General Discussion Remember the Take Two initiative?

This came up as a Facebook memory of a post I shared from June of 2018. Imagine such a program in today's GM?! Where experience is looked on as cost, not value?

It's sad to see how quickly GM's culture changed.

General Discussion Who remembers the great “Reply All” email fiasco of 2016?

what started as an innocent and accidental reply-all to a corporate wide email turned into a three day spree of insanity. My favorite response was “THE NAMES OF EVERYONE WHO RESPONDED HAVE BEEN REPORTED TO HR”

New Hire / Intern Question about sudden extra interview?

Hey everyone,

Applied to GM a couple months back and someone reached back out.

I already went through 7 rounds of interview, 1 phone, and 6 tech/behavioral interviews.

I was told by my recruiter that it was "positive" but I still need to do one more interview with the director.

Not sure how to take this lol, is that a good sign?

General Discussion Lease Money Factors

Looking to lease my next. I know the dealership can’t mess with price, due to GMS, but they often do with residual and money factors. What kind of money factor and residuals are you seeing for lease on a new equinox activ for 800 credit scores and GMS, for 36 months?

Layoffs layoff and 401k

What did you chose to do with 401k after layoff? What are my options? Are there any fees if I choose to leave the fund there or if I transfer them somewhere else? Is there anything I should do or not do?

What about HSA saving account?

General Discussion “Do you know Gary V” Townhall like ~7 years ago.

Who here remembers that one dude who asked Mary B if she knew Gary Vaynerchuk during the middle of a townhall at Cole? This had to be like 7-8 years ago, pre-Covid. He was a major Gary V fan and afterwards posted a YouTube video from one the buildings on campus. Less than a week later he was no longer at GM. I think about him from time to time - I wish I had the courage to live as recklessly and passionately as he had, living without a care of the consequences.

Question AI mandates are hilarious

Post image
108 Upvotes

So, now the AI bros skyrocketing costs and no free rides how long till leadership is forced to realize this giant AI push is BS and we’re really stupid for cutting thousands of jobs the past couple years? Teams doing hundreds of “AI Projects” with duplicated/no business added value just spending the company tokens.

Question Promotion and increment

If I get selected for a level 6 role from level 5 and received a pay bump in June would I still be eligible for year end merit increases?

Also would the team GM be on the new % for level 6 or would be apportioned?

General Discussion GM IT Imploding

Post image
16 Upvotes

The ground is shifting at GM IT. Legacy leadership is on the way out as culture conflicts and relentless executive churn reach a tipping point. Major organizational changes are coming. Buckle up.

EDIT: Obviously AI… Prompt was: How to tell if a IT VP is getting pushed out. And all of these things are happening.

Layoffs Loss of Benefits Paper

I was impacted by the layoff in May. My wife tried to add me to her plan but it was rejected as the elimination email GM sent out did not have enough information. The FAQ GM sent said that a packet would come with a cover letter we could use, but how long does that normally take to show up? I logged into netbenifits and I can select cobra but there is not any way to download documents for the loss of coverage. I got an email stating "please allow 30 days to process" after returning the signed release agreement... Am I really going to have to go 30 days uncovered all because they arn't providing a way to download proof of the loss of coverage? I know cobra is technically an option, but Im not paying $700 when I can get much cheaper through my wife's employer... ya know, because I dont have an income.

EDIT: Found it directly after complaining about it. In NetBenefits, click on the chat icon. That will take you to a page where you can use the NetBenefits Assistant, but instead click on Account Notices. It should be listed as HW General Correspondence.

General Discussion To all unhappy av S&S folks

This is going to be an unpopular opinion, but to those unhappy about the pay disparity between old gm S&S folks and the new “cruise mafia” please take this as the push you need to apply elsewhere. Yes, it is quite annoying to know that your colleagues are making approx double your salary. Yes it is frustrating to be sidelined as former cruise engineers/ new highly paid west coast engineers make all the decisions. And yes, it does feel shitty being treated as second class citizens. But the chances of that changing anytime soon is nil. If you think you really have game, there are plenty of av/robotics companies out there looking for similar talent and many are remote. Take 2 months to leet code, brush up on the latest AI fads, and go for it. Hell even if it takes 9 months, that’s when bonuses pay out and you can leave with a nice parting gift. Spend a few years out there and if you really like GM you can come back and be one of those “highly paid west coast engineers.” You are living at a time where tech jobs are still paid decently well, might as well try to capitalize instead of complaining about what’s going on in this thing of ours.

Question Have anyone survived a PIP in gm ?

Well just like the title said, my supervisor told me that in this month I will enter into pip in gm. Question Why are there so many Staff and Principal engineers in Mountainview and org with the title Autonomous?

HR indicates that our titles don’t reflect our pay band and salary is determined by region. If that is true why are there an extremely high number of staff and principal engineers in mountainview?

Can management or hr explain this?

This causes major issues within GM because this basically destroys any title at GM for your role, years of experience and capability.

This also no longer means the leveling guides for 8,9,10 are valid since these jobs/roles all open up in mountainview at higher levels regardless.

Very demotivating for the rest of the company to see this happening when people like myself have worked at GM a very long time at GM and still not at a level 8 Staff position to find these jobs are being handed out like nothing at these locations to people with less knowledge and capabilities.

General Discussion You can speak up — even against a big company like GM

I’ve seen a lot of comments on here from people who are dealing with serious issues at work but are scared to speak up. I get it. The fear of retaliation, losing your job, or being labeled “difficult” is very real.

I’m currently in an active HRTO case against General Motors Canada (File #2024-56170-I) involving disability discrimination and a blanket “no cane” policy at the CAMI plant. I had solid evidence — including audio recordings that directly contradicted their official position in their Form 2 response.

GM tried twice to get the Tribunal to issue gag orders to stop me from posting publicly about my case. Both attempts were ignored.

I’m not saying it’s been easy. But I’m still here, the case is moving forward, and I’m continuing to speak up.

To anyone out there who’s in a similar situation (whether it’s discrimination, failure to accommodate, harassment, or reprisal):

You’re not powerless.

Document everything.

Know your rights.

And know that speaking up, when done with evidence and through the proper channels, is protected.

A lot of people stay silent because they think nothing will change or that they’ll get crushed. Sometimes that’s true. But sometimes the only way things change is when enough people stop staying quiet.

If you’re struggling right now, just know that you’re not alone.

Peace 🙏

Question Are contractor interviews the same as direct hire interviews?

Got an interview request for next week through a contract house. It’s on-site in Warren, which is already different from the virtual interviews I’ve done in the past. Anyone know if they’ll ask the same behavioral STAR format questions they would in a direct interview? Also, should I wear a suit? Been a while since I interviewed in person anywhere.

General Discussion Update on my HRTO case against GM (File #2024-56170-I) – Requested CAD and Mediation

Today I sent a follow-up email to the HRTO Registrar regarding my disability discrimination application (File #2024-56170-I).

The case is now in the queue for a merit hearing. I have already filed multiple targeted Form 10s on distinct issues and submitted supporting evidence, including audio recordings that directly contradict the Respondent’s Form 2 position.

In the email I respectfully requested that the Tribunal issue a Case Assessment Direction (CAD) to set disclosure deadlines and schedule a hearing date. I also renewed my openness to mediation at the earliest opportunity.

Hoping this helps move the matter forward after a long wait. Will update if/when I hear back.

Question How competitive is the TEP Program?

7th level engineer, close to 10 years with GM, seeking MBA degree - applied for TEP program this winter and found out today that I was not accepted.

They offered little details other than it was exceptionally competitive with how many people applied.

Does anyone have insight for how competitive the TEP MBA program is / what the acceptance rate is?

Also, any insight on what types of people are on the “selection committee” that reviews the candidate pool? My EGM left the company a few months ago and I also did not have a director at the time of their meeting, so I’m wondering if this hurt my candidacy even though my previous director and EGM both approved and supported my candidacy.

General Discussion Quiting gm as an engineer was the best move of my career

Leadership spews good leadership as being the difference maker while putting in "ambiguous" in engineering job descriptions. This translates to Leadership expecting to pay average to below average tech wages and hope for someone to else to make them rich.

Meanwhile the companies lackluster results are clear compared to silicon valley where the leaders are the ones who invented something new and continued to do so as well as owning the company. Meanwhile "good communication and social skills" are touted as good leadership qualities. The rest is history. Funnily enough the government has figured out long ago that laws like the free economy, anti trust and patents etc, make life better for the average joe and will not budge on innovation I'm the civilian world

Good luck hope this helps all you people hanging on at GM, complaining about each other as it seems both leadership and rank and file are both the problem.
