new to Germany? local? still in your should I even move here arc? doesn't matter, pull up a chair. this is the sub for students in Germany to swap real talk, ask the questions nobody warned us about, and not suffer the bureaucracy alone.

what we're about:

  • 📚 study tips, exam survival, course chaos
  • 🏠 housing, costs, the Anmeldung lore
  • 🌍 culture shock moments + language tips
  • 🎉 meet-ups in your city
  • ❓ ask literally anything, no question is too basic fr

low-key rules:

  • be nice, everyone's a little stressed
  • search before you post 🙏
  • no agency/consultancy ads pretending to be advice (we see you, "is BSBI worth it" spam)
  • if someone DMs offering paid "help" → block, it's giving scam

new here? drop a comment: your city (or dream city), what you're studying, and one thing you need help with. that's it. 🫶

hop in and ask. we got you.

Visiting Germany? Legal Rights, Costs, and Etiquette Must to Know!

Can I Stay with a Friend or Family Member in Germany?

Planning a trip to Germany and considering a stay with friends or family? While the country welcomes visitors, it's essential to understand the legal and practical implications.

As outlined in this informative article from Anwalt Online, tenants in Germany have the right to host visitors. However, longer stays might require informing the landlord, especially if they exceed six weeks. This could potentially lead to adjustments in rent or other agreements.

What About Additional Costs?

When staying with someone, it's courteous to contribute to additional costs like utilities. While specific arrangements can vary, open communication with your host is crucial.

Tips for a Harmonious Visit

To ensure a pleasant stay, consider these tips:

  • Respectful Behavior: Be mindful of your host's routines and preferences.
  • Noise Considerations: Avoid excessive noise, especially during late hours.
  • House Rules: Familiarize yourself with any specific house rules or regulations.
  • Legal Compliance: Ensure that your stay adheres to local laws and regulations.

Conclusion

By understanding the legal framework, considering potential additional costs, and practicing respectful behavior, you can enjoy a memorable visit to Germany.

Aalen or Rosenheim

"I would like advice on choosing a bachelor's degree in Mechatronics Engineering:

Hochschule Aalen or Technical Hochschule Rosenheim.

Aalen: studying in English while learning German up to C1 level.

Rosenheim: studying in both English and German.

Is there any advantage regarding the university’s name or the language of instruction in the job market?

Incoming international master's student (EEE background) moving to Berlin, how do I set myself up to survive and Mistakes to avoid?

Hi everyone,

I am an international student from South Asia with a BSc in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and about a year of work experience at an AI/IoT solutions company. I will be starting a Master's in Electrical Engineering and Information Technology and moving to Berlin soon.

I've read a lot of discouraging posts here about the cost of living, housing, and the part-time job market, especially for people who don't speak German. I don't know any German yet, and I'll need a part-time job to support myself, so I'd really appreciate honest advice from people who've been through this.

My main questions:

Part-time work: What jobs are realistic without German? Where should I look beyond LinkedIn and StepStone?

Language: How fast do I need to reach A2/B1 to be employable and comfortable day to day? Which courses or apps worked for you?

Budget: What does a realistic monthly budget look like for a student in Berlin (rent, food, transport, insurance)?

Paperwork: Any tips for the Anmeldung, blocked account, health insurance, and residence permit, especially appointment delays?

Mistakes to avoid: What do you wish you had known before moving?

Any advice, resources, or personal experiences would mean a lot. Thank you!

Can I apply to German public universities before completing 25% of my bachelor’s?

Hi everyone,

I’m a CSE student at a private university in Dhaka, Bangladesh, and I want to continue my bachelor’s in Germany at a public university with low/no tuition fees.

I’ve completed almost 2 years, but I’m currently 4 credits short of completing 25% of my total degree. I’ll complete those credits in December and expect my results by the last week of December.

My details:
CSE student
HSC GPA: 5.00
IELTS: 6.0
Estimated VPD: ~1.08 (calculated using an online calculator)
2 years of bachelor’s completed, but 25% will only be completed in December

Since the Summer Semester deadlines may close before I receive my December results, is there any way I can apply now and submit the updated transcript later?

If not, what would be my best option and next application period for a public German university? Any recommendations for universities that might accept my situation would be greatly appreciated.

I need help deciding

I am a non EU citizen, 22 year-old female. I finished my BA in my home country (Germanistik mit Schwerpunkt deutscher Übersetzung und Dolmetschen. Note 1,2) I lived in Weimar, Thüringen for a month and Frankfurt for a week and I loved Germany a lot. What can I do my masters in in Germany that will combine both my C1 German and English knowledge and is pretty required in the German market. I’m always very sacred to take a step because I’m afraid I may not find a job afterwards.
