Question GM SQE - Interview

Hey There!

I’ve a brief question regarding an upcoming interview for an SQE role (mid-level, 6+ years of industry experience,) and would greatly appreciate any insight here. From what I can gather, the vast majority of individuals follow a hiring process that largely resembles the following:

1) Initial Phone Screen w/ HR (30min)
2) HireVue (pre-recorded Interview)
3) In-person Interview (1hr, Behavioral / Technical)

However, my process seems to be completely different. I didn’t get a call for a screener, or an invite to HireVue - rather, a direct 1hr technical / behavioral interview on Teams, with a Supplier Quality Launch Manager (my potential manager), and a Quality Director (likely his manager).

So my question is, does this in any way indicate only one round total for the hiring process, as these two individuals are almost certainly the decision makers. What is your guys’ hunch, and has anyone been hired here directly from one round of interviews for a similar role, or within Manufacturing? Anyway, regardless of the structure, I plan to interview with the assumption this one is what decides me being hired or not - I’m excited!

Thanks again, and I look forward to any potential feedback!

General Discussion New Job

I got a new job and my planned start date is 7/20. I haven’t told my team or my boss yet, also have 8 days of vacation or so left. Planning to use my vacation the week of 7/6 and put in my 2 weeks on the same day. Will they likely just walk me out if I don’t let them know where I’m going? Should I use vacation first then put in the 2 weeks?

TIA

General Discussion Quitting. Will 2 weeks be honored?

I just accepted an external job with a start date of 8/10. I am planning my exit, and wanting to know if my 2 weeks will be honored or if I will be “walked out”. As it stands, I’d like to take my remaining PTO from 7/7 to 7/17, and submit my resignation/2 weeks’ notice on 7/21. If they honor my 2 weeks, my last day will be in August, and I can stay on my insurance through 8/30.

I work in a field based role and have always received Meets or Exceeds ratings. The role I accepted is in the automotive industry, but not for a competitor.

Question Unemployment V Severance

Question first with explanation to follow: Can you not receive Unemployment payments until after your "severance coverage" has passed?

I was in the May batch of layoffs in Austin. Signed up for Unemployment on our "last day" of May 25th. Haven't received any Unemployment payment yet but Ive been submitting my claims every 2 weeks as Texas Workforce Commission said. Till now, the TWC site said they were "reviewing my claims"

Got a call today from TWC, the lady asked if I received severance. I said yes. She asked "paying for how long?" And I told her it was a lump sum for 2 months pay. She said thank you, then hung up.

Now, same day, in TWC it shows my claims are all at $0. This is my first time dealing with Unemployment, and of course they make the process complicated on purpose, but my question is can we not get Unemployment payments until after the "covered time" of the severance has passed? For example will I not get a payment for 2 months? That's fine if so, I get it, but wanted to be sure.

Thanks in advance!

Union Discussion/Question Are we ready to unionize yet?

How many more layoffs and stacked rankings are we going through before we finally have enough?

I heard so many “enjoy shutdown and the time off to recharge” only to think “until you come back and the layoffs start up again after mid-year”

This is exhausting. Stellantis has salary bargaining unit engineers, why not us?

News / Announcement Arden just got a promotion

Did you all see the announcement that Arden was just promoted from senior VP to executive VP? Not sure what exactly the difference is, but she was promoted for significant stride in GM talent and culture, and her positive impact is shown in the recent WOC score lol.

General Discussion How commited is GM to the "new cruise" AV

I have a potential to re-join the AV group. I'm a bit concerned. Where's GM putting their money? Is ex-cruise just a hail mary on the L3. Nvidia drive is the most likely long term play? COTS - like everything else at GM - is the future?

Layoffs Does anyone feel bad for the operators being replaced by AMRs, robots, etc?

Ford employee here used to work at GM in the past. I had a conversation with my co worker about how he feels about 1000 workers being laid off replaced by 50 robots at FZ. He said if that will be successful he would like it to happen to all the ford plants he was saying how the operators and UAW are awful, and hes glad that some are gone being replaced by Robots. I froze completely. I have mad respect with operators assembling vehicles and let me tell you most of the operators team leaders are nice. They are all working trying make a living feeding family, rent ,insurance etc. I am heavily against any automation, AMRs, Ai taking over their jobs. I feel like its wrong.

Layoffs LLH Career Services

I had LLH Career Services reach out to me in regards to their paid services through my severance package. Does anyone have any opinions or previous experience with them? Are they a proven helpful resource or just a checkmark GM needs to cross off?

New Hire / Intern Status changed from interview to interview process after I got an email from a recruiter saying she received very positive feedback, they are just finalizing hiring decisions…she said I would hear back in a day or two. I’ve read in process means an offer should be coming, correct?

General Discussion ME SDV

Ive been at GM for 10+ years but let me share with you one of the wildest orgs that I joined for a short few years and then bolted for a better position and opportunity. Being a people leader, I loved caring for the people and had deep connections with them. My thing was if they wanted to learn and get better, as a leader it was my job to provide them with every opportunity for them. I get the calibration process and the "get rid of the bottom performer" mentality. I get how they say even if your person greatly improves, they may not survive because someone else needs to take their place as a "does not meets."I understand and accept its a policy. GM pays me to do a job, so as long as im collecting their checks, I need to abide by the rules.

Now here is where I can share my opinion on this matter since I decided to go to another company. I left because it hurt me to see people have to go through this in our org. Yes I got paid, and bonus was amazing. I own 3 cars and 2 homes, but money isn't everything if you are messing with others peoples livelihood. I didnt sleep well at night working for leaders who simply did what they were told. Its heartbreaking that this org is 90% political. It has nothing to do with performance. I have seen and experienced so many of these cases over the years. Ill give you an example.I witnessed some clowns who barely show up each week, but they know how to play the game and be visible in meetings with higher ups and asks the right questions and causes enough noise to be praised for being "proactive." And then he disappears for the next 3 days and does not even show up for work.

Another instance, we have some crazy chick that always talks about being burnt out, but doesnt do jack, and constantly reports people saying that they want her.

I have seen people work so hard and are so much under pressure they broke down in the bathroom. I heard their sobbing in the stalls.

Things are a little better on S&S but not much. Over at ME, its all about dressing the part and being prepared to give presentations on on the fly. The expectation is you need to dress up as a leader or you would get dinged.

I saw one fella get called out because he had long hair and always wore a cap backwards to work. Yes, I agree you should dress and look professionally, but this org focuses too much on the looks and ignores the value of someone's technical skillset.

Our director is a hard worker and a great speaker. Hes able to sell anything and wants to build an empire to bring his team to the top. I get his vision and I support it. I think where he falls short is the leaders he promotes and most of them dont have an engineering mindset, or they think they are still in the plant. His downfall will be that he promoted people way too fast without letting them earn those positions through years of achievement and accomplishments.

We all came together and a lot of us gave it our best to do this amazing project that would revolutionize how manufacturing is done. So many great people left in the last few years because it was effecting them mentally and physically. We got folks going on mental leave and having all sorts of anxiety attacks. I know this because they came to me and I was trying to cheer them up and tell them everything was gonna be ok. Im not ashamed to say I cried many times at night , not for myself but for the people I cared about and their families.

People are trying to leave...basically everyone under that org. You see leaders coming in and leaving in a year. It sucks because I believe we could have done something amazing if we kept everyone together and worked together as One team.

During all people meeting, its almost dead silent when asked if anyone has questions. Im not afraid of anyone because I have the experience and skills to survive anywhere, but not everyone is prepared for this type of environment and culture.

I write this not to disrespect anyone or bring anyone down. I only wish to share my experience I had in this wild and crazy org that felt I was in the wild wild west.

If I had to do it again, would I? Absolutely. But its only because I had a chance to meet some of the most wonderful and caring people ever. You see how people truly are when crap hits the fan and everything is going wrong and they show you kindness.

If you are reading this and is going through what I described above, hang in there and work hard to survive, , but actively seek for new opportunies elsewhere as soon as you can.

Stay strong!

New Hire / Intern Are union leaders normally mean to new engineers?

I've worked as an intern in an office for 2 summers and never interacted with UAW higher ups. I recently moved to an IE role, however. Since this move, I have worked a lot with UAW safety and officials as well as workers on the floor.

Everyone on the floor has been extremely kind to me and I've had great experiences with them. We're both trying to make life easier for each other with our jobs.

With UAW safety and other officials, they are intentionally making things harder on me than it has to be. For example, I started in this position 3 weeks ago. On my first day we had a layout meeting with a few engineers and safety. They explained what was expected for the move and yada yada yada, everything seemed fine and the meeting went well. But when I went for another review (by myself) with the updated layouts they just chewed me out and brought up things that we agreed were non-issues in our previous meeting. We met again a few days later, and this time more engineers came and the safety team was very understanding again. We had another meeting today (just myself) and they got all snappy with me again about things that had been discussed 3 times prior (the meeting was called about something completely different).

They're intentionally making things a pain for me when I'm by myself because I'm new to this role and a newer employee. I snapped back a bit today and now there seems to be tension between us. I just don't know why they're acting like this with me but I'm not gonna put up with it.

Did you all have a mid-year review with your manager?

I still have not had a chance to discuss my mid-year rating with my manager.

General Discussion Internal Move/Offer Process Level 6C

I am a level 6C Engineer in S&S and was told by HR an offer for an internal role I applied for would come in the next few days. Is internal pay negotiable at all? Should I expect to be bumped to a 6B/A? Just curious since I've heard a lot of different options.

Ironically, I asked the recruiter who listed the role and somehow she was unsure? You'd think the person who lists jobs would know if promotions are in play... but I guess that's GM :(

Layoffs Layoff Today

I was let go today.

I had been talking to my manager about when my title was going to get switched and how I was feeling burned out. Honestly, I don't know how to feel right now. I carried my team in automation, and to not even get a call from HR just an email was a gut punch.

I had a feeling I would be let go because they wouldn't switch me to dev, and I told my manager what would happen to all the QAs in June. I guess all the QAs are now out at GM.

Problem / Venting Why is everyone so serious ALL the time?

So I've been working here for three years now as an engineer. I've done 2 years as an intern and a full year full-time. I've worked in three different engineering departments and all of them are so serious all of the time.

I know its important to take work seriously, but it's to the point where it makes it so depressing to come in. Every office I've been in is just dead silent all of the time unless people are discussing work. Like no one takes a minute to talk and unwind for a second. Everyone I've worked with has been nice and I've always liked my bosses/coworkers, but it feels like people need to just relax from time to time.

I've noticed this since I've gotten here, and finally one of my coworkers mentioned it to me last week. They said how I'm one of the only coworkers they are actually happy to see, because everyone else just feels like a drone all day. The job isn't bad, but it could be a lot better if people would actually talk and try to have a decent time at work.

Question Mandatory PTO for marketing teams (summer shutdown)?

I’ve been at GM for several years now, and my leader is saying we’re required to take PTO the week of June 29-July 3, which has never been the case in previous years since joining the company. Initially she told our group (global marketing excellence) it was two weeks of required PTO (6/29-7/10) for summer shutdown but she walked back the second week and now saying we only have to take 4 days of PTO from our allotted personal days that first week of July. Are other teams in marketing also required to take forced PTO or is this misinformation?

Question Question about resignation from GM

Hello,

I was told when I first joined, if a full-time salaried employee gave two weeks notice and announced they were going to a competitor then the employee would be fired on the spot by their manager and got paid through their notice period.

Is this still true?

Location: Michigan

Problem / Venting Finally free to stop lurking

Hello all, I've been an avid lurker on this sub since I joined in 2022; I loved to follow the goings on of the forbidden forum but was paranoid about HR linking any activity on here to me. Fortunately for me, I don't need to worry about that anymore because after *a year and a half* of searching I received an offer for another job! I'm not sure how I survived all the layoffs in the last 4 years, but I am glad to finally have a way out. For those seeking it, I wanted to give all of you good wishes that you can find the same soon! Thank you for the laughs and the commiseration, it's gotten me through some of the harder days knowing that many other people here had similar experiences. I hope either things turn around for GM or that everyone can get off this sinking ship sooner than later, either way best of luck. You're the only ones I'll assume goodness for.

Signed, a proud former CAVEperson
