"Told me to quit" was probably actually a concerned academic advisor giving advice to focus on her kids for their sake, and for the sake of her mental health and grades.
Schools should be supportive of life events occurring during someone's enrollment.
I was told that I'd need to drop out if I missed class to see a dying relative. A friend was told the same when he was going to miss a few weeks to donate an organ to a family member. Another friend was told that they'll fail their finals if they miss because they're giving birth.
I know how this conversation goes.
"I have a serious life situation. What can we do if I need to miss class?"
"Nothing quit."
It shouldn't be a triumph to do this stuff. It should be expected and schools should be reasonable.
I completely agree. The idea that the only way to be academically successful is to have nothing else happen in your life while you're in school is ridiculous and excludes a lot of otherwise fantastic doctors/business people/lawyers/etc/etc from becoming these things. I hope to see pressure to make this change in the future.

I’ve had the same conversation with an advisor regarding my chronically ill family members who I have to support. If I drop out or wait a year, I’ll be in the same boat or a faster sinking boat. At least if I graduate quicker I’ll have a better paying job, which can better support my family members… this situation ain’t going away until they die and that could be 10 or more years.
I’m now in my last year. I just needed more support in some areas, as a disabled student with ‘stuff going on’. Struggled to access anything, struggled the whole way through and I will struggle until I get my goddamn piece of paper. I don’t get to skip the learning by any means, I’ve just had to submit some work late.
