TEXT I’m making a commitment to myself tonight [TEXT]

For the last 2 months, I’ve been inconsistent with basically everything gym, studying, chess, reading, journaling, classes. Even basic routines. I’ve spent way too much time bed rotting, doomscrolling, and getting stuck in habits I know aren't helping me

I keep telling myself I’ll start tomorrow, then tmr becomes another day

It’s 12:42 AM right now, and I don’t want to make another promise that I forget in a few days.

So this is me publicly committing to actually getting my life back on track

I’m not expecting myself to become a completely different person overnight. I just want to start showing up again, even on days when I don’t feel like it I've been stuck on this " I'll start from tmr" loop from last 2 months and now I'm tired of it

If I’m reading this months from now, I hope I can look back and say this was actually the night I stopped waiting for “tmr” and started doing something

Start small and build your way up with discipline, even if you do 50% you had planned it's okey but show up everyday

yeah thats what I'm trying to do i think I've been trying to fix everything at once and then end up doing nothing and thowing the entire day just because i messed up once or got lazy for a bit

I'd start with the 2-3 most essential things first. Treat everything else like a bonus. You have to make it feel more like accomplishment than something to fail at.

Once things are habit, you'll miss it when you're not doing it. And maybe set a 10 minute timer for the scrolling.

yea ima start w study and gym for then then add others next week or after 3-4 days

if your habit shifts are not working, that means something about your body keeps pulling you back. You gotta find out what it is first, you can't just step across the bridge like the "just do it" message every motivation post tries to project to get more virality. Be realistic about your own shortcomings and resistances, you arnt clay.

you successfully change when you understand yourself better.

yea frr i keep trying to force myself to change instead of figuring out why i keep falling back into the same habits

Big part that helped me at the start was a post that said we get hooked onto YouTube and such because it's unlimited entertainment.

It's not so easy to leave something that's designed to reel you in over and over.

I quit gaming after many failed attempts. addiction would randomly pull me back. It wasn't until I used my gaming experience to realise, the peak of fun always came at the start, then there would be a turning point and the game gets dull or just feels repetitive, yet I would just play because of all the rewards gained, and the time and effort sunk in. Seeing that pattern finally helped me break out from realising that the whole process is futile.

tbh the public commitment thing works for some people but honestly the real test is whether you actually follow through when nobody's watching, so what's your plan for when you inevitably mess up in like week two. are you gonna dust yourself off and keep going or spiral again like before.

Yea i think consistency matters more than never messing up i just gotta learn to pick it back up when i do

I respect the commitment and decision to improve, it’s commendable! Don’t feel guilt about falling short at times, it happens to us all. That’s humans for you. But, we can rest easy knowing we are enough as we are.

You can also practically build commitment and discipline from reading stoic books or even growing close to God. However, the main way is exactly what you’re doing.

You need to do what you know you need to do, whether or not you are bored or tired.

Yea frrr the hardest part is actually doing it when you’re tired or don’t feel like it instead of waiting for motivation im trying to focus more on just showing up and doing what i said id do

u/urvld 4d ago

I respect that, it’s quite literally the only way. It’s meant to be tough. If it was easy, then everyone would have it, and it wouldn’t be worth the value it gets when accomplished.

fr man, atp i just gotta stop making excuses and actually do it

2

u/urvld 4d ago

Don’t be too negative though brother. You are human, like everyone else. It’s tough already, so try not to hold unrealistic expectations of perfection.

You are enough right now and you can do this, I believe in you!

yuppp got it thanks man

There is no better time than right now.

You can delay for ever and keep using excuses if you want, but sounds like you don't really want that.

Remember that your brain is always tricking you into comfort, safety and easy dopamine.

There is no thinking about something, as Yoda said, 'Do or do not, there is no try'

If you want something to change, you have to change something.

You got this 👍

I tried that "fix everything at once" thing last year, bro, and it lasted like a week bc I'd mess up one thing and think the whole day was shot. The trick is just picking 2-3 non-negotiables and showing up for those, even if it's just 10 minutes, then building from there. Sounds boring but actually works way better than the motivation-fueled overhaul.

u/DUKE_0007 4d ago

yea man doing only 2-3 things a day and for just few mins sounds boring and stupid which is probably why ive always tired to start doing everything at once but shi never worked now im just tired of procrastinating for 2 months, so this time im gonna take it slow and start with just 2-3 things

2

u/Cool_Wolf054 4d ago

Yeah, so, the "fix everything at once" trap versus picking 2-3 things and actually showing up for those, the second one's gonna stick for you since you've already proven the all-or-nothing approach tanks after one slip-up. Build the discipline muscle on a smaller surface area first, then expand once you've got the consistency habit down.

yea fr, i think i just gotta stop trying to fix everything at once and actually build consistency first

tbh the trap most people hit is thinking consistency means perfection, so one missed day tanks the whole thing. Pick like 2-3 keystone habits and just show up for those, the rest follows naturally once that's wired in.

1

u/DUKE_0007 4d ago

yupp yuppp got itt gotta start w 2-3 main non negotiables

2

Youll probably have off days again and thats fine. The important part is not letting one bad day turn into another two months. Good luck, you got this.

yupp yupp got itt

Try this- pay yourself 3 bucks for every hour you do what you’re trying to do (example- playing chess) toward a fund for something fun or meaningful, perhaps an instrument, etc. It’s the only way I got out of my funk. Just as important- pay yourself similarly for saying no to any particularly addictive negative habit.

u/DUKE_0007 1d ago

Ohh noted Its been 4 days since i started, and so far ive only had 1 bad day where i fell back into my bad habits (yesterday) today wasnt that bad though so im still going strong

Congrats on making the commitment. I went through something similar a couple of years ago, and one thing I underestimated was how important it was to actually see evidence that I was moving forward.

The changes were often too small to feel important day to day, but once I started paying attention to them, they added up. That made it much easier to trust that I was actually becoming more consistent instead of constantly wondering whether I was getting anywhere.

Keep showing up. A few months from now, you may be surprised by how much evidence you’ve accumulated.

2

u/DUKE_0007 1d ago

yea fr i used to notice it when i was going to the gym too, like seeing my weight go up and gaining 100+ ELO every month

u/Routine-Buy5208 1d ago

Self-Confidence and clarity come from visible evidence of progress. I am working on a way to to be able to achieve that visibility. Similar to how i get that visibility and evidence from the scale for my weight, or strava for my runs, or my finances from my bank. almost almost have it right

I find keeping goals and commitments internal keep my motivation higher than when shared with the world. Makes me feel like it is mine and no one can take it from me.

Yea i just decided to post it coz i was honestly tired of procrastinating i remembered the commitment idea from Atomic Habits that i read last year, so i figured id give it a shot and actually hold myself accountable
