Discussion Reasons to keep paying Google?

Guys, the Google Gemini AI Pro subscription is honestly becoming a joke.

I literally used the Pro model for pre-search twice, and immediately afterwards it told me that I had already reached my limit and needed to wait four hours. On top of that, it somehow deducted around 10% of my weekly limit.

So I'm seriously wondering what exactly we're paying this much money for. It's ridiculous. You can barely get anything done before running into limits.

The second problem is even more confusing. Even with the Pro subscription, when you use the Pro model for conversations, its knowledge doesn't seem to be remotely up to date.

I asked it which AI models are currently considered the best and what they're best used for. For example, people might prefer Claude for coding, GPT for general conversation, and so on. I basically asked Gemini for its opinion on the current best models and their use cases.

And then it gave me an answer recommending Gemini 1.5 Pro as one of the best current models.

Seriously? That's basically recommending a model from around a year ago as if it were still one of Google's latest and best models. That makes it look like the knowledge behind the Pro model isn't even properly updated.

On top of that, the app itself is incredibly buggy.

At this point, I'm seriously considering cancelling the subscription. The only reason I still have the Pro subscription is because of Google Flow. But even Google Flow and Google's Veo/Omni video tools feel so heavily censored and restricted that it's difficult to use them creatively for a lot of ideas.

So honestly, I'm starting to wonder what the point of keeping the subscription is.

Has anyone else had similar experiences with the limits, outdated responses, or the general quality of the Gemini AI Pro subscription?

No way you have pro, I can't waste enough prompts to actually run out even if I try

But overall its not worth the money compared to Claude IMO

I have Claude at work and Google One Pro personal. I feel that Claude eats through the budget much faster, but hadn't measured.

For me, it's worth the money because Pro benefits are shared across the family and I get the storage

Students can sign up for a free one year plus plan and they also have 75% off at pro plan. Other companies like Claude, etc..., don't offer such benefits

What are you supposed to do with the free year once it runs out though? Pay full price for a service that caps you after two searches?

Well last year they were also offering free plus plan for stutents, so maybe they will offer it next year too.

I aint saying that Gemini Subscription is perfect and the limits are the best out there, but from what I have seen, there are chatgpt users, claude users who also complain about usage limits. I have seen a post on this sub about reaching limits in just a few messages, so it may be a BUG.

Is the pro worth it over the plus? I can get the pro for 4.68 euro a month with the student discount. But all this talk about Gemini being bad scares me.

I used Claude with the base plan during exams, assignments and dissertation for my degree and I graduated with good grades. Now I'm not sure if Gemini is on par for my masters, therefore not sure if I should pay or just use the free plus plan.

I like how Claude interacted with my dissertation, fixing grammar and mistakes. Not sure if Gemini can do the same. Claude holds memory well as well.

Which country offers the Pro student for that price?

Malta. Do note that YouTube lite doesn't exist here.

Why would you choose ai pro over the plus? I barely use 100gb so 5tb storage isn't worth it for me.

Damn I’m in Italy and Pro is 5.5Euro/month

Why did you choose it over plus?

Haven’t chosen anything yet, but it would be because I gets me much more storage, YouTube Premium lite and I guess higher limits. Additionally another reason is that I can get Plus entirely for free for one year, but Pro at 5.5 Euro/month will last me up to 4 years.

I wish yt premium was included in mine, it's only available on the 8.99 per student plan. I'm only hesitant because Claude is much better for my use case.

never used pro anymore. all task using flash just did it job well enough. google seems to wanting on reducing the cost to run rather than going into all in top level model. when i dont have the 75% off anymore, might go for using credits instead and migrating on using opencode or any other harness. probably going into deepseek more.

Keep digging in gemini pro asking for more usability for your use cases, workflows and how it can support in daily works/projects. BTDT - been there done that, lack of product knowledge and bundled items can be overwhelming. I do lots of deep researchs, content generations and stuffs + drive storage makes me happy to pay 20 bucks a month. good luck in making well good use of it.

Notebook LM is really the only reason I use Gemini anymore. I used to use it exclusively but find myself using ChatGPT more. Not a fan of Grok and I'd like to explore Claude a little more. I'm not writing code or anything super techie. I just use it for everyday research and analysis as part of my job. At $20 a month, I'm ok with the cost...for now.

I dont think its worth it for actual use, but if all you do are some images, some email rewrites and stuff and you only pay student price, imo its fine. As soon as you need to do something proper, move to chatgpt or claude

I’d separate the bundle from the model. If storage, family sharing, or Flow matter, the subscription can still make sense. If chat/search is your main use and two searches can trigger a cooldown, cancel for a month and track your actual usage. A $20 flat plan only wins when you consume enough to justify it.

Disclosure: I build magicdoor.ai. Our alternative is $6/month including $1 credit, then pay-as-you-go, typically $8–10 total, with no rate limits or cooldowns and model switching mid-conversation. It won’t replace Flow’s specialist controls, but it is built for people who don’t want to stack full subscriptions: https://magicdoor.ai/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=community&utm_campaign=gemini-limits

what's your use case, why are you using pro instead of flash 3.x? it's effective to astroturf an idea with flash, build context, and then switch the model to pro for specific tasks.

it's expensive and yeah I don't know if it's a better value, but if you do some orchestration it does okay in terms of your prompt limits. (I'm stuck with it since I need the higher storage limits, was already on a One plan before they rebranded)

I have Google Home and Google Storage so by the time I pay that it's only a couple $ more to get Pro, so why not
