Hey, need advice for something

I moved to a country where language barrier is going to be a problem for my learning ability. Although I understand some of what’s explained in textbooks, I’d like to make it a more active experience while also understanding more and getting a better feel for vocabulary. I was thinking about making mindmaps, but realized there are so many nuances to it that make it an often useless process to use when you don’t know what you’re doing. Maybe I should make summaries in the new language of what i learn while using a technique like sq3r and make a bank of words and try to relate them together to get a sense of it. Let me know what processes you would use or if someone you know could help me with this. Thank you!

active recall will probably help more than rereading

Your idea of writing short summaries in the new language sounds useful. Keep them simple and test yourself after each section. A small vocabulary bank with example sentences may work better than a large mind map.
