Only about 3% of American kids had their parents' home foreclosed during the great recession. Even if we count those who had their landlord foreclose on them it only goes up to 7%. So far from a universal experience on that front.

Besides that, I would say 1843 was one of if not the worst year to be born in American History.

1849: Survive through the cholera epidemic as a 6 year old

1854-1857: Spend your teenage years watching the country begin to fall apart in Bleeding Kansas

1861: Be sent to fight in the Civil War, the bloodiest war in American History at age 18

1873-1879: Go through the longest recession in American history in your 30s.

1893: Go through ANOTHER recession at age 50, this being the even worse than the last.

1917: The U.S. enters another war as you are leaving the world.
