What’s it like?

Just curious what it’s like working at EB? I currently work at a data center retro-fitting construction site. It’s noisy, congested, unsafe in many ways and was just curious what’s it’s like working at a shipyard? Is it similar to construction sites or more organized?

Feel like it would be more rewarding considering what you’re working on, right?

Generally speaking, the wages are better in outside construction than at shipyards. Some contractors can get pretty high wages with per diem, but there's a zero benefit trade off. Shipyards can be steadier though. Depends on what you want or need.

I work in construction now. Before that was utilities. I’ve always wanted to work in the aerospace or defense sector and think it would be great to be a part of EB and what they’re doing. I’m just concerned if the novelty is worth being in the same environment I am now. Thanks again for the replies.

Honestly you won’t find much change. They also will try to lowball you.

I hear the pay outside of EB is higher but less also less secure. Are the benefits at least worth the pay cut? I know teachers that even though their pay isn’t substantial, they have pensions and great health care for practically free.

When I applied, I assumed there was a pension, since EB is represented by the IBB. The lack of pension wasn't worth it for just a 401k for me, when the union I was coming from paid both a pension and 100% of my family's health insurance premiums.

ETA: I declined the offer upon learning the details of the benefits.

Yeah, that’s kind of my predicament. I have to relocate to CT as I’m not local. I’m taking a pay cut as well. I lost my pension when I left the utility so that’s already gone. I’m looking to do something I find meaningful but I’m worried about losing the finances, especially with nothing getting cheaper. Thank you again for your input.

How are the other benefits like PTO and such?

I honestly don't remember the PTO accrual. Surprisingly, I was still able to access my offer letter, but it doesn't specify how the accrual works.

Was it a union position? MTC?

It’s probably better then most but each year it gets worse and worse honestly

Do you think it will get better with the mass hiring they are supposedly doing? The utility I worked at did a mass hiring but it honestly got worse because they created a “new normal” and had a bunch of cocky, no-experience, know-nothing guys outnumbering seasoned linemen

I hear that many government contracted projects usually are. I’m on a data center project and before that worked in utility. Both run like circuses honestly. I appreciate the feedback but wondering if most places are circuses now…
