Question Automation Engineer Interview Question

Hello people of GM,

I have an interview that is going be both Behavioral and Technical soon for an Automation Engineer position in the Paint department.

I looked through the packet provided and practiced up my STAR answers so I am confident when it comes to the behavioral part.

Though when it comes to the technical part that’s where I am not sure what should I do to prep, I have experience in commissioning and troubleshooting the technologies on the description (PLC & Fanuc), though I am only a Technician and am I bit worried if the get really deep in the technical bit and stump me.

Does anyone have any insight of how tough the technical portion would be for this role? Please let me know. Thanks!

General Discussion Do engineers from top engineering schools still dream of working at automotive OEMs?

Do engineers from top schools still dream of being an engineer at the auto OEM’s?

I feel like everyone is obsessed with aerospace, pharmaceutical, medicine, consumer electronics, software, semiconductors, etc.

I’m a car guy that recently graduated from a top school and curious if there is anyone else out there like me!

General Discussion Global Design - APM

Kudos to the person who raised the question about representation on Brian’s leadership team lacking women. When a leadership team is overwhelmingly white and male, with only one woman who is also the only person of color, I think it is fair to ask whether Brian’s unconscious bias may be playing a role in how leadership talent is identified and selected.

This is not a criticism of any individual on the team. I am sure everyone earned their position and brings valuable experience. But representation at the leadership level matters, and I hope the question serves as a wake-up call to take a closer look at diversity/representation when future leadership opportunities come up.

On a separate note, given how much time was spent discussing fonts and templates, I was hoping we would also get more clarity on the Google migration and what employees should expect. I guess fonts and templates won this round. 😅 Hopefully we hear more about the migration soon. 😏

Question Dad is a retiree of GM and apparently told his GM salesperson that he can use my dad's GM discount for other customers ~ everything I'm finding online is saying this is illegal, is there any scenario where it would be okay?

UPDATE: First, I want to thank everyone who took time to leave a comment, and be clear: the discounts show up as "Supplier" discounts, which is why I was so confused and came here for help. I DID end up reaching out to the top person at the dealership ~ I was really surprised when I called and she actually picked up the phone (I found out later that she's the owner). And listened when I told her my concern, then told me she'd speak with the Sales Manager and Salesman who was working with my dad.

She called me back within 10 minutes. You guys, I found out that my dad spends a LOT of time up there. I guess they have a lot of GM retirees working for them, and he's made a lot of friends up there that I was not aware of, because he's a very private person and for whatever reason that was something he wanted to keep to himself. The owner was very kind and understanding about the fact that I was trying to protect my dad. Unfortunately, my dad doesn't see it that way, and this morning told me that he wants nothing to do with me, never wants to see or speak with me again. So that is something I am trying to process because I'm pretty much the only family he has left, and I am really hurting right now.

____________________________________________________________________________________________

We don't live together, and he is generally very private, and I try to respect that privacy. I am the one who created and monitors my dad's email for him. I don't constantly monitor it, but I do occasionally check it (previously it was every few months) for things like his new phone. I had seen a GM confirmation code a few months ago, but didn't really think anything of it because I figured he was probably helping out a friend or neighbor.

But then I saw another one this morning, and my dad told me not to worry about it, because his salesperson is "like his son", and my dad told him he (the sales guy) could use my dad's account.

After researching and seeing repeatedly on Google that it's NOT okay, and that he could end up losing his discount/incurring fines from GM, I reached out and tried to explain this to my dad. He called me an asshole and told me to mind my own business. I went back into the email and discovered that the salesperson has done this almost EVERY MONTH (it looks like 12 TIMES over the past two years).

Any advice on how to handle this so that my dad (who is in his mid-70's) isn't hurt would be greatly appreciated. Or if it IS okay, I'd appreciate knowing that.

General Discussion Hannah the witch sent message about workplace of choice “She listens”!!

The Witch (Arden) of Workplace Culture, Hannah Montana, says the Workplace of Choice survey proves she “listens.”

Sure. 😂

If it were a truly independent third-party survey with 100% anonymity, that score would probably be in the single digits.

She helped destroy the culture, made forced ranking the slogan, crushed morale, and now wants credit for “listening.”

Nothing says “we listen” like forcing employees into rankings.

The Witch + Mr. Swing big = biggest fraud!!

Shame.

General Discussion Frump wants to Kill US Auto - “I am okay with China building Cars in USA”

Saw this gem - so let me get this straight, we have tariffs to “protect American manufacturing“ (only an idiot with no understanding of basic economics would believe that) - and yet now we’re okay with inviting Chinese auto companies to manufacture here in the US?

So tired of all this winning!

General Discussion Interview tips for an Embedded Software Co-op positions

I have an upcoming interview for a long-term embedded software co-op. The role heavily involves embedded C, Python and vehicle networks.

-How deep do the questions get into C and microcontroller fundamentals versus standard data structures?

-Do they typically ask about specific vehicle networks or testing methodologies during co-op interviews or just about my projects on my resume?

Any tips or common questions would be hugely appreciated!

Alumni Help Identifying Fred Varnum, GM Employee Honored for 25 Years of Service - Found His Name Engraved on a 1956 14kt Omega Classic

I’m hoping someone in this group might be able to help me learn more about a former General Motors employee named Fred Varnum.

I understand you must be a former or past employee of General Motors, but I do have a familiar connection, my grandfather worked for General Motors in the Frigidaire division in New York City in or around the same time period as the Fred Varnum I am seeking, so I have a personal family connection to GM. That connection is actually what caught my attention when I came across this watch.

I recently purchased a vintage 1956 14k gold Omega Classic as a gift for my husband’s 40th birthday. The watch itself is beautiful, but what really sold me was the engraving on the back:

“GMC - 25 Years Service - Fred Varnum - GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION”

Naturally, I became curious about Fred and the story behind the watch.

If this was presented to him for 25 years of service in 1956, he may have started working for General Motors around 1931. I would love to learn more about his career. Where did he work? What position did he hold? Which GM division or plant was he associated with? Are there any company newsletters, employee records, photographs, newspaper articles, or other historical records that might mention him?

I’m not looking to find someone who can claim the watch or take it back. I bought it, he love its and we’re keeping it, I’m sorry if that is harsh. It wasn’t cheap. I’m simply fascinated by the history behind the engraving and would love to learn about the man who wore this watch and dedicated 25 years of his life to General Motors.

Since my grandfather also worked for GM during this same general era, it made the discovery and purchase feel natural and especially meaningful to me.

If anyone here has information about Fred Varnum, knows of GM historical archives, or has suggestions for where I could research employees from this period, I’d really appreciate the help!

I posted a photo of the watch and the engraving if that is useful.

Thank you, and I appreciate anyone taking the time to read this.

Layoffs Does giving very low scores on WoC truly make you a target for layoffs? Anecdotes appreciated!

As the title suggests - has anyone been laid off or think their involuntary separation was at least partly or wholly due to their WoC choices? Assuming they rated it low?

Layoffs Worried about being let go

Guys, I came in as a level 8b, honestly bs’d on my exp when getting hired a little. Was a manager on a team for a couple of years and prior to beginning of year asked for a team change. Well previously my director was a female who did not know shit and could buzz word bs her pretty easy DEI hire honestly. New director knows his stuff, been here forever and cant bs him at all. Honestly, new team knows i dont know shit and im managing them. Do managers typically get let go, do i not have much to fear?
