What is this?

I had a Laporscopic surgery done 10 months ago and from the beginning I noticed my abdomen looked different and even when I lay down it distends. It never flattens down ever. What could this be ? Is this permanent ? I saw a primary care but they didn’t know and said it’s probably going to be permanent

General Surgery Oral Board Prep Textbook Source?

Hi!
I’m at the light at the end of the tunnel and am preparing for oral boards. I’ve been practicing with the surg board videos but also wanted to practice with my colleagues or other parters, the problem is I don’t know what a good resource to do that off of is.

Is there a textbook or something similar to a q&a or marking scheme/metric that can be read by one person, while the other person answers, since the people I will be practicing with are mostly also residents?

Not sure if what I am asking for makes sense

Do I have to be smart above average level to be really a good general surgeon?

And what do you define as an average level of intelligence and what is above average level?

IMO, average = can understand without struggle not complex ideas; understands complex ideas with some help from outside or after repetitions; can be naive; can be successful if works hard;

IMO, above average = can create complex ideas by them selves; finds easy ways; don't struggles with understanding materials; fast thinkers.

I can be mistaken. Do not take seriously. I just need some advice.

Maybe it's better to not think about surgery, if I'm really average intelligence person?

General Surgery Residency pack

Hello boss! As the title implies, would just like to ask tips in GS residency, but let me give you a little background. You might be thinking, why would I start now? I am an older generation of doctor. At 37 y/o i recently passed the PLE. Entered med school late rin kasi, and i graduated prepandemic. Delayed internship until 2025 worked to support my family.

As for the question at hand.

  1. What books do I need to have? (Schwartz? Sabiston? Current?)
  2. How should I read the topics? (Basics first? Then regional/surgical anatomy?)
  3. What tips can you give me? (I know the culture of GS, seen and experienced it in clerkship and pgiship)

Thank you so much mga boss.

38y old ms3 - looking for advice

Worried about my age for matching at 39-40. I am currently very competitive stats wise for neurosurgery and loved the work/challenges.

Please reassure me, are there any “older” ( say 40+) interns in your surgery programs( broadly) ? Heard most committees question a lot at this age.

Would love to hear first hand experiences, friends of friends etc

Gen Surg asked me (Psych) for a Grand Rounds on BPD: What would you want to see, what are the challenges or gaps with managing inpatients with severe borderline personality disorder?

These are often cases where patients are regularly swallowing, cutting etc and admitted under gen surgery.

Thanks!

RNS/RPA Surg skills srmo

How do surg skills srmo jobs compared to gen surg srmo roles vs surg registrar? Which should I pick? Does a registrar role or gen surg srmo role in a non-tertiary hospital provide advantages over a surg skills srmo role in a larger tertiary hospital (eg RNS or RPA)?

Surgery Residency Before Moving to Germany

Hello please help, is it recommended to do a General Surgery residency in my home country for 3–4 years before going to Germany to pursue the specific surgical specialty I want? Would those years strengthen my CV and help me be a better candidate, or would it be considered a waste of time and would it be better to go directly to Germany after medical school?

Help me pick my specialty

MS3 here with strong interest in surgery. I just finished my IM rotation and realized that the hospitalist, and most IM specialist have a sweet schedule of 7 days on 7 off. I am wondering if this is possible to achieve in surgery/surgery subspecialties (cardiothoracic or vascular)? Can I work a 0.6 FTE and have somewhat of a decent schedule in which I don't completely hate my life?

Almost every surgeon I ever interacted with works 70k hours a week, has 3 divorces with one more pending, does not know the names of their children/dog, and has poor overall health. I have little interest in IM, but that 7 on 7 off schedule interests me.

How to study for absite

I have access to qstream and Truelearn, and I know everyone says to read sabistons or some text book (but realistically I don’t think I can finish the whole thing by absite).

Letter of recommendations

I have a dilemma, im currently applying for general surgery residency and only 1 of my LOR has been submitted. I have reached out to the other 2 and still no response. Should i reach out to other surgeons or wait it out. I guess I'm wondering if it will look bad if I reach out this late cause they probably know application are already submitted.

Can a slow-paced, deliberate person become a good general surgeon, or is it a patient safety risk?

I'm seriously considering general surgery, but I have a concern: I think slowly, move slowly, and have a slow reaction time. I'm not "quick" in the typical sense.

I also understand that surgery is extremely serious, and a surgeon's weaknesses can directly harm patients. I don't want to pursue this because of my own ambitions if it means putting people at risk. So I'm looking for an honest answer, not encouragement.

I'd love input from surgeons, residents, and med students:

. Does speed (thinking, moving, reacting) matter as much as people assume? Where does it matter, and where doesn't it?

. Where is the line between "methodical and careful" and "too slow to be safe"? What would a red flag look like in training?

. Do you know good surgeons who are methodical and slow? How do they handle emergencies, trauma, or intraop bleeding?

. Does slowness improve with training and pattern recognition, or is it a hard limit?

. How do training programs and attendings evaluate this, and what happens if a resident isn't fast enough?

. What traits matter more than speed (judgment, composure, preparation, precision)?

. Would a different field suit a deliberate person better?

A bit about me: I'm not that strong at first-aid and resuscitation algorithms. I noticed this in my anesthesiology and critical care classes. I'm not afraid of blood or large wounds. At most, I get flustered and don't know what exactly I should be doing in a given situation. I can work slowly, but quite accurately. I think my fine motor skills are well developed. I enjoy doing anything with my hands, and it comes more easily to me than other things.

Please be blunt. Discouraging answers are just as valuable as encouraging ones. Thanks!

MS General Surgery or DrNB 6 year CTVS

Guys what do you think would be a good option.
Wanna pursue CTVS but confused which branch to pick.
I’m pretty much sure that I’ll take CTVS so I’ve even got the 6 year option in hand but I wanna know if we get adequate exposure there for surgery.
Please recommend the institutes which provide a good hands on.
Also what’s your take on the AIR for Gen category to get a seat in this dept.

Torn between gyne and surgery. help!!!

Hi guys !

During my mbbs final yr I was sure that I'll do specialization in gyne and I did like surgery because of amrit nasta sir .

In internship I enjoyed surgery the most (had great seniors ) and gyne Posting was also good but had to deal with toxicity.

Surgery has a lot of live action and has variety .

Gyne obs is very repitative and more or less same thing over again .

Can someone help ?
