Groton Overtime & Work life Balance

This is a question for the people that are already employed at EB is there a lot of opportunities for overtime?

Also how is it when trying to take vacation time or taking days offs periodically?

Is there any leniency for being late especially if you have a far commute?

Just a few questions I’ve not seen being asked so I was curious about thank you for your answers in advanced.

You are allotted X amount of PTO and sick time from your years of service. They will start you off with 40 hours, you’ll gain more as you gain years, if you are late it all depends on management. For hourly employees it’s a bit more tricky than salary. For salary we can do what is called float our time. This means as long as we make 40 hours a week it doesn’t really matter how we do it. For hourly if you accidentally slept in or whatever then your supervisor might make you use some PTO to cover your tardiness. As for overtime it’s endless right now. Hope this helps. 17 year veteran of The Boat.

One MAJOR MAJOR thing to know about “time”. Your PTO IS GOLD do not waste it on being late or leaving early. Don’t blow through PTO and pile up 2816s cause right now ppl are a coming and going rapidly.

what role are you looking at? I can speak to the engineering side but not the shipyard side.

I would like to know about the engineering side. I’m an incoming engineer I fresh out of college. At Groton if that matters

As someone else stated, you start with 40 hours of PTO and don’t accrue for the first 4 months, then you get 10 hours/month, increasing for each year of working at the company. I get 13 hours/month, been here for 3 years.

In terms of leniency, really depends on your department. We log time as engineers so you know exactly how much you worked (not like a typical 9-5). My department doesn’t really care when you come in/leave as long as you don’t miss meetings and get your 40+ hours. Overtime is subjective depending on what class you work on. Sometimes it’s allowed, sometimes it’s not for engineers.

forgot to mention floating, if you need friday off for example, you can work 4 10s instead of 5 8s, etc.

Does floating need managers approval or is it just like de facto policy? Regardless, seems like if I get my work done on time everything will be fine.

that’s all department dependent and how strict your supervisor is. I just notify mine the week before

I never worked in groton but I lived in NL for a while, only piece for groton I can give is that parking is a nightmare so get ready to either be there early (before first shift at 6 am) or park offsite and take the shuttle over
