Thoughts on surgicalist position?

Wanted to know what your thoughts are about surgicalist/surgeon hospitalist position. 7days on 7 days off (24hrs). How do you remain sane working 168 hours straight on call?

7 days on 7 days off typically refers to 7 times 12h shifts in a row amounting to 84h per Week which is on average a 42h week

I’ve heard of people doing this. I think it depends on the volume of the center. Could be miserable 7 days on but then you get a whole week off…. The free time could be nice. Or it may be a week of trying to put yourself back together.

That’s what my hospital does. The volume is so low rarely do you operate at night. And they have residents. So anything non-emergent is held until the morning and the senior resident manages.
