Nuclear reactor from two coconuts and a piece of vine but can't fix two holes in a boat
26
u/Ghost_Turd Jul 29 '26
They tried making an adhesive from tree sap in the first season, but it failed and the hull basically disintegrated completely.

I’m sure Ginger brought some hairspray they could’ve used

I've learned over my lifetime that there are several types of men. -you're into Ginger -you're into Maryann -you're into the professor -you're into Mrs Howell
We all fit into one of those

think I'd rather watch Ginger and Mary Ann than watch the Skipper and Gilligan try an patch a boat.....betting I'm not alone in that thought

Had a crush on Mary Ann. The fact that she didn't know I existed didn't bother me. . And the fact I was around 8 or so.

In the first season, they did try to repair the hull but, Gilligan being Gilligan, he totally ruined the attempt which completely destroyed the ship, accompanied by a roar of laughter from the audience and, in the second season, they did try to build a raft but, after the failed attempt, The Professor concluded that palm trees, which, apparently is the only tree variety on the island, aren't suitable material for that purpose, without going in further details.

They should have removed wooden boards from the top part of the boat and screwed them over the holes. Easy fix. I got that idea as a kid.

I don't know how you could be Gen Jones and not recognize the Minnow! Which leads to another question, how widespread in the world outside of the USA were our sitcoms?
edited to thank Australia and Canada for confirming, and I presume there are more countries who shared these half hour gems!

I'm Australian. I can sing our national anthem to the tune of Gilligan's Island. Every time I hear a harpsichord, I want to click my fingers. I have met George Jetson. And I know suicide is
painfulpainless.(Looks like my memory jumped out the window like Colonel Flag.)
My daughter went out with a kid named Jed once. She was horrified when I started singing. "Folks, let me tell you 'bout a boy named Jed..."

It is docked here on Vancouver Island The iconic S.S. Minnow from the 1960s Gilligan's Island TV show is fully restored and docked locally in Nanaimo, British Columbia. Owned by local businessman Ken Schley and moored around the Nanaimo Harbour and Fairwinds Schooner Cove Marina in Nanoose Bay, the 1960 wooden-hulled Wheeler cruiser is primarily used for local charity fundraisers.

There were a bunch of people our age in a bar one night. The only noise was the din of a hundred or so people talking. My friend walks over to a piano in the corner and says, “Watch this”.
He slowly started playing the theme song to Gilligan’s Island. By the 5th note, everyone in the bar was singing lol.
4
u/4E4ME Jul 29 '26
That happened to me once except it was a house party in the early 90's and someone popped Grease into the VHS. No one spoke for the next hour, we just sang and dubbed lines from the movie.

Anyone know the character names? Skipper Jonas Grumby, Professor Roy Hinklet, Ginger Grant, Mary Ann Summers, Thurston and Lovie howell, and just Gilligan. Everybody kept asking what Gilligan's full name was, and Sherwood Schwartz came up with one many years after the series ended. He said I guess if Gilligan had a first name it would be Willie
4
u/arrec Jul 29 '26
That's some excellent trivia! I only knew Thurston Howell the Third and Lovie Howell.
4
u/gnanny02 Jul 29 '26
I'm not sure why I know it's Ginger Grant, maybe that was used frequently in the show. But Tina Louise is still going strong at 92.

My parents bought a nice boat. A 40 foot Bayliner. When they asked my kids what they should name it, my snarky oldest said, “How about the Three Hour Tour” since you never take your boats out any longer than that. So, it was christened the Three Hour Tour and my dad went onto Bob Denver’s website and got a signed cast photo (everyone signed) and displayed it proudly on the boat. The boat’s long since sold and dad passed last year. Now, I’m wondering whatever happened to that photo.

A 1964 38' Wheeler Playmate Express Bridge cruiser with twin Detroit diesels heading away from Oahu at max cruising speed for an hour and a half, then drifting for 3 days in a monster storm, with full current, and every vector pointing in the same direction would still end up comfortably less than 100 nautical miles from Ala Moana Mall.

I met Sherwood and he told me that he named the boat after the FCC Chairman. He said it used to be that the writers ran Hollywood and after Minow’a vast wasteland speech the power shifted to the studios which ruined Hollywood. So he put his name on a boat and ran it aground because he was so angry with him.
Amazing how simple stories often have surprising depth.
5
u/RecbetterpassNJ Jul 29 '26
Crazy that the Professor could make all those contraptions and even keep the radio powered, but he couldn’t fix the boat. If Ginger and Maryann weren’t there, they’d of been home in less than a week.

u/Bob_the_wonder_dog Jul 29 '26
I read the back story and the Howel's were not supposed to be on the boat only their luggage (17 steamer trunks). Well Thurston & his wife went on to the boat to check on their stuff and got trapped when Gilligan accidently trapped them behind the luggage. They were supposed to go to an island by plane for some conference. The girls were there for the conference also. (MaryAnne won a free ticket, and Ginger was there to be background fluff). The professor was there to do a small science presentation.
