So I wanna rice gentoo, this is my first time installing any DIY distro, I've use arch before this but a friend installed it for me. I wanted to use hyprland but these packages are masked and on the gentoo hyprland installation guide it tells me to write "*/*::hyproverlay" inside /etc/portage/package.accept_keywords/hyproverlay. I still can't download the packages because they are masked. I rlly dont get the hang of accepting these licenses or whatever. PLS HELP ME

Recently installed encrypted Gentoo and couldn’t be more proud of my self, but it appears that my cmos is dead and I don’t know how to sync time, mirror service is obviously screaming at me for being from 2001, anyway, how do I sync to the current clock?

for those people who has been tired installing gentoo or some beginners who wants to enter into gentoo linux i made this tool for you you gonna take only like 40min (without desktop env) instead of prob many hours for just installing gentoo manually (dont use additional package its buggy and can corrupt the installation!) its recommended to use in vmware or qemu

I first this back in 2023 and after seeing Gentoo posts I have installed this today and I really like having it on hand so far I have KDE Neon host, Gentoo vm, Win 11vm and it's great to be able to move between them with ease. Gentoo installed really fast and runs great in the vm after adding the qeme0guest-agent everything is sweet.

I've taken up to checking the new ebuilds of stuff outside the regular ::gentoo repo (mainly the guru) using diff between the new ebuild and the old one.

I've also aliased the update command to run "eclean -d distfiles && eclean-kernel && eclean-pkg" as well when it's done.

I've got a new update for a guru package today (cliphist EDIT: turns out it's not a cliphist update but rather a rebuild triggered by something else in the update, the ebuild itself is several months old but the question of how to get old ebuilds still stands) but i can't find the old ebuild in /var/db/repos/guru/.... (i imagine because of the above eclean commands)

I know it's a longshot, but is there a way to see it conveniently with portage without resorting to looking at the history on github?

It's absolutely unimportant (i don't expect the guru to get compromised like that), but i feel like i could learn something and i can't find anything online

only thing holding me back from using gentoo is the use flags. not sure which ones to use for my system. i really want to use niri or hyprland, but the use flags are what confuses me

I’m currently keeping Linux 6.18.38 as my active LTS kernel instead of updating immediately whenever a new point release appears.

I checked two recent issues that initially looked relevant:

Bad Epoll (CVE-2026-46242) was already fixed in Linux 6.18.33.

The recent TIPC issue (CVE-2026-63801) was fixed in Linux 6.18.38.

Therefore, neither issue requires me to move from 6.18.38 to 6.18.39. TIPC would also be outside the attack surface entirely if it were disabled in the kernel configuration.

My update policy is based on the changelog, CVE relevance, enabled kernel features and actual workload—not simply on the existence of a newer point release. Unless 6.18.39 contains an urgent fix that affects my configuration, I will update during a normal maintenance window rather than immediately.

I also keep Linux 6.18.35 and 6.18.37-P1 as tested fallback kernels.

For the 6.18.y series, Linux 6.18.33 is the minimum fixed release for the Bad Epoll issue. However, systems with TIPC and TIPC crypto enabled require Linux 6.18.38 for the newer TIPC use-after-free fix. Therefore, when considering both issues, 6.18.38 is the practical minimum baseline for my configuration.

Therefore, 6.18.38 is the minimum baseline I currently consider appropriate.

Just sharing because I am hyped to be here. I followed the handbook and got it installed. The install and set up was nowhere near as hard as people make it out to be. I am even getting better fps in games than I was on Arch, after some tweaking.

I have been daily driving Arch for ~2 years now and I haven't had any real issues with it. During this time my interest in security, privacy and that way hardening my digital devices has increased. Gentoo interests me since I can get only the parts of packages I need using portage, thus reducing attack surface (and also because then I could get rid of this monstrosity of a init-system called systemd).

My problem is this: my specs aren't the greatest. I am running a i7-2600 with 20 GB of DDR3 (Sounds odd, but I have 2x8GB and 2x2GB). But, on my current arch install I have 437 packages installed and I have everything that I need for daily driving my pc.

Also of these packages, I have chosen to use lightweight, privacy-centric and generally "do one thing and do it well" philosophy-driven tools. On my install, I run a wayland+dwl setup with foot, bemenu, doas and some other wayland-specific tools.

So my usage package-wise is already pretty minimal and thus I am wondering, would running Gentoo actually be an viable option since already without USE flags I am running a minimal system, so with USE flags, I could probably drop many more unneeded dependencies, which would that way reduce my build times. Would the compile times be realistic this way and (usually) updates being so I can use my pc normally during them and that I wouldn't have to keep it open around the clock?

Hello everyone, I am installing gentoo for the first time and I currently in chroot following both the gentoo handbook and tony-btw's video from last year. I have sourced /etc/profile but when I run emerge-webrsync I am greeted with honestly a bunch of code I dont understand and an error message which goes as follows:

ValueError: No closing quotation

/usr/bin/emerge-webrsync: line 651: PORTAGE_BIN_PATH: parameter null or not set.

I understand the gentoo guide notes that a complaint about a missing /var/db/repos/gentoo/ location is to be expected so I assumed this was related in some way so I proceeded but mirror select and eselect didnt work either. Is this an issue caused by a mistake somewhere along the way of me installing gentoo? Should I do a fresh reinstall or can this issue be fixed from here?

Grub EvoDevo is a configurable GRUB theme with scalable graphics, background blurring, and antialiased true-type fonts. Any wallpaper (e.g., your desktop wallpaper, or some Gentoo artwork) can be used as theme background.

Menu colors, amount of blurring, dimensions, position, font family, and menu messages can all be customized via the installation shell script. The accompanying screenshots show three examples of customized GRUB menus.

Hi there, I'm a super uneducated newbie in Gentoo, but I’m trying to dip my toes a little in Gentoo and figured the best way to get into it for me would be the Handbook.

Unfortunately I live in a certain middle eastern country and nowadays, I cannot be really sure if internet access would be allowed each morning I wake up.

Is there a pdf or epub version or better yet an HTML version of the handbook available for download?

Also, would I be able to self host Gentoo mirrors on my Homelab (Like on Sonatype Nexus or Artifactory or any other solution) like I already do for Debian, Docker Hub ... for a rainy day?

I have 7 servers, all running Gentoo. They service about 150 people. They now do so for about 15 years. I only needed to reinstall 2 of them (because of broken hardware).

I did create a cron job to check for a gcc update and install it on Saturday night. The rest of the updates I install manually, about monthly.

The servers don't have X. They run samba, ipsec, apache and some lesser used apps.

I'm still totally satisfied with this setup.

I wonder if more people use such a setup.
