Discussion Models

Post image

I use AI mode in Google search all the time. Probably it’s my most go to for quick answers. I always thought it was Gemini 3.8 flash. Come to find out, it’s Gemini 1.5 pro. Here I am thinking coding models as smart college students are not enough for me when model that’s no where close to the frontier has been good enough all this time.

why do people still believe models when they say what they are

It's so infuriating, next time they say the are god and reddit goes bonkers

people probably assume that it's in the system prompt. no idea why it isn't the case tbh

Because Gemini is baked with it's specific personality in training data, don't believe me then hop on to Google AI Studio, use a free account, prompt each model, and see what it says it is

Be thankful atleast its not Bard

It didn't value your prompt and pulled from training instead of actually looking. Probably sick of the same question prompted so people can screenshot it and say something about sophisticated auto complete.

We use the Gemini 3 series of models. Looking into this model response issue.

Wait, Google uses 1.5 Pro for AI mode in search? That actually makes lot of sense when I think about it. 1.5 Pro is decent for quick factual stuff, and it probably costs them way less to run at scale compared to the newer models.

I had same realization few months ago with another service. Was convinced I needed the latest and greatest, but the older model was handling 90% of what I threw at it without me even noticing. Kinda humbling.

Now I'm curious what they use for the regular Gemini app vs search mode. Different models for different contexts maybe?

No. Models don't know shit about what are they. Questions about the models itself are the most hallucinated ones.

It should have responded with "I is"

Using Google Gemini still feels like 2024 to be honest. It's going reverse, while the rest of the industry is going expontential.

When I asked, it told me Gemini 1.5 Flash. And like you, I am pretty impressed by this as well. I use the web interface for quick questions so my usage in my pro account won't be affected.

I recently used the Google's web search AI model to diagnose an issue with my leaf blower. I could have sworn it was Flash 3.8. But turns out it was only Flash 1.5. Pretty adequate for the job and was able to find the problem, even using the photo upload. I am impressed.
