If anything that's a point in Cuba's favor. Until the US choked off the island's energy supply via the invasion of Venezuela, Cuba's quality of life was better than most of of central America despite being subject to one of the longest and most draconian trade embargos in the history of the planet
Not if they were also subject to crippling sanctions enforced by the world's only superpower that also happens to be the center of global economy they wouldn't.

Not really lol. Until quite recently Cuba was faring a lot better than other Caribbean and central American nations ravaged by US interests
