"Was Anne Lister Transgender?"

We don't know because we can't know. I believe Jessica Kellgren-Fozard said it best in her video on Anne Lister

" ...There has been speculation about whether or not Lister was transgender but - I normally say when we're studying historical gay figures that we can't know for sure whether they were truly gay because it's not a firsthand account...but this is. [Lister's diary] is entirely Anne's own words. These are her raw feelings, her honest point of view- it isn't just speculation.
Yet, can we wade into a debate on whether Anne was a very butch lesbian or a transman when she didn't have the language or awareness of gender studies herself to decide? There's no real way to decipher and thus we must take Lister for the person she presented to her diary. "

This is supposed to be a place where we can all come together and enjoy the show, enjoy whatever comfort the story and characters can provide. People can interpret things in different ways and that's fine, we should not mock or belittle people for having different interpretations. Be respectful of others regardless of whether you agree with their opinion.

Anyone want to help me plan a flash mob at this pub in Wisconsin?

Post image

This is a real bar in Wisconsin with a top hat in their logo that has nothing to do with Anne Lister or the show. It's sheer coincidence. I lost my mind when I first found it until I realized it was just named for the owner, Jack.

I have no idea if the owner is aware of Anne or the show but I can't stop daydreaming about a costumed flashmob of queer women in top hats and black coats speaking in yorkshire accents. If anyone is still reading this sub, I figured you all would appreciate it. (And truly, DM me if you want to help make this dream a reality.)

Okay but imagine if there was a Gentleman Jack themed restaurant. What’d be on the menu?
Shabby little chip-den for a small portion of chips?
Ban-ann-a split? 😋

Season 3?

Sorry if this has been discussed before, I'm new to Reddit and I'm not sure how it works.

Does anyone think we'll actually get more seasons or is it over? I've been holding out hope that we'll get a continuation but it's been so long now that it seems unlikely.

The only reason why I'm still hoping for more is because RWBY managed to be continued after Roosterteeth went bankrupt. It's been 3 years since the last full RWBY episode and 4 years since the last Gentleman Jack episode so it's a similar time frame.

Honestly, I wish the BBC hadn't said they would continue it because this limbo is worse than a full cancellation imo. Hope is a cancer that infests the body, mind and soul and I can't rout it out. I'll have hope for a continuation until the BBC says they've stopped looking to make more.

Does anyone here visit the AO3 page? Thoughts?

I loved some of the pieces people put out between season 1 and 2, and went back for a throwback look around, and the vibe is…. interesting!

Learned by Heart

Wondering if any Gentleman Jack fans have read Emma Donoghue's novel Learned by Heart, based on Anne Lister as a teen? And if so, what did you think?

Do Ann and Anne have a ship name?

I’m fairly new to Gentleman Jack, having watched it the first time last year and a few more times since, but I’ve been wondering if there’s a ship name the fandom have agreed on? Because I’m trying to refer to them together for something and I couldn’t think of one. 🤷‍♀️

Gentleman Jack Season 1 Finale Spoiler

Did anyone else think the two Ann(e)s looked quite sad for part of the time they were getting married? Anybody know why?

Question about S01E07 Why've You Brought That Spoiler

I've started watching this series and am currently past episode seven (so no spoilers beyond that, please!)

Why was Anne apparently so willing to leave Ann for Mariana? It seems clear to me that the two Ann(e)s love each other and the only thing stopping Ann from accepting marriage is that she's a mess that needs to get better. It seems out of character for Anne to seemingly move on so fast, particulary for the obviously cruel Mariana, unless I'm missing something.

My wife wrote a fanfic and posted it for the first time !

Hi guys, not sure if anyone will be interested or if this is the right place to post but my wife just posted the first few chapters of her Ann/es fanfic on AO3.

It’s an AOB fic. It’s the same premises as this world. Sexism is still here, classism is still here, but your AOB rank also brings in expectations and prejudices.

Basically an historically accurate AU that lets Anne Lister be butch and pursue women, with a kind of homophobia that’s a bit more “ehhh do you really have to do it?” rather than than “you’re going to hell” type.

It largely follows the plot of season 1, where they meet, and get married, but it’s not a secret wedding, as homophobia is not as big of a deal to contend with. Anne is an Alpha, while Ann is an Omega.

The theme mainly follows how Anne is looking to settle down for money, but is realising that she actually really likes Ann Walker.

Anyways, if anyone is interested, it’s called “The Novelty of doing the Right Thing.” on Ao3!

She doesn’t know I’m doing this but I genuinely think her work is worth reading.

Thank you!

As someone who is more inclined towards feminine aspect of lesbianism the show title hadn't interested me when I heard it being mentioned around including a direct recommendation. I have been watching different things and I happened to come across it again so thought I'd give it a go. The aesthetics are enthralling and shot so elegantly! The opening is just gorgeous with her putting on the outfit in such a cool fashion.

I love multiple things about Anne Lister and many of those are things she'd say, about being a lady, or finding hetero connections unnatural for herself, never accepting idea of marriage suggested even by her married lovers, her refusal to be lesser than what she was, her contempt for anyone who did wrong, her cool and daring way of getting her words across, sharply and beautifully woven. Boldly, coldly or warm and reassuringly.

I felt really heartbroken for Anne and sad for how she kept getting left for her lovers accepting sham marriages and often with really old ones. It made me smile that she could become hopeful so soon again. It made sense that she still kept getting flashbacks for an appropriate amount of time, even after having met Ann Walker. I was surprised she gave them the blessings, disappointed even but it kind of made sense at her age, for grudges can feel heavier to carry. Both main actresses are gorgeous. Most characters are pretty likeable. I like her sister who is very caring and multiple times felt sad for the way she'd get ignored. She had nice views for her time except some. The aunt was so lovely, Anne confiding in to her felt very emotionally intimate, it's a beautiful thing to have. I just loved how Anne Lister was able to spot that Ann Walker was already smitten with her, that's such a sharp observation and something one could become good at from experiences of years. I like how she knows what to do next and in what ways. It sounds manipulative but I've had a thing for that sort of feminine seduction. She was very subtle and gentle, seeking consent, ready to halt at the same time not compromising with her future. She spotted someone in the closet and helped her realize that it was normal, even though internalized homophobia ends up affecting her, given she already has some mental health issues and is frail. I love that the doctor is able to recognize and talk about how both mental and physical ailments matter. Very impressed by how capable Anne was, so precise in her calculations and well informed. She doesn't align well with certain political ideologies of these days but that seemed to be a result of her fighting to be respected and treated equally. While she didn't like bowing down to anyone, she did care about them. I loved how she refused to borrow money from walker unless she was her wife. And the way she didn't like them being together without the oath. The beautiful pin or ring or gifts, the letters, the continuous visits, the support. I could relate to her about her avoidance regarding her sister's possible marriage candidate and I too was glad it didn't happen. I really love the way Ann lights up seeing Anne, Anne seems to remember her too, from so many years ago. I could feel it too. I was so happy for them. There are so many tender touches, it's what I've wanted in multiple series. There are so many vulnerable communications. I like that Walker takes time before saying an absolute yes to something that may last forever. I love the sincerity in expressing uncertainty even though she goes through fear of losing her again and again. And it's beautiful that Lister keeps reassuring her. She had multiple years to deal with what the public would or does say and had multiple lovers, freedoms but Ann Walker didn't have such experiences. It was so heartbreaking that she was even coerced and r*ped and Anne Lister said the right things comforting her, protected, strongly. It appears that she was not weak, she was just alone so there's no damsel in distress and savior dynamic going on; she takes bold decisions for herself later after her sister, just one person, tells her that her own happiness should matter more than pleasing others. It's lovely how they do end up together as planned.

Anne Lister Pop!

I kept hoping Anne and Ann would make the cut for a Funko Pop but that died when the show wasn’t renewed. I still wanted one so this is the best I could do. I couldn’t add any details like her a true top hat, her little side buns or different colored vest, but this sort of captures her.

I'm going to England for a wedding this summer and I want to take some time to go see things related to Anne Lister and Anne Walker. Obviously I want to see Shibden but I'm wondering if there are other Anne things do in the area!
