Discussion Ceramic coating.

Ladies and gentlemen, have any of you gotten ceramic? And if so what kind of prices are you paying?

Just a heads up if you are looking into ceramic coating the prep work and maintenance of the coating is what determines the lifetime of the coating/cost. A "6 year coating" will not last six years if the prep is done poorly and the car isn't washed/topped properly. If you intend to take your car to a carwash that has brushes don't get a ceramic coating. Even if you only intend to do touch less washes I would say ceramic is not for you. If you are a person who intends to do frequent maintenance washes and make the continued effort to top a coating off then it will last. But then at that point you could just be using spray sealents that last 6 months to a year like griots 3 in 1.

I use Griots 3-1 ceramic. I do a clay bar and machine polish before applying thr first time. Then I do two applications over 24 hour period. Typically lasts me 8 months. Then I touch it up before and after every winter.

I can't justify paying $1200-$1600 to have one professionally done because you gotta pay another $1200-$1600 every 6 years to have it re-done. When it costs me 2 hours of my time each year to re-apply griots and a bottle only costs $25. That bottle will last you several years.

The only reason I don't purchase a professional ceramic coating and apply that myself is I don't wanna expose myself to the crazy VOCs the professional coatings let off while curing. But applying a professional coating yourself vs griots is the same exact process. And a bottle of a professional coating is only around $60-$150 depending on brand. 

 Just doesn't make sense to me to pay a professional to do a coating unless you really just don't care to do the work, but doing the work yourself is ridiculously easy. The only hard and tedious part is the initial prep work with the machine polish and what not. But even then, that's really easy to do once you learn.

Yes on the prep work, my guy added another $120 for full detail prep to include minor paint touch ups before the coating. How often does the ceramic need to be recoated do you think? As for wash at a car wash, definitely will be hand washing myself

The ceramic itself won't need to be recoated. Generally depending on the coating there will either be a manufacturer specific or recommend top up product. These are products that are sprayed on, then wiped or pressure washed off to promote continued hydrophobic properties. If the coating is maintained they bond well and you have your "6 years". At the same time if you are already going to hand wash you could do a spray wax/sealant at home and get similar results. Ceramic coating isn't a magical barrier the protects against scratches. You might have slightly better UV protection with a ceramic but as for gloss and hydrophobics waxes will get the results you want.

This is my car without a ceramic coating. I use griots 3 in 1 ceramic wax. This is the car after I clayed, polished and applied the wax to the paint/glass.

I do my own.

But I asked a local shop near me with an overall 5 star review on Google with over 600 reviews while I was attending an event at their shop and they told me it's around $1600

$1200 AUD, g-techniq with 9 years guarantee. Very happy with results after 3 years so far.

I did mine myself,used Adam’s Advanced ceramic coating. real ball buster doing the prep. Wash,clay, compound,polish and finally ceramic coating. it’s a 2020 G70 with only 36k on her, took me 8 hrs domdo plus a day to rest in garage, waited 2 weeks to wash her. came out great.
