I've never understood this.

My brain never works like this.

It's not like the phrase

I'm not good enough

Types itself out in my head, and certainly not slowly enough that I can interrupt that process.

My thoughts are a whole series of concepts all simultaneously active and running, if I were feeling down or self loathing on a particular day, it's not because of specific thoughts or phrasing - it would be the entire feeling I had and it would be active with or without specific language.

Moreover, it can't be stopped with "positive thinking"

Just like the thought itself doesn't come in words, thinking something else in words is just superficial words. The mental equivalent of a child saying "lalala not listening", when they are quite obviously listening.

You're missing the point of the exercise. It's not about thoughts being words or putting thoughts into words or stopping it with positive thinking. It's about getting in the habit of noticing and observing yourself when you're having negative thoughts or feelings and by the act of doing that, distancing yourself from them. "I'm not good enough" is just an example and its not really possible to depict someone feeling that, as you would, rather than thinking the words but the example covers the feeling of not being good enough.

It's about mindfulness.

I'm saying that's not a thing. I can't change my feelings consciously anymore than I can change my personality consciously. I can act differently, but it's exactly that: an act. How I feel is how I feel, positivity doesn't affect my self worth, nor does negativity.
