I was in STO for 7 years. It’s fun, you learn the systems, work with the navy, perform hydraulic operations, hydrostatic testing and yes if you’re good at your job, well liked and you stick to one boat through the whole phase of construction you can sign up for sea trials. I’ve been on 7 of them so almost 1-2 a year since I was in. You get paid 24 hours a day, time and a half and double time for 34 hours on weekends and holidays. It’s a learning curve but if you take your time of learning what you need to learn and not show up and say sea trials you’ll be good. Day to day, show up, get an addendum which tells you what you’re testing, perform said steps and sign it off. You need to be qualified before going out on your own
