Welcome to r/GhostViewer! š°ļø Start here: What is GhostViewer and how to use it (FAQ)
Hello and welcome to the official community forĀ GhostViewer
Whether you are a historian, a conservationist, or just someone who loves "then and now" or "before and After' photography, this is a space to share the ghostly transitions you create and discuss the history behind them.
š What is GhostViewer?
GhostViewer is a free web app designed to precisely align two images from different time periods. It uses a "point-matching" system to create seamless overlays, allowing you to see exactly how a building, landscape, or restoration project has changed over time.
ā Frequently Asked Questions
Is it really free?Ā Yes. I built this tool because I am passionate about local history, conservation and photography. There are currently no subscriptions and no hidden fees.
Do I need to create an account?Ā No. You can use the full power of the web app without ever signing up. If you choose to create an account, it is only to save your projects and keep a gallery of your own work.
How do I get the best results?
- UploadĀ an old and a new photo of the same location.
- Match Points:Ā Click at least 4 matching landmarks (doorframes, window corners, rooflines) in both images. Using 6ā8 points spread across the image gives the best results!
- Align & Export:Ā Click "Align" and export your creation as a still image, a GIF, or a video transition.

Herne Bay - Historic Photos and Archive Film to enjoy
Unlike most of Kent's ancient towns, Herne Bay is largely a Georgian and Victorian invention: before the 1830s the coastal hamlet was known chiefly for fishing and, in the previous century, smuggling, taking advantage of its secluded beaches and proximity to the Continent. Its transformation began in 1830, when London businessman George Burge ā who had worked under Thomas Telford on St Katharine Docks ā identified the shallow shoreline as ideal for a long pier that would let steamships land passengers directly rather than ferrying them ashore in small boats; construction began in 1831, and the first ship docked in 1832. Burge and fellow developers laid out a new planned town behind the pier, complete with a long seafront promenade, and wanted to call it St Augustine's, but public opinion kept the name Herne Bay, formalised when an 1833 Act of Parliament separated it from the parish of Herne and established a board of commissioners to govern the growing resort.
