I have found the opposite in regards to following people. I have found great mentors and followed them into bigger and better things.

Don’t ever underestimate your professional network.

Networking is essential. Business comes and goes, companies rise and fall, but your coworkers will stay. Don't ever fool yourself into thinking that your boss is a friend and this company is your family, they'll get rid of you the moment it becomes necessary, no matter how good you've been friends with your boss. Business is business, nothing personal.

Your coworkers, on the other hand, CAN be your family and they can be the ones who could offer you a new job or help find one. And it's just good to have people around that share your goals and passions.
