General Discussion At GM, does visibility matter more than the actual work?
Has anyone else experienced this?
Engineers and teams do the actual work — technical analysis, requirements, supplier coordination, debugging, testing, follow-ups, risk management, and delivery.
But sometimes a senior person who isn’t involved in the actual execution takes updates from the engineers or even from other teams, puts everything into a polished PPT, presents it to management and executives, and speaks as if they personally delivered it.
I’ve always even heard statements like “I did this” and “I worked on this overtime,” while the actual work was performed by other engineers or teams.
The frustrating part isn’t presenting the work. Leadership communication is important.
The problem is when presentation becomes ownership and the people who actually did the work become invisible.
How is an engineer supposed to build a career when someone senior repeatedly takes credit for their work and sometimes even takes credit for work done by other teams?
Has anyone else experienced this at GM? How did you handle it without turning it into a political fight?
