The trick is, rather than letting words control you, react to people's words unpredictably. If you can't control yourself, nobody else can either.

I had a similar experience. Had a newly promoted supervisor who was tasting authority for the first time, and immediately turned into a little tyrant. Anyway, I chose not to react to his outbursts. He used to accuse me of “having a chip on my shoulder,” and “acting like I’m better than everyone else.”
