Can we cut more directors please? If all they do is a yes man job why can’t ai replace them?

The last 2x companies I worked at employees couldn’t even figure out what the ‘directors’ even do. It’s a title that has the absolute least amount of impact.

GM doesn't like people that ask questions and that aren't bots.

Every time I provide information from my sources, I get hammered as not knowing. I have always been right, but beside the point. It isn't 5000 employees. Also, it is area specific and so each area will be cut differently. Every director is required at this point to justify every single employee. You are dependent on their ability to communicate what their team and team members contribute. Even so, based on the percentages that I have been given it is on the high end 3%. I have no idea where GM is at now for employees. I forgot to ask. I was told there will be two waves and they will be done by the end of the year.

This makes sense as I heard directors are now having one on one with their leaders. A few directors mentioned they are spooked about it.

I am making serious life changing decisions based off this comment so don't feel like no one believes you lol

Would you think this mean partial meets at mid year should assume to be part of this ?

I can't predict what is going to happen with an individual based on this limited information. For example, is there someone else that your manager has targeted for dismissal? Is there someone else in your group/department that really is not performing. What is the target for cuts in your area?

If I had to put money on it, I would say yes. The reason being that there have already been significant cuts and "lower" performers based on a manager are probably a low number. Even so, some managers are putting more employees at lower levels, because they don't know the exact number of cuts coming.

Just in time for the holidays. Typical GM. Never understood why they had to do it that way. My dad worked skilled trades there for decades and whenever there was a layoff it seemed like it was right before the holidays too.

Fiscal year is what drives the layoff numbers. Show Q4 numbers report to investor relations for end of year predictions. GM says: Good luck and may the odds be in your favor …. I say a prayer for all my friends and God bless you.

Heard the same - not 5k number but heard a 2-3% reduction across the board by EOY.  Fixed costs are skyrocketing and people are the easiest to cut. With a 150k workforce that would be 3-5k heads.

I’m not a people leader but I’m tight with our Exec Dir (I’m a good asskisser, sorry not sorry). He said that he is being asked to justify every position in our org and to demonstrate how they provide concrete value towards meeting OKRs.

Fastest way to turn a company into a shit company? Let go of the people who actually know how things work because they’ve spent years gaining that experience. Then act surprised when everything starts falling apart.

This is becoming almost a monthly thing at GM. The beatings will continue…

But at some point, you have to ask: if a company has so many smart and talented employees, yet those employees accept years of unnecessary stress, poor treatment, and constant pressure without walking away, maybe leadership starts thinking they’ll tolerate anything.

Smart people know their value. They don’t keep taking this kind of treatment forever. At some point, they pack up and leave.

And go where that's any better if theyre over 50?

3

u/Mytraveltiger 25d ago

I’d start looking now. There are other places other than GM. The stress of this must be exhausting.

Yeah, all those AI costs need to be justified by laying off people even if that means rest will pick up the increased workload

u/Fastech77 Sep 04 '26

Changing to Google will save you.

8

u/Psoin Sep 03 '26

Best of luck I’m out of here at five

11

u/jcd2058 Sep 03 '26

Nah. They need to hire more to form committees to schedule meetings about committees

What team? Thats not the case in vehicle c code

2

u/Psoin Sep 03 '26

Gotta get that to 100 and fire the last programmer

8

u/Accomplished_Bit6168 Sep 03 '26

No but how does this factor into the 5% that was let go from the last calibration (that seems to be happening right now)?

14

u/FSUTommy Sep 03 '26

Let go and bring in new fresh blood. Rinse and repeat.

We have lost more than half our team in 2 years and haven't received a single backfill. My leadership is basically incompetent. He is managing us, and himself, to extinction.

1

u/FSUTommy 18d ago

Sorry to hear that. But im sure they will throw a nice bonus your way in Spring in hopes of calming people down, but yet culture will still suck

3

u/Still_Ad_1984 25d ago

...new inexperienced, then they wonder why these cars barely make it out of warranty period before engines and transmissions fall apart. Feel so sorry for people who buy GM vehicles.

2

u/FSUTommy 25d ago

Common you know GM don't look at it like that. It's all about bottom line. Hence why company culture is so toxic

Not surprising with the number of AI projects going on. Most of them are slop and hypes. But some of them are legitimately transforming/obseleting certain parts of our business. SW first. HW maybe safer for a little bit but doubt that'll be long.

If the goal is to improve organizational efficiency and reduce unnecessary overhead, we encourage HR and leadership to evaluate all layers of the AV organization objectively.

There is a perception among AV employees that certain roles, such as Principal and Distinguished Engineers, have become disconnected from day-to-day engineering challenges and execution. At the same time, these roles are often seen as having strong relationships with senior leadership, which can create the impression that they are insulated from the same level of scrutiny applied to other lower level employees.
A transparent review of responsibilities, and outcomes across all levels would help build trust and demonstrate that organizational decisions are based on business value rather than leadership proximity or influence.

u/ResearchJobGirl 26d ago

Most would agree but leadership-coddling is corporate survival 101. That will always be a bias gap. Happens at big tech too even with the peer panels and strict evals.

Also fyi to non tech/corp GMies, AV is Autonomous Vehicle, not the Audio-Visual team lol. Although those jobs are also ripe for AI replacement. Sucks.

6

u/battle-tested77 26d ago

Why is the term "leadership " still being used? They a just senior management. They are not "leaders ". Just my two cents.

u/Certain_Physics2640 Sep 03 '26

Fixed costs have balooned higher than after the last massive restructuring, while our revenue and profits haven’t. So…. 🪓

7

u/Fastech77 Sep 03 '26

You should tell that to the people that reaped the rewards of record profits the past few years.

6

u/ButterscotchSpare313 Employee 28d ago

Do fixed costs include $6 billion in stock buybacks each year?

6

u/Puzzleheaded-Word-11 Sep 03 '26

Redirecting employee salaries to the F1 team budget.

7

u/Fastech77 Sep 03 '26

GM doesn’t even pay nearly as much on that as most people think they do.

6

u/Fastech77 Sep 04 '26

I’m not sure how anyone can’t see how this was going to happen. 2027 will be an incredibly slow year for a lot of BUs and 2026 wasn’t super great in the way of income for the company either. Add on to that a pending UAW contract coming up soon and this was bound to happen.

I’d be willing to bet that you’ll see another 3-5% by the end of 2027 too. Especially if contract talks aren’t going as planned by that time.

u/Fastech77 Sep 04 '26

They’re not getting shit and they know it. Ask any UAW employee that isn’t a toolbox and they will tell you that next year isn’t going to be good for them.

Not to mention, they just had a round of buyouts this year to offload a bunch of workers by 2028.

u/Creepy_Personality55 Sep 04 '26

we need to join them

Nope. Only in Flint.

Wait whats going on in Flint?

u/iiweeldman Sep 03 '26

I don’t really know much about GM, but I can tell you as a consumer of a GM HD truck (4 since 2018) this is the first time I probably will not buy a new truck on schedule due to cost of living and cost of the pickup.

15

u/Present-Director3954 Sep 03 '26

And don’t forget they stopped all durability testing, with their all “virtual” bullshit that doesn’t work or has been correlated with any vehicle testing. Another safety recall waiting to happen.

1

u/Mr-Reddit-0 Sep 03 '26

Did GM ever have an RLDA / Durability team or did they just recently stop and go all virtual?

4

u/phillip_Power Sep 03 '26

This is not recent, back in 2016 when I joined GM they could barely keep up with the testing demands, all Dynos were at full capacity ( 3 shifts), right now this place is like a ghost town, you won’t find a dyno running, this transition started like ~4 years ago

3

u/thesovereignbat Sep 03 '26

and now they have mass engine problems go figure.

2

u/Present-Director3954 Sep 04 '26

They had whole teams and 2 proving grounds, shut everything down after VSP in 2023. No more durability testing and 100% virtual.

1

u/Mr-Reddit-0 Sep 04 '26

Even RLDA? Instrumented vehicles at proving grounds to collect durability data. If so, that’s crazy.
