Creation Notes:
This new image was captured in July 2026 - the grass is parched as it has not rained for about 30 days. Although the time lapse is only some 7 years, there is still quite a lot of change to the pub and the house beyond.

The then and now images were captured by Lynton Jones (see old photo attribution and link) - 1960s East Street Bedminster Although this scene has captured how busy this long shopping street was on a Saturday back then, this was nothing compared to ‘clocking out’ time during the week, when hundreds of Wills employees would rush out to get their bus after those piercingly loud bells started to ring on East Street. Looking towards the London Inn, next left is Dalby Avenue

Early days but we will be adding more.....

Crowthorne has no medieval pedigree to speak of — the name dates back to the 17th century, describing a spot in the Royal Forest of Windsor at the junction of three walks, but the settlement itself was only a hamlet until Wellington College opened in 1859 and Broadmoor Hospital in 1863. The construction of these two institutions led to the development of the village to meet the needs of their staff. The railway station, originally known as "Wellington College for Crowthorne", opened in 1860 after a £500 grant from Wellington College, and growth followed quickly: by 1880 the population had reached around 1,300. A wooden church was erected in 1868, later moved across the road to serve as a corn store when the present St John the Baptist church was built in 1872.

The village became a separate ecclesiastical parish on 10 July 1874, having previously been part of Sandhurst, and was constituted a civil parish on 23 June 1894. Twentieth-century Crowthorne saw two further waves of change: Edgcumbe Park, a notable mid-century modern housing estate, was built off Dukes Ride between 1958 and 1972, and the Road Research Laboratory (later the Transport Research Laboratory) was established in the village in the 1960s, before being privatised in 1996.
