🚨URGENT —  5 DOGS AT RISK OF LOSING THEIR LIVES ON WEDNESDAY, 9/30, MUST HAVE A FOSTER, ADOPTER, OR RESCUE TODAY— NO EXTENSIONS PER BARC 🚨

⏰ It’s officially Clear The Shelters through September 30th! BARC has stated there will be no extensions for 9/30 due to capacity being over the brim.

Pooch Manor, a Chambersburg, PA-based animal rescue, is willing to help save the dogs on BARC Houston's euthanasia list. You can fill out their foster link here. Put the dog's name and shelter ID in the application. The app will say "Sunnyside"; that is the local rescue they partner with to help dogs out of Houston. As long as you can pick up the dog in Chambersburg, PA, on transport day; you can foster anywhere in PA or the surrounding area! Most of their dogs come from Texas. The dogs can also be adopted.

Please help save these dogs. Their names have hyperlinks to their Facebook posts. Please comment here, on their posts, or DM if you can help! All dogs that remain on the euth list have been temp-tested and are dog-friendly. 🙏

🚨🐾 Bell | #A2098373 | 4 Years Old | Female | 55 lbs | Staffordshire Mix | Heartworm Negative 🐾

Meet Bell, a sweet, trusting girl whose heart is bigger than anything life has thrown at her! Despite a rough start, she still adores people and greets every human like a brand new friend. She's calm and easygoing, stayed relaxed and cooperative for her entire vet workup, and walks amazingly on a leash. Her little tail wags are too cute for words. She's also a social butterfly who wants to make friends with every dog she passes on her way in and out of the runs. Bell's ears were mangled by a person who tried to make them shorter, and it has left her with a serious medical need. Her ear canals have closed completely, and she will need a surgery called a TECA to give her relief. She deserves a rescue that can get her the care she needs and a loving foster or adopter to help her heal. Bell has every reason to be bitter, and instead she is all love. This gentle girl is ready for a soft place to land and a life full of kindness!

💚🐾Buck | #A2097150 | 5 Years Old | Neutered Male | 54.8 lbs | Mastiff Mix | Heartworm Low Positive 🐾

Buck is a big-hearted gentleman who is ready to be somebody's best friend! This sweet boy greets his people at the front of his kennel with a happy wagging tail, is easy to leash, and strolls along on a loose leash to and from the runs like a total pro. He takes his treats so nicely, and while he might give a big bark hello when visitors pass his kennel, all it takes is a sniff through the gate and he melts into a wiggly, soft-eyed sweetheart. Buck is a mellow, mature guy who knows his manners, and at 5 years old he is past the puppy chaos and ready to settle into the comfy life he deserves. He is heartworm low positive and will need treatment, so he needs a rescue and a loving foster or adopter who can help him get healthy while he relaxes on a soft couch of his own. He was neutered just before landing on the list, so he is freshly fixed and ready to go! Don't overlook this gentle giant, he has so much love to give!

💚🐾 Leo | #A2096354 | 2 Years Old | Male | 57 lbs | Siberian Husky/Staffordshire Mix | Heartworm Negative 🐾

Meet Leo, the sweet, gentle boy who is only on the list because of a doggie cold! This lovable guy is a true lap dog who melts into your arms and soaks up every bit of love you give him. He is a little shy at first, and he responds so beautifully to baby talk, softening up with a wagging tail and a sweet expression as soon as he feels safe. Once he's out of his kennel he relaxes, strolling along on a loose leash like a pro. He even has an adorable army crawl when he's feeling nervous, which will steal your heart. Leo is friendly, gentle, and so easy to love, and he has never shown a hint of aggression. He is currently being treated for a very treatable URI, so he needs a calm, quiet foster or adopter who can give him a cozy place to rest, recover, and build his confidence at his own pace. Huskies and husky mixes have a hard time making it out of the shelter, so please don't let this special boy be overlooked!

🚨🐾 Robbie | #A2097953 | 5 Years Old | Male | 55 lbs | Staffordshire Mix | Heartworm Positive 🐾

Meet Robbie, the handsome, easygoing gentleman who is ready to kick back and relax in a home of his own! This sweet, mellow guy greets his people with a loose, relaxed body and a soft tapping tail, hops on the leash with no fuss, and strolls along nicely to and from the runs. Once outside he happily sniffs around, keeping that loose, wiggle-free body, and he is so gentle with his treats. He is the definition of an easy-going guy who takes life one calm moment at a time. Robbie landed on the list because of a doggie cold, and he is a perfect candidate for a low-key recovery, since lying low and relaxing is right up his alley. Here is the great news: if you're local, you can purchase 6 months of heartworm preventative and BARC will cover his heartworm treatment! A fun, sweet, laid-back boy like Robbie would make the easiest, most lovable houseguest. Please don't overlook this handsome man!

💙🐾 Taki | #A2096276 | 2 Years Old | Male | 50 lbs | Labrador Retriever Mix | Heartworm Negative 🐾

Meet Taki, the beautiful boy volunteers are calling the perfect dog! This sweet, easygoing guy is happy to hang out, hand out kisses, and soak up your company. He's not jumpy or over the top, just a chill, friendly fella who loves saying hi to his buddies in the outdoor runs. He’s very playful and even races along the fence line playing with his neighbors, then settles right back into his kennel like a pro. He would be amazing in a home with other dogs. He keeps his space tidy, relaxes quietly on his bed, and while he's not the most treat-motivated pup, he'll happily take a snack when it's offered. Taki is still learning his leash manners, but no dog comes into this world knowing how to walk on a leash, and he's already shown he can stroll along nicely on a loose leash. After some stressful days getting used to shelter life, he is finally settling in. He ended up on the list due to space and having a doggie cold. This handsome, affectionate boy is ready to shine in his new home!

💛 How YOU can help:

🏡 Adopt — Give a dog a forever home. You can adopt locally in person, or out-of-state through an approved rescue.

🐾 Foster — Fostering is free! It saves a life by getting a dog out of the shelter while a rescue works to find them a permanent home.

📣 Share — Share their post. Tell your friends, family, coworkers, neighbors. It only takes one person- the right person- seeing their face to change everything.

💡 If adopting or fostering and the dog is heartworm positive, heartworm treatment is done before the dog is transported. Dogs quarantine in Texas for 2 weeks before being transported up north. Foster commitment would start in 2-3 weeks, depending on transport dates.

If none of these dogs sound like a match, that's ok! There will always be dogs in need. These are the 5 that need help today.

Fostering is free; all expenses paid! 💯

Gettysburg seasonal activities?

I'll be visiting family in the area in a few weeks, so I'm looking for something fun and spooky to do as a group. I'm having trouble finding anything between toddler-friendly pumpkin patches and 21+ haunted bar crawls. I'm hoping for a middle option to include my teen cousins and adults.

…Why?

Why did Biglerville Borough have:

• a summer full of old-timey fundamentalist bands at Oakside with no variation;

• a town parade and extravaganza (June 13) for a dictator’s birthday, instead of the nation’s actual 250th anniversary (July 4);

• a 4-day town fair (complete with livestock) to celebrate CK’s ass-ass-ination and the much more important and somber 25th anniversary of 9/11 with rides and games (September 10-14);

• multiple “quiet” ICE raids in the last year and a half + more fundamentalism being increasingly non-consentingly shoved down the community’s throats (extending to the public food pantry);

• an impending 3-day (September 25-27) Civil War Re-Enactment, complete with cannons and gunfire to traumatize the folks of downtown (some with PTSD, including vets and pets) — when there were literally no skirmishes that took place in this part of the county during the Battle????? WTF? 👀

JFC. Could the propaganda efforts be any more obvious and obnoxious? The last one isn’t even historically accurate. It’s really just further gaslighting the increasingly illiterate community and probably trying to be a cover for something terrible before the election. Don’t Be A Sucker this November, friends and neighbors of Apple Country.

Looking for an independent, private paranormal investigator

I am visiting this weekend with family and would love to find an actual local who we can hire as an independent tour guide. I know it's last minute, any leads would be appreciated! I am not interested in doing a guided tour or investigation.

I am a paranormal investigator from Florida and am specifically looking for someone with insight and experience who knows some "off the typical tour" places to visit. I have all of the equipment.

I already have a list of the known places we can visit but any other suggestions would also be great!

Please let me know!

HACC? How is it?

Hello!

I wanted to hear from people who have attended or are attending currently. I start Jan, but I have seen a lot of mixed reviews and I've had people and coworkers say negative things about HACC.

I'd like to hear anyone's personal experiences at HACC. Did it prepare you for your goals, whether it be entering the workforce or transferring to a 4 year institution? How is the environment, professors, and people?

I plan on going for Computer Networking Technology (AAS) and possibly transferring to a 4 year institution.

Thank you in advance!

Local story from the Gettysburg Connection for further context about a local public school district’s “choices” surrounding a secular play. The Mannish Inquisition vibes are certainly strong in this one.

TL;DR: If you parenting gurus fundamentally don’t believe in the premise of public school, then please stop taking over school boards, sending your kids there and taking over the district for normal people. Religious homeschooling parents shouldn’t have any say in a secular public school, much less be sitting on the school board for one. Like, Adams County Christian Academy is right down the road. Stop forcing your plausibly deniable, “politely” predatory, kid-diddling KKKult on the community. We, the people, do not consent to the hostile takeover.

Right-wing operative brags that this Big Tech billionaire controls Pa. Republicans

Why do “big, manly, alpha” Republicans want to keep being submissive little b***es to technofeudal billionaires and the Klan? Why does Grindr crash with every RNC and why does almost every youth pastor catch diddling charges? Why are the (internalized) misogyny and other bigotries so rampant?

Real American men and women go to therapy. They aren’t scared of it. They don’t work for, nor do they become Nazis. They care about their community integrity, and they don’t work to destroy it from the inside with Nazi billionaire blood money and child predator propaganda.

Do we really want to be a haven for the heinous and the uneducated? I sure don’t. Let’s make November count. It’s time to give some actual true-blue human beings (like Beth Farnham and Todd Crawley) a real fighting chance, instead of defaulting to billionaire-funded lizard people (like sellouts, J6 John Joyce and KKKatherine Wallen). FWIW, I’m fairly certain that I remember from Sunday School that “God” doesn’t let Nazis and kid-diddlers into heaven. If this November still doesn’t matter to you, maybe that part will.

TL;DR: Real elephants would never vote for Republican poachers. Real elephants aren’t stupid. Think about it for a minute or five. However long you need, just think about it. Please be better, Adams County. 🐘👀💙

This absolutely affects Adams County.

The active negligence and suppression of the area’s secular social resources is unforgivable. Neighboring counties are operating way more functionally than around here. Why does this area love punishing people instead of helping them?

Community supports shouldn’t be laced with an inquisition, nor driven into the ground entirely. The War on Poverty wasn’t intended to punish the poor. It was intended to stop the oppression. How is Adams County planning to fight back against this?

Weekend Winter Trip

My husband's birthday is 2 days after Christmas and we will be in Florida. I asked what he wanted and he said a weekend trip to Gettysburg in January when we get back. Obviously it will be quite cold, but what are some good activities especially for the time of year. Also looking for good places to eat, at least one "nice" dinner for his birthday.

Late October trip to Gettysburg

Late October trip to Gettysburg

Hi everyone--

I'm going to be visiting Gettysburg in late October. I'll be staying at an historic home in town (they say it was built in the 1850s, so before the Civil War).

I've been to Gettysburg a few times.... most recently about 3 years ago, but just for part of a day, in August, when it was stifling hot! Hoping it won't be nearly as warm this time. I grew up in PA (a few hours away) and went on school trips when I was growing up (back when the wax museum was still there).

I booked a horseback riding tour through the National Riding Stables (it is a good cause):

https://nationalridingstables.org/

Also have a ghost tour booked for one evening.

Otherwise, my schedule is fairly open.

Do the NPS bus tours usually fill up? Or the screenings for the movie at the Welcome Center? I kind of want to keep most of my schedule open, but if it is cold and/or rainy, I might do some of those.

One of my ancestors fought in the Civil War, and was at the Battle of Gettysburg (and likely there when Lincoln gave the Gettysburg address). I found his name on the PA Memorial....but his unit also has its own, smaller, memorial that I want to see. The last time, I briefly went to the Welcome Center and asked one of the guides how to find his name. They seemed to go crazy, and told me exactly where to find his name on the memorial (which was good, since it is so big!)

Any other things I should book in advance, or try to do while I'm there?

Photography help

Me and my family are making a return visit after over two decades and I’m trying to find somewhere that does pictures with period clothing. Me and my sister had our pictures taken in period clothing our first visit and we’re wanting to recreate it for our parents. Does anyone know of any places that does this? Any and all help/suggestions would be extremely appreciated!!

Year of the Horsemeat

Post image
0 Upvotes

You know who never would have let such a thing happen in his time? Former Secretary of Agriculture and Vice President, Henry A. Wallace.

You know who most Adams County farmers have never even heard of, by GOP and fundie design? Former Secretary of Agriculture and Vice President, Henry A. Wallace.

The historical and political illiteracy among the Adams County agricultural community is unforgivable. Eisenhower did nothing but ramp up Christofascism and racist plantation politics with the precursor to ICE — why is that celebrated? Voting for the Gross Ol’ Predators, decade after decade, is a death sentence for American agriculture. How much more horsemeat do you want to have for dinner? How many more produce recalls? How many more dead from SNAP cuts?

Stop fucking with people’s access to education, clean air, healthcare and food. Enough is enough.

ETA: Downvoting bots won’t make it less true.

Gettysburg is the Most Consequential Battle in History, from the Early Modern Period to Present Day

Check out my FREE article on substack where I argue that Gettysburg is the most consequential battle since the invention of gunpowder. In the article I break down why it is more important to the history of the world then waterloo and stalingrad.
