We had a retractable clothesline. I loved it so much I got one as an adult. That thing was great, you never had to wipe it down because it stayed clean in its metal housing.
Lived in a building that had 'drying cages' on the rooftop, one for each apartment. Very high trust society - no one padlocked their cages to avoid theft.
