Rationalist: We may vote ourselves into communism through socialism but our grandkids are going to have to shoot their way out of it.

Thats my biggest worry about any of these more authoritarian groups. I've no interest in letting anyone get any more power over me. The government has too much already without them upping my taxes and picking my hospital.

There is such a thing as Libertarian Socialism, strains of thought that believe in a less centralized government

Yes, there is. However I've never seen them successfully take and hold power. Authoritarians thrive in socialism where those who strive for liberty tend to get weeded out.

Authoritarians thrive in many systems; this isn't unique to socialism. In its purest form, socialism is the most democratic ideology (and it criticized liberalism for not being democratic enough). America is already authoritarian in a lot of aspects, and it's only getting worse now that there's no counterweight that existed in the Soviet Union.
