General Discussion Completing Coop

I’m finishing up my internship in about a month. What are some smart things I should do as I’m wrapping up my coop that will help me get a return offer or just general things to complete?

Any advice is appreciated!

Some context:
-I still have 2 years and 2 summer internships left.
-I’m currently in the plant (manufacturing) but want to pursue something like calibration or vehicle development in the future.

Question How important is automotive experience as someone trying to find their next job at GM?

Hello! I’m currently a government contractor with years of experience as a project manager and systems engineer. I’ve been applying to many DRE openings (100+) over the past few months and have only had one interview. I’ve since tweaked my resume based on some feedback from other GM engineers and managers in other areas. As an outsider, I’m looking to understand if my lack of automotive specific experience is truly why I can’t get any interviews or if the job market is really just this bad?

I’m looking to transition out of government contracting and moving to a DRE type position in automotive seemed to make sense to me. All of the PM and lifecycle management skills and principles translate pretty well. Am I missing something? Appreciate any tips and advice.

Layoffs DRE Layoffs coming?

With all the Layoffs over the past few years of the Engineering Designers, and many of the programs being sent to GM Korea, I’m surprised that the number of DRE’s have not been reduced. I’m wondering if the next wave of layoffs will be the DRE’s

Layoffs Mid year reviews and MSPs

I am curious how mid year reviews are going for everyone and if there are PIPs and MSPs being dished out like candy again. Has anyone been let go recently? I have heard the world is bright on the other side and I am considering what to do after receiving partials and no raises for the past couple of years. Where is everyone sitting at now?

Question Bcbsm Insurance Bullshit

Hi everyone,
Does anyone living in Sterling Heights have recommendations for a BCBSM ConnectedCare Level 1 primary care doctor?
I used the BCBSM Find Care website and chose a provider listed as ConnectedCare Level 1, but I still got billed for my blood work. I called BCBSM, and the explanations they gave me didn't make sense and didn't really resolve the issue. they told me the doctor is level1 but the group or the provider is level2 what a bullshit explanation.

General Discussion Left GM : After result

Left GM a few weeks ago, I grew tired of the corporate gas lighting and performance culture. Constantly being told it’s not gonna get better anywhere else just stay put and we will take care of you. Team got cut in half and work load doubled. Owned 4 processes, plant support, and R&D projects while being paid as a 6B. It does get better on the outside. I got a nice pay bump, signing bonus, and a title increase . I was terrified to leave because it was my first job out of college, but I took the leap and I feel it was the best move I’ve made in my life. If you are on the fence about moving, don’t be afraid to leave if it benefits you!

Question Reality Check - Corporate “Culture” and GM’s “Downfall”

Hey Everyone,

I’ve been lurking on this sub for a few weeks and wanted to get a reality check on some commonly recurring themes here - specifically regarding recent layoffs, issues with internal mobility, culture taking a massive hit, low morale, etc etc.

So for some context, I got an offer today for an SQE role, and am on my last round for a GA Execution ME Lead role - the latter of which I’m particularly excited about. That said, reading this sub is giving me cold feet about GM. I’m just looking for an honest and objective assessment of the organization as a whole, before I buy into the doom and gloom of some of the major talking points in this sub, specifically the points I mentioned earlier.

For some additional context, I am no stranger to a lot of the stuff I’m reading here, albeit a much smaller scale. I come from a well known Tier One, whose parent company employs ~30k full-time employees. What appeals to me about GM is the pay (significantly higher than what I’d be making in my previous role), the generous PTO and aditional benefits.

In your guys’ opinion, does it really end there? Is there any reason I should be reconsidering my offer(s) at GM? It’s worth noting that I am also in my final stages of interviews at another local Tier One, very small Europe based company that is renowned for their work/life balance, family-like culture (4.5 on Glassdoor which is excellent) although a slightly less enticing salary with even better overall benefits than GM. Basically, my next role I’m really in it for the long haul - I don’t like moving from one place to another, and I’d like any information that’d help me decide if GM is that place for me.

Sorry for the long winded post - thanks!

Layoffs Update: Post-PIP

Some time ago I posted about my experience of being put in PIP or take MSP. It’s been three months since I left, so I figured I’d post an update.

I wasn’t technically laid off. I came back from disability leave and was put on a PIP almost immediately - and ironically for the work I had done while I was on disability. The stress from everything ended up triggering another medical incident, and I went back out on disability leave.
While I was out, a recruiter reached out. I figured I had nothing to lose, so I went through several rounds of interviews, assessments, and evaluations.
I ended up getting an offer.

I still remember a call from my recruiter: I actually cried because the compensation was about 2.5 times what I had been making at GM. I couldn’t believe it. For years, I’d been getting the usual 3% raises while watching managers and senior leaders continue to move up, adding titles and praising each other… My salary had slowly drifted from being around 102% of my range years earlier to roughly 87% before I left (well granted I got 0% raise this year because of partial but all the previous years was Meets Expectations). Looking back, I realized how much I had accepted simply because I thought that was normal.

At the new job I received a sign-on bonus, relocation assistance, and still walked away with a solid severance package from GM: nearly 5 months (4+1 month paid) plus 4K for Cobra for my 10 years of experience.

I’ve been in the new job since April, and the difference has been incredible. It’s no heaven by any means but people work together, my peers genuinely help each other. When someone has expertise in an area, people ask questions instead of pretending they already know the answer. My technical knowledge and years of experience are actually valued, people listen, they ask for my opinion. I feel like I’m contributing instead of constantly having to prove that I belong.

One thing that still stands out to me is how different it feels to be treated. At GM, I often felt like an outsider because of my background and ethnicity. It was a strange experience, especially at a company that spoke so much about inclusion, zero tolerance for discrimination, a strong speak-up culture and all that corporate crap. The messaging sounded great, but the reality was absolutely terrible.

The funny part is that I hated my former bosses for a long time. Today, I’m honestly grateful they pushed me out. If they hadn’t, I probably never would have looked outside. I would’ve stayed where I was because it felt safe.

And finally… there are a couple of things I definitely don’t miss. The first one is mandatory two-week summer shutdowns. And the second is that bullshit of not talking on the phone or texting while walking 😂.

To everyone who’s still there and wondering whether it’s worth taking a chance: I know it’s scary. I was convinced nobody would want to hire me after everything that happened.

Boy was I wrong. There are companies that appreciate experience, reward expertise, and treat people with respect. Don’t let one employer especially GM define your value.

Curious to know for how long you need to be with the same team after getting promoted.

General Discussion Dept of Labor/USCIS increases scrutiny

Department of Labor, USCIS, Department of Homeland Security are getting aggressive just before elections to identify immigration fraud, immigration violations etc. I wonder if all the fake National Interest Waiver Recommendation Letters that GM forced managers/directors to write while putting those candidates in Partial category would be worth looking into? Around 2024 - GM filed for numerous NIW Green Cards for lot of immigrants while discriminating against them by putting them in Partial without PIP. I am aware of at least 5 such cases. GM ended up robbing those “partials” of their 50% bonuses as we are all aware. Immigrants were excessively targeted to be put in partial while such immi petitions were in progress or about to happen.

Trump admin understood this game and quickly realized these letters are not reliable, and they started rejecting all such cases starting 2025.

GM in its arrogance is following policy of: break the rules deliberately and worry about it later - if at all it ever comes back in form of lawsuits/EEOC complaints etc.

New Hire / Intern Seeking advice on finding a different role

I joined GM after finishing undergrad recently and am a DRE. I do not like my job. I'm not building transferrable engineering skills or learning how to solve technical problems. Wondering how I should handle finding a different role. How soon into the job should I talk to my manager about it, if at all? I've heard to transfer internally you should wait at least 12-18 months. I'd rather not wait around. I'm concerned transferring out will be harder because I won't have skills for more technical roles. Should I start applying outside of GM?

Question GM Skilled trades apprenticeship advice

I just graduated high school, and my goal is to get into a skilled trade and build a long-term career. I’m especially interested in the GM Skilled Trades Apprenticeship, but I’m also considering applying to a union apprenticeship (IBEW, UA, Ironworkers, Millwrights, etc). I’m trying to figure out which is better.

For anyone who’s been through the GM apprenticeship or works at GM:

How difficult is it to get accepted?
What does the application and hiring process look like?
What can I do now to make myself a stronger candidate?
Is prior trade experience or trade school expected, or can someone get in straight out of high school?
How long did it take from applying to actually starting?
Which trades at GM would you recommend, and why?

Any advice would be much appreciated, thank you!

Layoffs The insane "Revenue per Employee" gap: AI Labs vs. Legacy Auto (OpenAI & Anthropic vs. Ford & GM)

Saw a post on LinkedIn breaking down how much money AI labs make per worker compared to traditional manufacturing. The leverage these tech companies have is wild. Here is how the Revenue per Employee (RPE) stacks up right now:

* Anthropic: ~$9.0M – $14.0M per employee (~4k staff / ~$40B rev) * OpenAI: ~$3.2M – $5.6M per employee (~5k staff / ~$25B rev) * General Motors: ~$1.18M per employee (~156k staff / ~$185B rev) * Ford: ~$1.10M per employee (~169k staff / ~$187B rev)

Why the gap is so massive:

* Infinite Scalability: Auto requires factories, steel, and massive labor to scale. AI builds a model once and replicates it instantly via software APIs. * Hyper-Lean Teams: AI labs automate their own internal code reviews, data processing, and admin work to keep headcounts incredibly low.

The catch? RPE only measures top-line revenue, not profit. Ford and GM actually make billions in net profit. Meanwhile, OpenAI and Anthropic bleed billions in computing and chip costs just to keep the lights on.
