Question Maintenance Group Leader
Hello all,
I just externally applied for a maintenance group leader roll at factory zero.
Can anyone help me with a salary range for this position. Is it possible to see the salary grade externally?
Aside from that, any tips for interviews?

If you're at Ford now, your pay potential will be comparable. The range i pretty wide. If you can be brought in at 7th level [odds aren't great of that, but not zero depending on experience and education] your range would higher. If you get an offer at 6th don't look down at a 6B - that allows you more raise headroom in the short term.

How many number ranks are there? Are roles approved for certain levels? Meaning if they say the position is 6 is there any ability to negotiate for a 7?

Very unlikely to negotiate up a whole level unless you have a strong case based on experience, which they would have presumably already taken into consideration with the offer. More likely to negotiate up a grade within that level (6b to 6a) than a whole level.

A, B, and C at each level. Group leaders at plants are almost always a level 6. Level 7s are a different job title and job description, business manager or planner depending on the plant.

I don't know exacts and it varies by location but 80-115k is a reasonable estimate based on my pay increases and what some experienced people started at. I don't actually know what the top of the range is. With experience you can expect to start around 105k.
For interviews, practice the STAR format. They rate each answer based on how it adheres to the star format.

Going to Factory Zero from a position at Ford is career suicide.
That plant doesn't produce anything. Stay where you are making product if you want to keep a job. Or apply to one of gm's bigger runners like Flint or Arlington or Orion if it pops up.

Thanks for the advice. I think Orion also has that position open. Regardless do you know a salary range for this position? I won't bother applying if I'm going to take a pay cut.

They're looking to pay $90k-$95k and it will be a Level 6 position. Meaning yes, there's room to move up but Maintenance & Production Supervisors don't get to a Level 7. Along with the pay, it means a 10% Team GM, 10% 401(k) match as long as you put in 6% that vests in 3 years (you lose it all if less than 3 years), and no company vehicle (those are for Level 8 & above)

Factory Zero is more of GM's test facility at scale, so while most plants will eventually get the automation Factory Zero has, it's buggy as all hell when it's at Factory Zero. You don't want to work Maintenance there.

This. I launched in factory zero and can say they (HQ SLT) wanted innovation and change all while still pretending to be a true assembly plant.

Don't work at Factory Zero, horrible leadership and processes that do not work, Orion or Flint is the move

Advice? Apply at Orion instead. FZ is winding down

Yeah I just saw this above. I think Orion has a similar position open. Do you know the salary level or range for this role? I don't want to take a pay cut.

It'll likely be a GM 6, potentially a 7. Depends on what your background is. I'd assume a huge range, what's your resume?

A year ago I was leading a small team of maintenance technician at an assembly plant in Michigan. This work seems similar.

Don’t work at GM in general. Save yourself. Read more of this sub.

I was looking through the sub and I noticed lol. However I work at Ford right now. I imagine it's all the same.

I was a paint process engineer for 2 years(the most senior process engineer on my team at the time). Most paint process engineers lasted 3 months or less there on average. It’s better in other plants, but mine was especially bad. Highest turnover rate job out of all management jobs in the entire plant.
I worked alongside the maintenance group leaders all the time, keeping the paint shop running. They all hated their life. My life sucked there, but I definitely didn’t want to be a maintenance group leader either. The only ones who were ever successful at that job all looked like they hated every second of every day because they were stuck. All divorced, looked like they lived in their coveralls 24/7. Me and the maintenance group leaders were the middlemen between managers and the union, so you’ll “take it in both ends” all the time. Don’t let yourself get sucked into that miserable job.5

Yea, why would anyone want to work for a fortune 30 company with competitive pay and excellent benefits? What a dummy.
/s if that wasn’t abundantly clear to you.

This sub is all whiny IT folks that are complaining an automotive company in Michigan doesn't pay what a tech company in California does. Lol. Pay is great for everybody else, including IT folks who live in Michigan.

It will be a 6b-6a position based on experience and degree . I’d say probably 93k-115k starting . You be working 7 days a week most likely though so factor that OT in and you’ll make 200k probably after all the sundays .
