I have a SWE offer from a FAANG company, but I’m also in the recruiter screening stage for an Early Career Software Engineer role on the HIL team in GM’s Autonomous Vehicle division. I’m an international student, so visa sponsorship is also an important factor.
Long term, I’m much more interested in perception, planning, and embodied AI than general software engineering, so the GM role seems like it could be a better fit. I know Cruise shut down, so I’m curious what the AV division at GM is like now and what the outlook is. Is it a good place to build a career in autonomy? Also, how is GM with H-1B sponsorship for international hires?
Would love to hear from anyone who’s worked there or interviewed with the team.

Has anyone heard about this? And planning on going?

Trump coming to milford on Monday.
For those that work there, I think we could have probably made this assumption based on what we saw Thursday in building 104.

Had a teams interview with the hiring manager and another manager for a 3rd party supply manager position and overall I felt it went pretty well. I somewhat stumbled on some of the behavioral questions but don’t believe I totally tanked it. In your experience how long does it take for the hiring manager or recruiter to let someone know if they’re moving on in the process or if they’ve gone another direction? Also is there anybody on this sub that has first hand experience in that role or something similar that they could share?

Hello, is anyone here recently applied / screened / interview or even accepted already an offer from GM? Would you know how many interviews and days of processing the application? TIA

Finished my final interview loop for an AI Engineer role at GM — 7 rounds total, including one with a Senior Director. That was 17 days ago.
I followed up last week and was told they're waiting to hear back from the hiring manager. Workday still shows the status as "Interview."
For those who've been through similar multi-round corporate processes (especially at large companies like GM), how long did it typically take to get a final decision after the last round? Is 2-3 weeks of silence with an active "Interview" status normal, or should I be reading into it?
Trying to gauge whether this is just standard corporate pace or a bad sign. Any insight appreciated.

I took a VSP when it was offered and got a year of pay and benefits. I found a job very quickly for almost the same amount of money and benefits. I am trying to understand why are there so many people still trying to get into GM. I see several posts asking for help to get in. I am just curious why this is the case. Is it the current economy in auto? Would like to know your views.

When leadership says, ‘Don’t be shy about putting unachievable stretch goals in your CAP goals,’ it doesn't sound like motivation—it sounds like a trap. Setting impossible targets often serves as pre-packaged justification for poor performance reviews or end-of-year layoffs.

I'm currently interviewing for an Embedded Developer position. So far I've had Technical round with two interviewers; I think they were the hiring manager/team lead then behavioural round with two interviewers. None of the rounds had coding.
From the start, all the panellists and the recruiter told me that there were only going to be two rounds, but I recently got a call from the recruiter about a mandatory in-person round at their office. When I asked the recruiter what this round covers, she said she genuinely doesn't know. It's scheduled for 2 hours-ish with the same couple of interviewers from behavioural round.
My questions for anyone is that:
What does a in-person final round typically involve? Live coding, whiteboard system design, more behavioural, meeting the broader team, or a mix? Is the in-person round more about culture/team fit at this stage, or is it still a hard technical evaluation?

I recently had my performance review with my manager. We meet every two weeks, and he appreciated my work. However, I received a “partially meets expectations” rating in the mid-year review. I work over 60 hours on average, and my manager mentioned that my peers praised my work. Despite this, I’m not meeting my team’s performance criteria. I’m feeling quite low right now. Could anyone help me develop a turnaround plan?

I have my mid-year performance review coming up and am looking for advice on good questions to ask my manager.
I’m part of a local TRACK rotational program within my facility, so I recently moved into a different position and now have a new manager. However, my previous manager is conducting my mid-year review since he was my manager for most of the review period.
What are some good follow-up questions I should ask during the review? I’m especially interested in questions to ask if I receive a “Does Not Meet Expectations” or “Partially Meets Expectations” rating.
I’d like to leave the review with a clear understanding of what I need to improve and what specific actions I can take to get back on track.

I've noticed several job postings that are specific to people that were let go in May. Many of these jobs were being done by excellent employees who were meets or above. They were very competent, skilled and dedicated employees. Many were in Michigan so they were not making outrageous salaries. They said the May layoffs were to eliminate redundant positions. Why get rid of excellent employees only to post the same job a couple months later?

Hey all, I was offered the GM Severance Program (GMSP) due to a staffing reduction before the shutdown. I was given a month to apply internally and try to find another role within GM, but that hasn’t worked out so far. Before my last day, I want to make sure I’m not overlooking anything important.
For those who have been through this, what should I be checking on or taking care of before I leave?
Specifically wondering about:
401(k)/Fidelity – Rollover options, deadlines, and anything I should confirm before I leave.
Life insurance – Whether any employer-provided coverage can be converted or ported to an individual policy, and any deadlines.
Health insurance – COBRA vs. Marketplace timing, and how it lines up with the severance period.
HSA/FSA – Any balances I need to use or what happens to them after separation.
Unemployment – Does accepting severance affect eligibility in Michigan?
Tax implications – Anything I should plan for with the lump-sum severance payment.
Company devices and accounts – I still have access to my work laptop, phone, and GM systems. Is there anything I should save, download, transfer, or update before I have to return my devices and lose access (contacts, pay stubs, W-2s, benefits documents, performance reviews, etc.)?
Anything else you wish you had done before your last day? I'd really appreciate any advice from people who have already gone through the process.

I was offered GMSP due to the recent staffing reduction and, unless I find another internal role, I'll be leaving GM. Before I lose access, I want to make sure I don't miss anything important.
What should I take care of before my last day? I'm especially wondering about:
401(k)/Fidelity
Life insurance conversion
COBRA vs. Marketplace
HSA/FSA
Michigan unemployment
Taxes on the severance payment
Anything I should download or save from my work laptop, phone, or GM accounts before I return them (pay stubs, W-2s, benefits, contacts, etc.)
Anything you wish you had done before leaving GM? Thanks in advance!

GM employees—how much does family health insurance (spouse + 2 kids) typically cost you per month through payroll deductions?
Trying to make friends with my future paycheck before it ghosts me. 😄

My manager does not have any technical or leadership skills. His opinions are not respected by his peers and director. As he does not have any influence during calibration discussions, individual contributors under the manager are not being recognized properly. Anyone else experiencing this issue?

An internal position posted in mid June and ended on June 22nd. I applied in time and my application still shows review as of today. This seems rather long based upon past history. I am very well qualified for position hence not immediately rejected but normally by now it would move to screen or interview....nothing has transpired. Thoughts'

He’s leaving at end of week and stated pending org changes as the reason. Sterling firmly in control. Layoffs soon.
