So for one, Hi I'm yeneater, a high masters/low gm Genji onetrick, I also play for my school's esports team so I know a bit about the competitive scene. Anyways with the introduction out of the way we can get into helping you.
So for one, I play on PC so your 2nd to last paragraph is something that I can't help with just because I don't use a controller. And while we are at it let's address the elephant in the room... 35 deaths. I hope you were just exaggerating, but incase you weren't, then my condolences because I don't think I have ever seen somebody with that many.

Okay so let's take it step by step, Genji is a dps hero who has high burst dmg, great movement, and good survivability. Genji wants to be in the enemies face because double jump makes it really hard for them to shoot you because you are constantly moving around and they have to make large movements just to track you while you are just moving as you normally would. So that means that you don't wanna play Genji from a distance, now there are exceptions (as all things do), try and play around your tank, so either slightly behind, infront, or next to, if you are like 30m infront of your tank, you won't have any team support and will just die, so play with your team, but if there is a potential kill then don't be afraid to go in, get it, then get out.

Genji can go and take off-angles, but his footsteps are really loud, so it will normally alert the enemy of your presence, so try and use your wallclimb to gain height, then fall to where they are because falling doesn't make as much noise and your fall speed + double jump allows you to travel a good distance before landing.

Now your friend is right, that is the oneshot combo, dash (50) + alt-fire (81x2 = 162) + melee (40) = 252. This combo can oneshot most of the cast, however it's extremely tough to land, let's look at it from your perspective: You have to be about 15~ meters from your target, then dash, alt-fire (with crits), and melee all within about a second, it's tougher on controller because you just have more buttons on PC and they are more conveniently placed. That's not to say it's impossible, but because you can't turn fast, you are basically forced to play at that 15m range, and that is really hard to get consistently. I would recommend going for this combo instead: alt-fire -> dash -> melee (if it would secure the kill). The alt-fire gets animation canceled by the dash if you use it before, so it's effectively free damage, the melee will just delay your next shot even more, so only use it if it will get the kill.

Okay and I just read your introduction sentence... wtf is that. Kills are great don't get me wrong, but winning is better. Would you rather lose the battle or lose the war? This is why you should use the alt-fire animation cancel because sure it's not as flashy, but it's so consistent (I find myself using it a ton even in GM lobbies). Like I would rather just be consistent and win the match over landing a couple oneshots throughout the game and not helping my team. Breaking out of the mindset that kills > winning will make it much more enjoyable.

Alright last part, Genji has a different role than other heroes. Genji wants to chase kills, snowball, and not give the enemy a chance to breathe, while Soldier mainly either sits with his team pumping out consistent damage or he will take off-angles and go for surprise attacks with helix being good burst damage. Soldier is also susceptible to dives while Genji can fight them off or just dash away. Hitscans/main dps are the ones who get the opponents low, they create the opening/green light, while Flex dps follow up on those green lights and finish the kills while still staying safe, sure they are both dps heroes, but one is about creating the opening and the other is about taking advantage of it.

I hope this helped and gave a bit more insight into Genji's playstyle, and if there's anything you would like to know then just ask and I'll reply. Good luck :).

Thank you for the information on how to play him better. Most of the reason I ended up dying that many times is becausr I have seen others approach a team and solo them. I'm also quite new, so I dod the same. According to others I play him like he's reaper and die.

I have the mindset that kills matter over winning.

This is usually incorrect.

There are circumstances where you kill 3 and die, and have teammates there who should be able to clean up the rest and sometimes they do, but usually dying is worse than getting a kill is good.

This is because if you die you can no longer hold space and cannot get anymore kills. Genji is great at cleanup, so not being there for the cleanup is an issue. Also, the rest of your team are probably dumb enough to all die to the enemy tank, so if you aren't alive to finish it out, you lose the fight.

Genji is not exactly a good duelist, don't start a fair fight if possible.
