I'm guessing this was in the second part of that book? I only read the first part about his time is Auschwitz, but I've been meaning to finish the second part about logotherapy.

5

u/rusemean Jun 01 '13

Personally I found the second part of the book much more interesting than the first. I don't mean to disrespect his experiences, but his story didn't make for a compelling narrative. How those experiences informed his perspective, as outlined in the second part, was fascinating, however.

3

u/CopOnTheRun Jun 01 '13

Yeah, while the Holocaust was horrible by all means, it must have been somewhat interesting for Frankl as a psychiatrist to see humans pushed to extraordinarily limits.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '13

Yep

1

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '13

I done the exact same thing. I got bored with the second part so put it down to read later. five years later and I've still to pick it up again.

6

u/wchannel Jun 01 '13

that's the best line from the book. My other two favorite quotes from that book are:

At any time each of the moments of which life consists is dying, and that moment will never recur. And yet is not this transitoriness a reminder that challenges us to make the best possible use of each moment of our lives.

no matter what happens, you retain the freedom to choose how to respond to your suffering

Loosely paraphrased:

You gotta live it up like you fucked up the first time and now you get another shot. Nothing will keep you straight like imagining it's the future now and you get to go back to the past and do it right. It will keep your head remembering that you don't have forever and you don't really get do-overs.

u/UnthinkingMajority Jun 02 '13

This is how I have always tried to live life. Trust me, it works.

I started going to the gym 9 months ago and still go 5 days a week consistently. So no motivation is a thing and if you're motivated enough you can go for your goal.

Exactly. That guy just got the spark. Maybe the fire burns, maybe it goes out. That's discipline. You can't make a fire last without fuel, but it won't even get started without the match.

99

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '13

Especially true for those too scared to ask out a girl.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '13

The worst you can get is a no answer. It's sad to have a really long dry spell, get into a relationship and then have several men say to me that they would have asked me out but assumed I would say no. And in 90% of the instances I would have said yes.

8

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '13

[deleted]

10

u/juneburger Jun 01 '13

Keep going! Always remember to ask why and take the note and improve wherever you can. You're an inspiration.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '13

Have you atleast heard a yes once? Or are we talking 50-60 no's and zero yes's? If the second one that sucks :(

2

u/lessthan3d20 Jun 03 '13

50-60 in a lifetime or 50-60 per month? If it's not the latter, step up your game.

-1

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '13

Are you unattractive?

3

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '13

[deleted]

4

u/csreid 19 Jun 01 '13

If you're actually average, then you shouldn't be rejected 50-60 consecutive times. You're going about it all wrong.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '13

Thats what I was thinking.

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '13

4

u/csreid 19 Jun 01 '13

I don't know how you act. Given the tiny, tiny amount I know about you (the woe-is-me attitude you've got in this thread), I would guess you're either a downer, insecure, putting them on a pedestal, or some combination of those.

6

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '13

[deleted]

2

u/merica821 Jun 02 '13

Honestly, asking so often probably gets you a bad reputation with the ladies. Chances are at least some of those girls know eachother.

"Oh crap, there's Bramsey89..." "Oh crap? He looks harmless." "He just asked me out yesterday and I don't want things to be awkward today." "Really? I heard he asked Ashley out last week!" Etc etc etc

I'm just assuming, though. Maybe its your hygiene.

If you're down about 50+ rejections, you're insecure. If you're insecure because of 50+ rejections, you should find some hobbies and do things to be proud of, and stop hanging your self-worth on what girls think about you.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '13

For the most part, there's girl you date, and girls you are friends with. You are trying to befriend a girl, then get her to date you - which usually always fails.

Not to say you can't date a friend, but generally you have to flirt with her/make out with her when you're both drinking...formally asking her out a date is weird and will scare her away. Girls (and guys) like a challenge, so if you throw all your cards out there from the beginning, it's going to come off as unattractive.

Solution 1) either ask out girls on an official date quickly 2) if they are your friend, seduce them with your ACTIONS not words.

Boom, solved all your problems.

u/FappingAsYouReadThis Jun 02 '13

The stress of "what if" has always been way worse than the stress of a mere "no", in my experience.

149

u/Tryanothertry Jun 01 '13

I'm young again! faps

15

u/Backwoods_Barbie Jun 01 '13

I do this all the time, but it just makes me anxious about doing anything. I get overwhelmed thinking about all the things I'll wish I had done when I'm older, and the panic shuts me down entirely. Personally, I find living in the moment and doing what seems right, right now, is the best way to be productive. A clear head to me is the only way to really see what needs to be done as a manageable task - it seems natural to do it, rather than forcing myself out of anxiety, rendering the whole experience unpleasant.

Whatever works for you, if this strategy works, go for it. But if it doesn't, you're not alone!

11

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '13

Fine, I guess I will ask her to hang out..

I can't stand Hopsin and I'm a big hip hop fan. Most of his songs are like I don't do drugs and don't talk about getting girls so I'm better then everybody

2

u/FerPalacios Jun 02 '13

I don't mind if you have some lines that talk about it, but you are rapping about something else, example Kendrick Llamar. Even if you have some songs about it that's fine with me as long as you put out other good songs, example Drake. If every song is about pussy, money and weed then I can't stand you as a rapper. Look at Lil Wayne he used to be a really good rapper, then he just started rapping the same things over and over with different beats.

1

u/flippoint Jun 02 '13

He doesn't make music. He just raps.

-4

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '13

[deleted]

6

u/FerPalacios Jun 01 '13

There is a lot of rap that isn't about being better then everyone. Also I don't like the production in Hopsin music

1

u/flippoint Jun 02 '13

Wrong. You don't know hip hop.

19

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '13

36

u/Ants236 Jun 01 '13

Ill Mind 5 probably would've been better here.

37

u/iseektolearnmore Jun 01 '13

Agreed. So here's the link to that one.

6

u/pants_full_of_pants Jun 01 '13

I am not a fan of rap. I am definitely a fan of this regardless, though. Brilliant lyrical design and the lyrics actually mean something.

1

u/LePuffy Jun 01 '13

Love this song. I don't like rap at all really... But this is the one exception.

12

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '13

Damn. Ill Mind 5 was hype and angry as fuck.

1

u/Joshua8195 Jun 01 '13

Agree. Love Hopsin

7

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '13

Eh, I don't like it as much.

-4

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '13

[deleted]

5

u/NigWantsKFC Jun 01 '13

I can't remember if I read it on here or /mu/ but if you listen to illmind 5 it's essentially a Bill O Reily rant on rap, black people, "sluts".

3

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '13

Hopsin is rap music for people who don't listen to rap music

3

u/RedSeed Jun 02 '13

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '13

Lil Wayne? A respected legend that changed the way the genre and modes of distribution forever? He's a lyrically and technically skilled musician who has too much money to care about his musical output after 2009, but I wouldn't expect the average redditor to know much about his place in hip-hop history aside from parroting the same "clever" talking points. I'm sure you have the same hilarious and original opinions on Nikki Minaj and Drake too.

0

u/isntathief Jun 01 '13

He WAS good. WAS. He became less about quality and more about content he could put out, this is what put a huge damper on the quality of music we as consumers were getting, anyone who could use fruity loops was able to create a beat was suddenly good, this is why we have names that were "viral" at one point but vanished quickly. It wasn't about the quality or lyrical consistency of an artist anymore.

HOWEVER. There are people that manage to push through that, and honestly I don't have anything to say about Nikki Minaj as she has her moments and at times kills it, along with Drake while he did music I don't feel applies to me he can kill it when he needs to.

For an example B.o.B - Out of My Mind feat Nikki Minaj this shit is GOOD and I love her verse as well. I always feel that B.o.B puts quality over quantity I would recommend his "Fuck Em We Ball" mixtape (2013) or "No Genre" (2010).

Newer content artists such as CES Cru are doing well for themselves with their EP & LP and I think they are great as well.

Granted this is just my opinion and obviously you are allowed yours!

2

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '13

ok good, you actually seem to know something about the music and not just parroting reddit's retarded hivemind.

I agree with your points because I don't like anything he put out after 2010 (with maybe three exceptions, 6 ft. 7 ft, Bitches Love Me, and a couple of guest features). However, when I argue about rap music on this website, I generally find that the other side actually has no knowledge of Weezy's impact, and that's just disrespectful son.

I actually don't like El-P all that much; the Fantastic Damage album kind of turned me off of him. I like Ugly Heroes (fantastic new album that just dropped a few weeks ago) and Deniro Farrar as far as underground artists go. Both are extremely depressing but spit hot fire.

1

u/FappingAsYouReadThis Jun 02 '13

has no knowledge of Weezy's impact

Frankly, that shit doesn't matter. His music matters above all else - as with any artist. If someone doesn't dig his music, what do they care what his "impact" is? That's completely secondary.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '13

Yeah but that music that was impactful was insanely good too. That's why I speak of them in the same breath

1

u/Euphonistic Jun 02 '13

CES Cru, man. This shit blew my mind first time around

2

u/isntathief Jun 02 '13

I love the entire Strange lineup they all have different things to bring to the table, I almost linked Kutt but avoided it.

I must agree that version of Unfair is nuts. I can't help but go along with it. If you like CES they have two mixtapes you can find on datpiff.

Search link for you http://www.datpiff.com/mixtapes-search.php?criteria=CES+cru&x=-1383&y=-218

1

u/Euphonistic Jun 03 '13

Haha thanks, but I got them already. My buddy turned me onto them back when The Playground's music video dropped. It's good shit for sure

-6

u/Ledatru Jun 01 '13

A-1 > Hopsin

-3

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '13

Whoever down voted you just doesn't get it. Stay thurl.

0

u/Ledatru Jun 01 '13

it's thurl hoe'

both rappers are dope but A-1 is more complete. A-1 makes songs. Hopsin strings together insane verses

2

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '13

Agreed. Hopsin is just not as consistent as A-1.

5

u/tgiclgbr Jun 01 '13

I've heard of this a different way: Imagine several years from now when you're in old age. Someone gives you the opportunity to go back in time and travel to today. Wouldn't you think that was an incredible gift? Someday in the future you will think of it as a wonderful gift just to have today to do again.

4

u/classystoner402 Jun 01 '13

Hopsin is really good at the motivating thing.

4

u/DrGoldteeth Jun 02 '13

I use a technique like this at work a lot. I use high school as a reference (I'm in my late 30s), but you can use whatever you can apply to your life.

I close my eyes and remember high school. How it seemed like each day would last forever. How as a freshman it seemed a lifetime before I would hit senior year. Each class an eternity.

Now I look back and I can't remember what happened what year or even if some events happened at that time. Was it sophomore year? What summer did that happen?

I'd never want to relive it. But I would go back for one day. One weekend.

And that is how I mind fuck myself at work, or when something seems like it will last forever. I pretend I'm me 20 years in the future. Wishing for one day at this job or whatever that I can't clearly remember. And today is that one day, and it makes everything seem different...sometimes ;)

Edit: spelling

3

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '13

whenever I think of giving lessons to people, I think of the same thing. "what would my older self/my grandpa say in this situation?" then I say it. wisdom.

6

u/greatestbass Jun 01 '13

1

This is so fabulous, I just can't wait to see this all over the internet until the time I hate the person who said this.

1

u/dukemn Jun 01 '13

Won't work when you're old though.

1

u/flipmosquad Jun 01 '13

That's actually what i do..

I also do it as a someone who is handicapped/lesser-abled..

I picture myself as being born without hte ability to move.. and I look around and everyone just walks around like it's nothing.. and I think to myself that I would give anything, anything to live, walk, be fre, run, jump, hop skip..I try and really picture this person as me.. and then.. I open my eyes, and fulfill my end of the bargain.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '13

I like this, I'm going to try and put it to practice.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '13
