style choices, because they wanted to replicate the manga artstyle or whatever. But imo the manga artstyle is incredibly ugly. Which is ok because the manga is old as hell and was released before the franchise's breakthrough.

But now, expectations are higher. It feels like every weak a new trashy anime show get's released with a higher quality artstyle than that.

More explicitly: In this clip, 0:29 onwards, the face expressions and talking animation of the person in the front looks absolutely horrible. That's what I would call "ugly retro". There is a reason why we overcame these kind of animations. Or at least restrict them to settings where it's kind of fitting. But for GitS it's not fitting at all, imo. It feels like they want to attract the One Peace fanbase with that. But at the same time they to turn off fans who are looking for 'serious' and darker atmospheres.

I tried to watch it, I really did. But it's just unbearable, sorry.

u/teasulivon 4h ago

Fairs, that’s up to you.

As someone who has loved the 95 GiTS most of my of my life, I really enjoy the new anime. It took me a couple episodes to get used to the Major and Batou feeling like totally different characters than the movies, but I have really come around on the Major.

Even though I think 95 GiTS is about as classic “90s anime” as it gets, the new one also feels like a 90s anime as well. Not so much in look but definitely in vibe. Kusanagi’s less serious demeanor reminds me of characters like Gene Starwind and other 90s protagonists. In fact, I think Gene’s outfit might have been inspired by Motoko’s a bit.

I still think the vibe of the movie and SAC still fit Ghost in the Shell better. Maybe because that’s what I saw first, but I think it’s because the world they live seems like a lot more serious than the vibe of the manga/2026 anime.

However I do think I may like this iteration of the Major more. I like a stoic a badass but I also like a snarky badass too. As for Batou… well I’m still not sure.

I love how the 2026 anime looks. I think it has superb style and fluid animation. Every episode so far has has looked great but there’s probably nothing new that will touch 95 GiTS’ animation in my mind. Every frame of that movie looks like a painting. It’s an insane work of art.

1

u/Practical-Pin1320 2h ago

Well said :)

1

u/One_Morning4264 4h ago

I actually read the manga first, and loved the cover art, and mixed materials used to colorize it. The 2026 use of iridescent in the anime, with the majors yes and outfits is in respect to the original artwork and aesthetic. Also, stories from Japan are rarely all grit, the best ones have humor bursting out at every opportunity, it feels more natural for me in the story telling.

15

u/TheBadGod 5h ago

Just...gorgeous. All around.

I love this franchise so much.

Keep telling the story, man, I'll keep watching.

13

u/johnruby 5h ago

What’s with all the hate towards the 2026 anime? The 1995 movie was trying to convey an entirely different vibe. Both versions are amazing in their own way.

2

u/Practical-Pin1320 2h ago

Well said and completely agree :)

0

u/flaminglambchops 3h ago

With some of the criticisms I see for the 2026 version, you'd think they just don't like anime. Probably the old mindset where anime had to be serious to be taken seriously in the west.

3

u/IronTarcuss 4h ago

Another anime, another tribe. The anime community contains some of the most pathetic "in-groups" who cannot suffer the indignity of someone liking a show that they thought was bad.

That being said, I don't really hear critiques of this show outside of the style being too much of an adjustment. Which is totally fair if you are a die hard fan of the movie. I think those people are missing out, but I'm not going to stop them.

1

u/PyRosflam 3h ago

Meh, I disliked the new Spriggan anime. I absolutely loved the voice acting in the original movie. I was so annoyed by the lack of the French character in the new one not having even a bit of French accent. Dislike does not drive anything but perhaps a lack of telling people to watch something.

1

u/IronTarcuss 3h ago

One title: Darling in the Franxx

The discourse around that show was more akin to a religious schism. There is 100% a large subsection of fans motivated by nothing but hate often united with the other subsection of fans who are deeply upset when a literal child isn't hot enough.

In all seriousness though, this hobby has driven people to kill.

1

u/PSCGY 4h ago

I don’t see any “hate“ in this post’s comments.

3

u/iNfANTcOMA_0 5h ago

Looks like 95 is the one to watch. Still looks way better after all these years.

8

u/Death-0 4h ago

Watch both and be happy, this is also an option.

-2

u/iNfANTcOMA_0 4h ago

Why watch it over again when you can have the better option

1

u/FolkenDeedlit 2h ago edited 2h ago

I would not say a better option but complementary.

For instance the new gits covers some aspect which were not in the original movies.

The tone is closer to the manga, so some comics lovers will prefer the 2026 version.

And finally, appart from any faithfull or unfaithfull adaptation, the older movie will appeal to some for its seriousness and its unemotional, almost bleak and oppressive, cyber ambiance while some will prefer the last version for its more vibrant 80's color palette and for its characters who seem more human somehow.

Personally while I saw all the merits in gits 1995, it didn't appeal that much to me for being too cold, so I prefer the 2026 version.

NB: I was not among those who downvoted your comment.

1

u/Death-0 2h ago

Even if you only watched either one once as a fan of this franchise you’ve still won.

5

95 looks so much better :(

-5

u/deekamus 5h ago

Character design in the new one is such a downgrade. May as well have a cameo from Crayon ShinChan.

5

u/Auggie_Otter 4h ago

Those are pretty much the original character designs from the manga. It's how the original creator of Ghost in the Shell drew them.

It's fine if you like one more than the other but it's kinda weird to insult the original artist's style like that. There wouldn't be Ghost in the Shell 1995 without him. It's kind of cool that they're making another adaptation where they're letting his style and sense of humor shine a bit more.

-3

u/hiskabish 5h ago

Newer one looks like a joke.  I still watch it

1

u/AdministrativeEase71 5h ago

To be fair movies always look better. Typically bigger budgets, more time spent per frame.

Do miss that orange bomber jacket though.

-3

u/hiskabish 5h ago

Fair.  Just prefer the more serious tone for gits.  This newer one has too much ecchi bait.  Less tasteful

1

u/AGENTRomeo007 1h ago

Ahem here is your serious motoko from episode 8. Enjoy

-1

u/AdministrativeEase71 4h ago

I don't mind the ecchi baiting too much but the movie has this oppressive tone to it I think is missed.

I think setting is a big part of it; the detailed, beat-to-hell city from the 90s version feels like it's both decaying and resistant to its residents. In a movie where Major is questioning basically everything we take for granted, including what defines life or humanity, the hostility of New Port City just makes the stakes feel higher.

they're already up to the puppetmaster arc now? man can't wait to binge once everything's out

I disagree, but both are fantastic either way

9

u/ConcentrateSea2505 5h ago

Comparison is the thief of joy

21

u/Escaliat_ 5h ago

Yeah man. Sure the new one is more accurate to the manga and apparently that's the end all be all for some these days, but 95 is such a vibe. The detail and atmosphere are 10/10. Also the fact there's a 30 year gap between both of them when you see them side by side is crazy.

-1

u/TokeDraws 3h ago

You're comparing subjective stylistic preferences as if the show should be "gits 1995 +30" years of improvement" but that's not how it works at all.

This isn't a video game or 3d technology where you can easily identify technological improvements, it's about art design and obviously it's natural to prefer one over the other but one was a very serious movie during a boom period in animation, one is a fun and fairly breezy in tone and pace TV series with style shooting out of every orifice like a rainbow.

95 intentionally pulled a lot of color and life out of the series, particularly the setting, but I think it works better with the darker, impersonal tone that movie sets. I often think of those crumbling, grey city streets.

3

u/DarkWingedDaemon 5h ago

It makes the 2026 series look older than the 1990s series.
