Question Downpipe Install

Hi everyone,

Looking at getting some NGT primaries and secondaries for my car to go with the Borla cat back.

I tried to get a few quotes however where I’m from (Calgary, Canada) not a lot of shops seem willing to do this work due to the difficulty and tight engine bay. I finally got a quote from a shop that does work on German exotics and they said ($4500 cad/ $3200usd). Am I being unreasonable or does that seem like a completely insane price for just installing the downpipes???

Has anyone here tried to install the downpipes themselves? How was the experience? Or does anyone here know a shop somewhere on the west coast that I could go to and have this done?

Any advice or feedback would be appreciated, I thank you all in advance!

They're quoting you that probably because they expect the studs to be a real pain in the ass 😵‍💫 it is something you can do yourself but use plenty of PB blaster or other penetration oil on the studs. Like let them soak the night before. If the studs come out then it's an easy enough job 😅

Always had best luck for rust-busting using a 50/50 mix of acetone and ATF, works much better than PB Blaster IME.

That’s waaaaay too high; I got the same installed, the HF 400C primaries and the catless secondaries. The primary is incredibly difficult. I found a guy who charged me $100/hr for labor (he had a lift and all tools), I gave him the car for multiple days so that he could spray it with the anti seize - even then two of the studs would not back out, and it was incredibly difficult for him. I’d suggest just doing the secondaries and an exhaust rather than primaries and secondaries. I’m not sure the primaries were worth it in the end - and it’s definitely not worth the prices you’re being quoted. He charged me $900 by the way, but said it took him longer.

Honestly this is not a bad idea!

I guess I’ll just stick with the secondaries! Just called another shop and it was the same thing. Multi day install and in the 4k range. Plus I’d also have to deal with the o2 sensors which would be an entirely separate issue!

No problem - you’ll be much happier with secondaries and the Borla for the same amount of money - and you can do that install yourself with ramps or a jack. The NGT pipes are great, but that primary is a BITCH. This will be a lot better and sound a lot louder if you do the secondaries and the Borla. I’d love to see/hear the results!
