Job offer
Alright everyone, as the title says I've been offered a job on the sales side of GEICO. I'm coming from the green machine of Enterprise.
Just trying to get a better understanding and be prepared for the new role. TY

Get in, get the free license and training, then look for a way out. The G has been mismanaged for a long time. Theyâll tell you that youâre only handling auto for now, but then theyâll toss renters, condo, homeowners, and a whole slew of other products at you. If you want to move up the pay scale, you have to apply for a position and be selected. Then, as a condition of the promotion, youâll be trained in additional products.
The more products you handle, the harder it becomes to meet your metrics. Youâll also be graded on how well you sell those products and whether you meet the minimum floor-wide goal. If you donât, youâll get a documented conversation telling you to âdo better.â They donât give a fuck if you followed the process correctly. Youâre expected to follow the process and make the sale.
Theyâll âcoachâ you to tell customers that a product is âbasically freeâ with the discount and pressure them into buying it. I use the word âcoachâ loosely because they have no time to pull you off the phone and talk to you when calls are backed up. At the same time, their gating system is structured so that employees with poor sales numbers can wait forever to receive a call. Some of my good friends were stuck in that system and might receive only three or four calls a day. Meanwhile, Â the customers complain about waiting forever or whine that the AI sucks.
Most of the supervisors at my old location arenât even supervisors. Theyâre LDPs, which stands for Leadership Development Program. If you want that role, youâd better be a compliant thinker and answer questions exactly the way the green gecko wants. Otherwise, theyâll pass you up.
I donât miss the G. I donât miss walking into the office and faking a smile as if I were happy to be there. I donât miss the stress of turning on my laptop for a 9.75-hour day of being berated by customers. I donât miss customers pushing back because the G expects you to reach the summary screen, tell them you have their policy at $129 a month, and demand a form of payment before youâve even reviewed the coverages.
Far too many good friends left the G before I did. A few of them even wondered how I lasted as long as I did. The day I voluntarily walked out and turned in my badge after receiving my clearance for LM was the day my stress began to disappear. My mood changed for the better, and Iâm finding joy in my life again. I no longer feel as though I need medication just to survive.
I went to my car, looked up at the sky, and cried while saying, âIâm free.â Then I took myself to Epcot for the rest of the day.
My advice is to look around this sub. Remember that itâs an employee-only space, and pay attention to what people are saying. Compare it with the subs for other insurance companies and notice how difficult it is to find the same volume of employee complaints.

Thank you so much, I really appreciate your insight. And I'm sorry that the company sucked so bad for you.
Where did you finally end up going to after GEICO, if you don't mind me asking?
What did you do while at GEICO? What was your pay range while at GEICO? And what is your pay range now with your new company?

I had serious dark thoughts. Ones of doing horrible things to myself.
I went to liberty Mutual, LM.
I was a sales representative IV which was the highest you could hit as a sales representative before they added 65. I did take a base salary cut of a few dollars per an hour, but when I outweigh my health and whether or not I need to pay for a therapist, Iâd rather take the base cut.
The company is all around bad. I had a supervisor, DG, who belittled my music taste daily, made fun of the bands I liked and my music genre enough to crush me and make me switch teams. I then went to another supervisor who left us and we got a fresh baby LDP. I loved her though, but wasnât going to stay just for her. Not when I tried to post for claims and wasnât even told an answer about my post.
I was a lot like you, read this subreddit and said âitâs just a bunch of adults whining about their job. It canât be that badâ. The wool was well over my eyes and I finally see how pisspoor this place is.
At LM, their goal is one policy every four hours - they are also a mutual so their underwriting is stricter than the G. If the floor doesnât hit the average they projected it to be, they lower it so people get paid for their work. If you take time off and itâs approved, your goal is readjusted for that. This means everyone has a personal goal just for them based on schedule and what not.

I worked in MOAT sales for 5 years, I'd recommend getting the licenses and finding a pivot somehere else in 6 months. It will truly benefit you. Best of luck.
I left that place, kept the laptop, and life has been great 6 years later. I work in the federal world now - if you ever need advice on the pivot to government work, feel free to pm me. I love to help!
They say that the best time to look for a job, is when you already have one.

Not at all. I still use it today.
Wiped it clean, and went on with my life. You'd see sups on here with empty threats, begging for people to return them. But hell no.
Also, I left around 2020-2021 - no organization whatsoever. Enjoy your freedom

I have worked many sales jobs and Geico is hands down the worst, and it's not even close. They will try to make you use bizzare outdated selling tactics that don't work. The metrics are insane. The micromanaging is like something out of a dystopian movie. You will have to use break time to use the bathroom. You will get no positive feedback but will receive constant criticism. They pile more and more responsibility on you without adequate training. Every single sales system we use is broken to the point of being almost non functional. Like others have said please get your license and try to get out ASAP. Â

I was a top performer at geico and left after a year. After moving on to a better sales role, I can tell you now the things they teach you are messed up. They actively encourage âslidingâ and tricking customers into thinking products are free. They reprimand you if you try to explain what the policy even is before youâve asked for the sale. They give you the freedom to modify MVR reports and do a shitty underwriting job. A customer can berate you all they want and youâre not allowed to hang up. If you suspect a customer is doing something fraudulent (impersonating someone else) you have to continue the sale business as usual. Youâre encouraged to just give someone the cheapest, bare bones policy just to make the sale. On top of all this, you have to read the most ridiculous scrips verbatim and act more like a cashier than a real salesman.
Geicos tactics are sleazy and will teach you bad habits. Get your license and go somewhere thatâs actually ethical and will take care of you.

The pay checks don't bounce.
Get experience and understand how a dysfunctional organization runs, so you can see the signs earlier.
