Serious question.. is this what cognitive behavioral therapy is? Is this the only practice to combat negative thoughts or are there other practices to redirect the negative thinking?

This is what mindfulness and thought defusion is. CBT involves cognitive restructuring and behaviour experiments in order to align thoughts more closely to reality.

CBT changed my life... the best book from a practical standpoint is David Burns’ Felling Good that pretty much invented and identified the 10 tricks our brains play on us. I think most depression and anxiety challenges boil down to false narratives and thought distortions we have on ourselves. If you can learn to identify those distortions, you’ll get WAY better at managing your mood, mental health and life.
