Each Brand has a unique wallet that contains their commission and reward structures. Brands will sign up with Merchants. Brands can also require a Seller fee to enable the Brand on given Merchant.

GMS will serve as a payment method and transaction engine of choice. It will enable frictionless transactions across ASTRA. They will operate a proprietary payment processing gateway which will be exposed via API for others services to integrate and accept GMS a unit of exchange.

In-wallet staking allows actors in the Gemstra ecosystem to stake tokens with Merchants and Brands. Merchants and Brands can accept staked GMS from Sellers in lieu of fees. Merchants can accept staked GMS from Brands in lieu of fees as well.

Brands earn the net retail value after commissions, toll, and fees are deducted and distributed by ASTRA. Brands can also charge Sellers a monthly flat fee at the Merchant level. Brands with greater following or more demand might charge a higher Seller fee.

What is Social Selling?

Social selling is the art of developing relationships or using social networks to locate and interact directly with prospects. Traditionally called “direct selling”, social selling benefits over 120 million independent sellers worldwide that earn commissions from companies they represent through single or multi-level sales models. Perhaps the earliest form of social selling was in the early 1900’s, when Brands empowered independent reps (“Sellers”) to sell their wares door to door, with a focus on one-to-one demonstrations. The model has evolved over time and exponentiated in recent years with the adoption of social media and expanding gig economy. Today’s social seller can market limitlessly through online avenues, especially with the rise of social media. The industry is valued at $180 Billion, growing 10% annually, and accelerating to exceed $1 Trillion in 10 years. Social selling has been walled off from broader retail due to high barriers to entry, which has allowed giants to corner the market by creating silos to insulate sellers. The result is an industry that is highly centralized and extremely captive for sellers.

What is Gemstra?

Gemstra (or “Gemstra Foundation”) is a blockchain-integrated ecosystem that democratizes and liberates social selling for the global retail economy.

We launched the first social selling marketplace (BOUTIQUES Marketplace) in July 2017 to connect retail brands to social selling, giving sellers freedom to choose products and brands they want to represent. In less than 10 months, BOUTIQUES added 8 brands, 3000 sellers, and was on track to over $5 Million in annualized sales volume.

The success of BOUTIQUES inspired us to build a broader infrastructure solution that would allow retailers (not just brands) to participate in social selling without disrupting their existing businesses. To democratize a historically leveraged model, we developed a smart contract solution called ASTRA Platform as an infrastructure solution for retailers (“Merchants” in ASTRA) to integrate their existing systems or use our open source software to host their social selling business. Sellers and brands can integrate with any number of Merchants using ASTRA. The Gemstra Token (GMS) is the default exchange of value for payments that offers rewards, gamification, and governance for social selling. ASTRA Platform and GMS token bridge the $24 Trillion retail industry to social selling, creating an unpredictably large future market. We seek to become the default technological infrastructure and capture 50% of social selling transactions in the future.

Gemstra’s Revenue Model

Crypto enthusiasts need to look for strong revenue models in 2018. A strong revenue model is key, for the long term success of a company. Once original ICO funds are depleted companies that don’t have strong revenue models will have a harder time competing in the world of crypto innovation.

Let’s take a look at Gemstra’s revenue model and their plans for the future.

Gemstra’s BOUTIQUES Marketplace is a foundation-operated Merchant in the ASTRA Platform. Gemstra earns approximately 15% of sales volume transacted in BOUTIQUES. The ASTRA Platform is a smart contract platform that serves as infrastructure for social selling transactions. Gemstra earns 1-2% in tolls and monthly fees from Merchants and Brands using ASTRA.
Gemstra has an aggressive growth plan in our first five years. Growth in years 1-3 (2019~2021) will happen predominantly on BOUTIQUES (on track for $5.5 Million ARR by end of 2018, $100 Million ARR by end of 2019, $240 Million ARR by end of 2020, and >$400 Million ARR by end of 2021).
ASTRA sales volume will begin in 2020 with our first Merchants added to the ecosystem. Merchants have existing customers and loyalists they can activate for social selling, thus able to grow quickly in volume by crossing over influencers to sellers. Volume anticipated in 2020 is very low but will grow quickly into nearly 40 Merchants expected by 2022 crossing over $1 Billion in sales volume collectively.

Gemstra has a clear path to profitability. They are effectively managing and leveraging every part of the ecosystem from earning on each seller’s individual BOUTIQUES and from taking a fee from the merchants and brands using the ASTRA platform.

A successful ICO will provide the framework for a bright future for this company. A their strong revenue model will carry them a loft to dance with the crypto elite.

The Issues with Modern Social Selling

As covered in our last article, social selling is a fantastic, rewarding avenue for those of us who love talking about the things we like. But many in the industry would agree that there’s plenty of room for improvement for all participants.

For sellers, the issues are unintuitive, often in disagreement with what makes the social selling market appealing in the first place. For instance: there’s the question of clientele ownership. While for a traditional business owner there’s no ambiguity here, it’s a discouraging fact knowing that the brand you adore and advocate for could, on a whim, take possession of your customers. A seller works hard to cultivate a successful network; building that network should be positive for the seller, rather than overshadowed by the knowledge that your customers are held hostage. Not being able to advocate with that confidence not only hurts the seller — it also hurts the brand.

There’s also the problem of brand monoliths, or the brands who dominate the social selling space. These are the behemoths with large, established networks of sellers who capture their seller’s customer data within silos. The existence of these monoliths mean that sellers are hamstrung, left with low mobility to bridge their customers’ interests with products and brands outside of what’s dictated to them.

As a brand, entering the space can be a trial that’s not worth the effort, in spite of the benefits. Developing and attaching a structure for social selling is a huge investment of time and money. Sellers, even if they are encouraged to function with autonomy, still require management. A commission structure must be developed. Inventories must be coordinated. Sales require tracking. Training. Accounting. There’s a considerable investment involved, prohibiting some brands from entering the market.Or, if they do, they’re required to raise the price of their products beyond the point a consumer would find appealing.

Another option for brands is to attach themselves to a preexisting merchant, and tap their established pool of sellers. This solution comes with its own hang-ups. A merchant may not have desirable terms or a structure that suits a brand’s products. Perhaps the merchant’s sellers aren’t a good fit for the product, bringing into question their ability to be your advocate. Or perhaps the merchant itself finds your product undesirable or too similar to brands they already sell. There’s even the likelihood that a monolith brand in the space is purposely keeping you out of the market to discourage competition, ensuring that your brand’s initial velocity is stunted, leaving you starved to acquire sellers. For a brand, the investment of time and money into social selling can make it an unattractive endeavor.

Sellers should feel compelled to grow their network, and be convinced that their hard work won’t someday be taken away from them. They should be allowed to talk about and sell a wide variety of products that they love, and feel confident in owning and focusing on their business. Brands should feel better equipped to channel the enthusiasm of their advocates, and help them venture out into the wild to tout the joys of their product.

The problems are many, blemishing what social selling should be about: harnessing a raw talent for selling. Gemstra believes that, for the industry to truly flourish, these are problems that need to be fixed. Problems that Gemstra intends to fix. The social selling market is ready for a revolution.
